I've launched back into At All Costs the 11th Honor Harrington book. Started it months ago but got side tracked with a variety of graphic novels. The Star Kingdom of Mantcore had won the war, but the bumbling of a former Administration covered in War of Honor, gives The People's Republic of Haven the advantage as new hostilities break out...

Not a very inspiring cover, I admit, Lol! :p

Agree, that he is one seriously impressive human being, and wonderfully grounded with it, too.

Is the book itself good, or worth reading?

I've only read the first four chapters and so far I've enjoyed it. A lot of it has been about how, as an astronaut, he was trained to think and deal with problems.

It's only ~300ish pages so I don't think you would regret reading it!

Reading 1984 by George Orwell. I got this book about a year ago but I just now decided to read it.

I am currently reading The Great War at Sea: 1914-1918 on my Kindle.

That looks fascinating and sounds very interesting. Please let us know what it is like.

I love George Orwell, and Animal Farm is one of my all time favourites - a timeless classic both as a work of literature (that superb, pellucid prose, and deceptively plain language) and as a work of political philosophy and insight. Sheer, sublime class - the book I'd happily contemplate selling my soul to have written.

Re Ian Fleming, one of my favourites - as a child - was Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, which he wrote; obviously, the movie derived (albeit distantly) from the book, and, as I adored the movie, my parents bought me the book, which I really loved (although the story told by the book is quite different, and, not surprisingly, a little darker, than that told by the movie.

Thanks for responding; I'll keep an eye out for it. He is a very impressive guy, grounded, bright yet very human. His video blogs from space (and not just the superb cover of the Davd Bowie's 'Space Oddity') were incredible.

I'm glad you picked it up again. It really is a very good story and one that keeps you thinking. I haven't read anything by Orwell before this and I really loved his style of writing, I thought it helped make the story very interesting. I'll be looking into reading another book by Orwell, maybe Animal Farm since it's considered one of his notable works.

Animal Farm is a must read! And from now on I will say the same thing about 1984!

I wish it had been as interesting to me back in 1980 when I was reading it for a grade!

As a work of literature, and, as an example of political insight (and philosophy) I actually think that Animal Farm is better than 1984. It really is brilliant, displaying a superlative understanding of the nature of power, politics, and political ideals betrayed, and a superbly well written piece of literature. It is a book that I cannot recommend highly enough.

I just finished the book quoted above. The content of the book was excellent. However, the Kindle version I read was full of formatting errors. For example, it kept calling the First Sea Lord the First Sea Ford.

Was it on a Kindle that you were reading it or in the Kindle App for an iPad? Would it make a difference you think?

I was reading it on my Kindle Keyboard. For the most part, the typos didn't make a difference. However, there were a few times that I wasn't sure of the proper wording and I am not sure I was able to really understand what the author was trying to say.

I'm not sure that reading it on a different device would make any difference. The file I got from Amazon would be the same regardless of the device you are reading it on.

Attached is a screen shot of a couple of reviews at Amazon about the Kindle edition.
