In a coffee shop.
Most gossipy book on HAK, full of juicy personal details.

I finished it yesterday. It’s probably the lightest book on the man. I would not use it as a main biographical work, but it’s a fairly fun book to read if you want some very general knowledge on HAK. I learned about a few gossips and rumors that were circulating in the 1970’s I was not aware of.

Good luck with this. I found it a bit of a slog to get through. The series is supposed to get better after this one though.

I see what you mean now...

Let me know what you think of this when you are done. I posted my comments earlier in the thread so I am curious to see what you think of.

I was trying to like it up until almost half way through then just finished it just to not be a quitter...was not enjoyable for my taste.

The ending is what ruined it for me. The first and second parts were ok, but that ending. I even read the newest version that has some new material added in by the author. But that ending! It actually turned me off from wanting to read any of the others in the series.

I think so too :) I've already read The Old Man and the Sea and The Sun Also Rises, and I enjoyed those very much (Hemingway's "spare" writing style took some getting used to, but I've come to really appreciate it). I also have For Whom the Bell Tolls, which I will probably read next.

Hemingway had the best titles

As some of you may know, I like to reread Dickens' A Christmas Carol as soon as December arrives and I’ve just finished my latest book (Philip Pullman’s Northern Lights) so the time is right to start something else. I was just wondering if anyone has any recommendations for something Christmassy I could read?

I loved The Northern Lights (by Philip Pullman); hope you derived as much pleasure from it as I did.

Now, while I am not sure I can recommend Christmas literature, but I will ask whether you have taken a look at the Sally Lockhart quartet (also by Philip Pullman)? I thought it excellent.

No I haven’t but will do so. Thanks.

Currently reading "Hidden Empire" by Kevin J. Anderson. Good, solid Science Fiction. Well written and reads very well. Anderson is a great writer and I've yet to run across anything he's written that I haven't liked.

I agree that he’s a good sci-fi writer. I’ve read all of his Dune books (the post Frank Herbert ones) and several of his short stories.

Finished the following three books over the past three weeks or so:

Super Structure: The Key to Unleashing the Power of Story
Write Great Fiction - Plot & Structure
How to Write Dazzling Dialogue: The Fastest Way to Improve Any Manuscript
All of them by James Scott Bell.

Just binged watched Mindhunter on Netflix so I am no re-reading "Journey Into Darkness" which is the second book of the series. When I first read this book, I did just that, read it. Now that I am really reading books, there are several books I am going back and re-reading and I had forgotten about this one until I watched the series. One of the more disturbing yet fascinating books I have read!

Have you read Douglas’ “Obsession”? It’s my favorite among his books.

I have not. However it is on my list. The Netflix series really got me going so I am re-reading this one, I went through and saw he has a ton of books! Holy smokes! Looks like I know which one I will be reading next of his.

I also love Mindhunter (Tv series). I watched it four times already. It’s the only thing that could somehow ease the trauma of Twin Peaks.

Hahahaha.... Not a big Twin Peaks fan, but I loved the Mindhunter series. We blew through it in about a day and half. We could already see the setups for seasons two and three if they let it go that far! I read online the second season will drop late 2018.

Yep! Late 2018 or early 2019. To be honest I am glad that they’re not rushing out. As with The Crown, and Stranger Things to a degree, it’s a superb production. To be a little blasphemous, at times it feels like reading a book, with a nice, steady, slow pace that takes its time to actually tell a story.

I agree hole heartedly. The pacing was not an issue and the different setups and buildups throughout the season were spot on. The scene in the hospital room was pretty darn intense, so much so you could cut it with a knife. Just the sheer size of his hands and how they looked compared to our main characters head. What a great scene, actually all the scenes with Kemper were pretty intense.

Weird Tales, Spring 1988, Issue 290, LXV anniversary edition.

Definitely the weakest issue I’ve read. Fifteen stories of which only one engaged me enough to actually enjoy it, and that story is none other than “Boiled Alive” by master of horror Ramsey Campbell. The other stories try too hard to be weird in a lovecraftian or howardian sense, in a way that this issue of the magazine almost parodies itself.

80% through "Skipping Christmas" by John Grisham. Let’s just say it’s no "Christmas Carol"!
