Still one of my favorite pieces! I love how intentionally and carefully he layers stuff. Plus I just love the idea of mashing up hundreds, if not thousands, of songs. But I may be in the minority of loving this, because I love weird stuff like this in general.

Interesting, I didn't know that.
Yeah!! Often, in a baroque ensemble audition, you’ll indicate whether A4 is 440Hz (normal), or 415Hz (one semitone down, what would normally be considered A flat 4). Not many musicians know that, oddly enough, but I like to explain it to them!

You can prove it by finding a score for this piece (or really anything from that time period) on IMSLP or somewhere else (they just have them for free which is cool). Assuming the score is written at A4=440Hz (some are indeed transposed in the “correct” key), try to play or sing along with any of the parts. You’ll probably hear that there’s a semitone’s difference.

@VisceralRealist Dunno if you're still on your baroque kick, but you should definitely check out Bach's violin concertos. The one in A minor I particularly like (well, in our current tuning system, it's in A flat minor--A4 has shifted over the past 400 years).

I'm sure I have listened to them before, but not in a while. I have a complete recording of Bach's orchestral music (an 8 CD set) with Trevor Pinnock and The English Concert. Playing on period instruments, so using baroque tuning.

Glad to know you also have a music collection! In my opinion, it's totally worth the time and money. Less I can use streaming, the better (of course, streaming is sometimes the only way to get stuff). Of course, my Spotify library is quite extensive, too. But if I can have something as a file - or better, physically - I honestly enjoy it more, knowing I'm not bound to a corporation.

I was also extremely fortunate that one of my professors gave me an entire folder of jazz stuff, which, more than a year later, I'm still going through!

Some Scandinavian folk music! Been awhile since I've listened to any of that (not because I've lost interest, just because recently people have shared so many other genres and songs that I haven't had time to circle back). I love it! Would highly recommend checking out if you want something new to listen to!

One music channel I love following is Dead Wax. Today they did an hour interview with Anthony Marinelli, who programmed the drums (LynnDrum machine) and the synths for all the parts on Michael Jackson's Thriller. (all the parts were played, one at a time, by Greg Phillinganes, over the course of two days). Fascinating discussion covering how Thriller was made, how technology threatens musicians and then is adopted, really fascinating if you're into that kind of stuff:

I do think, once the news is done tonight, I need to play Thriller and slap on a set of headphones.

"Cannonball Takes Charge" - great album with the Kind of Blue band, minus John Coltrane and Miles Davis. Also released in 1959.

Great tune!

You're completely ignoring The Ducks? Haven't seen you in the NCAA thread... you okay?
I'm okay...had a major life upheaval over here (my daughter has been diagnosed with leukemia) so I've been busy helping her, but I've not ignored my NUMBER ONE DUCKS! Gotta revel in that while we have it; it's a great day to be a Duck!

I appreciate you checking on me, Pachy. :)
