I believe @Scepticalscribe posted this awhile ago.

Man is it beautiful! Listened to it yesterday while my son took his turn driving us to the beach.
I'm always grateful to be introduced to classical music, I find it a bit tricky to get into. I have to be in the right mood for it, as I am far too plebeian. But I do appreciate it. I'll check this out.

And now, for a piece - well, two pieces - of classical music that I think superlative (and am currently listening to):

Sergei Rachmaninov, Piano Concerto No 2 in C Minor, Op 18:

1st Movement (Moderato), - which I think is absolutely brilliant,

and,

2nd Movement (Adagio, Sostenuto), which is haunting, magnificent and unforgettable.

(The third movement is also excellent, but the first two are simply superb).

Anyway, my father loved this piece of music, and played it endlessly. Indeed, after his death, I recall coming across at least two or three different cassette tapes (featuring two or three different recordings) with "Rach 2" scrawled on them in his distinctive spiky hand.

@rm5, you might like these two superb pieces, - the last three minutes of the 2nd Movement Adagio are exceptionally powerfully moving - and may I also recommend them to @pachyderm.

And, now for yet another piece of classical music, one of my own perennial personal favourites:

W. A. Mozart - Piano Concerto No 20 in D Minor, K. 466: Romance.

Stunning, superb, sublime, sheer magnificence and magic represented in music.

@rm5 - if you haven't listened to this, do yourself a favour; it is wonderful.

Yeah 20 is a doozy, I was in a pretty bad accident with that on and 20yrs later every time I get to that point in the recording my brain still makes my spine tingle uncomfortably. Weird. Still worth it tho.

If you have a few hours to kill, I'll add a rec for my favorite piece of music of all time, Ravels entire Daphnis et Chloe suite. I'm not even sure how I'd describe it, it's such a visual piece of music, it's like an ancient science fiction fantasy imagined by greek gods and godesses, translated trough a french impressionist painter and relayed in the form of some eternal ballet. If you like dynamics, hang on to your hat bc it is a wild ride. Needs to be listened to loud.

But, there's so much going on in it, I've never heard a performance of it that does everything well. If they're good with the delicate interleaving melodies coming out of the low swampy parts they usually fumble the crescendos when the worlds are colliding, etc...

This will do though:

Keith Jarrett - "Metamorphosis" from In the Light. All contemporary classical compositions, well worth a listen!! Man, those harmonies are crazy!
