Just finished the second book in this series, of which the image below is the first. Third is not out yet (i hate reading unfinished series as a rule lol)

The author is a great storyteller, as a matter of fact "story" is the author's framework for guiding the novel. Great writing.

Genre: Fantasy.

Sounds very interesting - I've read a lot on that area; is it any good?
Yes, it's really interesting. It's so comprehensive that IMO it needs a rough previous understanding of the subject matter (bingo!), but the observations and details are enlightening. My previous knowledge wasn't all that great so even the Slánský trial was an eyeopener -- but there's bound to be something in there for you.

I couldn't agree more - a thoroughly gripping and intellectually stimulating series - indeed, it was that rare thing, a superbly acted, intelligent and sometimes thought-provoking TV series. When I first saw it, in the late 1970s, as a teenager, I was utterly absorbed, nay transfixed. And Patrick McGoohan was simply sublime. Prompted by your avatar, I watched the (stunning) intro again on You Tube this evening, and am debating watching a few episodes. Will succumb shortly, I expect......

I applaud your excellent taste; it is one of my all time favourites, too.

Have you ever taken a look at Martin Cruz Smith's "Arkady Renko" series? The first three books, "Gorky Park", "Polar Star", and "Red Square" are all excellent. The fourth, "Havanna Bay" is less good, but not too bad. The fifth and sixth in the series "Wolves Eat Dogs" and "Stalin's Ghost" are a return to excellence. Avoid the seventh entirely. It just simply isn't up to the standard of the others.

The very best thrillers manage to excel by offering both a well-plotted narrative along with solid character development.

There are *four* more Arkady Renko books? Wow. Well, I second the recommendation. Polar Star was my favorite.

Also, consider the Berlin Noir series by Phillip Kerr.

New book for me as well, and plays well into being a parent.

Darth Vader and Son.

If you like Star Wars and are a parent, this book is great. Humourous, and can't-wait-to-get-home-and-play-with-your-toddler sweet.

BL.

I'm taking a look at "Soccernomics", by Simon Kuper and Stefan Szymanski.

Simon Kuper is a fine writer who straddles that interesting area where sports writing meets cultural, socio-economic, historical and political writing; back in the mid 1990s he won the annual William Hill sportswriting award for a terrific book called "Football Against the Enemy" which looked at the strange intersection of soccer, politics and history citing a number of countries as examples of what he wished to describe.

As usual, I have several books going at once.

I am re-reading Enders Game by Orson Scott Card. This is one of my all-time favorite books and I re-read it ever few years.

I am also deeply engrossed in 14 by Peter Clines. If you like thriller/horror/sort-of sic-fi, this is the book. You have the CIA, pretty women, Nicola Tesla, mutated roaches, and a death cult. Oh, and a room in an apartment building with a black hole in the middle of it.''

The Monsters and the Critics by J.R.R. Tolkien, a series of lectures given by Tolkien regarding Beowulf and other mediaeval texts.

Polar Star was great, a terrifically atmospheric claustrophobic book. You'll enjoy the next few (post Soviet, naturally) books. But, as is clear from the context and setting (and, not least from Renko's own background), the sometimes baleful presence of the past is a constant in these books....

The Autobiography of Henry VIII: With Notes by His Fool, Will Somers by Margaret George.

I'm quite enjoying it, I last read it in my late teens so it's been a while. (I'm now in my early forties!) :)

That sounds really interesting....
done reading all these years ago, i've seen the movies, and I'm reading it again....

Very interesting book (but then, I really liked the Harry Potter series), - I especially enjoyed Voldemort's back-story - and an excellent curtain raiser to the final book......which was an absolute tour de force...

Ah, that sounds rather intriguing. Does it live up to its promise?

It's quite fascinating actually. I'm about 40% of the way through as of yesterday and should get through more today. So far a lot of it is research and science-based information regarding introversion. It's a different viewpoint than I've read in other books and it's just as good.
