Well, you drew my attention to this lovely CD - Daniel Hope - Air A Baroque Journey recorded by Deutsche Grammophon shortly after Christmas, and - on your recommendation, I ordered it, expecting (or hoping) to receive it by January 5, as Amazon had suggested might be the case in their email.

In any case, it arrived today. Nevertheless, it should come as no surprise to you what I shall be listening to this evening.

Some Brazilian pop to chase away the increasingly cold winter blues this weekend. Stuff I got from a playlist Apple Music offered me. They are starting to know me pretty well, more and more of their offerings "For You" are hitting the mark and yet i have pretty electic taste in tunes. Kudos to them!

Nothing like a bit of sunshine music in the depths of winter.

Agreed, music such as Azymuth, Manu Chao, and the Buena Vista Social Club all offer the possibility of a ray of musical sunshine at that time of year.

Oh what a great idea, Buena Vista Social Club, I'm going to watch the movie again, THANK YOU. I just read forecast for weather is for 5ºF here on Monday morning, so a little side trip to Cuba via my laptop sounds right to me. :)

On the topic of this sort of music, I must say that I am also rather partial to Os Mutantes - a sort of psychedelic rock fusion Brazilain group from the 60s. Lovely stuff, too, if you want a bit of sunshine. (And they were politically progressive, too, always something of a plus in my book).

Kite - Victorious

I have no idea how I missed these guys, they've released 6 EP's so far and are among the absolute best synth-pop I've heard in a long time! A nice range from Vince Clarke-ish pop over OMD to more epic electronica...

A few soundtracks rooted in European nostalgia, owing nothing whatsoever to Our Cousins Across The Atlantic. And yes, if I like a soundtrack, I will not just seek it out, but will go to great lengths to try to track it down, if it is not widely available, or commercially successful.

Anyway, European influences offer shades of musical melancholy and - dare I say it - shades of nuance one is unlikely to find Across The Pond.

So, tonight, the first soundtrack I listened to is that from "Deutschland 83". This brings back memories, not least personal ones, as I spent sometime in Deutschland in the summer of 1983. Memories, indeed.

And this was followed by the soundtrack to "Grand Hotel Budapest". Brilliant, bitter sweet, hints of humour, haunting, elegiac. Actually, yes, I love this stuff.

Some early Steeleye Span, not so well known - or remembered - but nonetheless, quite lovely: "The Fisherman's Wife", "The Blackleg Miner", "The Dark-Eyed Sailor", "Lowlands Of Holland", "Lovely On The Water", "The Gower Wassail", and the wonderful "When I Was On Horseback" among others.

Ricky Gervais was fantastic as usual at the Golden Globes, so I thought I'd listen to one of his earlier media ventures from when he looked more like a Jude Law character than a world-famous comedian… I'm listening to Seona Dancing's "Bitter Heart."

Lately I've been interested in Gaelic folk music, like Julie Fowlis. I like it mainly because of the sound of the Scottish Gaelic language, I think it's extremely beautiful:

Irish traditional and folk music is also a pretty vibrant scene, and some of the songs are written and sung in the Irish language (which is closely related to the Scottish gaelic language).
