I just started reading The Three Musketeers on my Kindle.

Lovely adventurous story and a great read. Swashbuckling at its best.

A very enjoyable book!

I also recommend Dumas' other novel, The Count of Monte Cristo. My favorite novel of all-time.

Actually, I must say that I loved The Count of Monte Cristo when I read it as a teenager, but I have long felt - a feature I feel can be found in common with many of the works of Charles Dickens - that Dumas could have done with the services of a good sub-editor, or - at the very least, trimmed some of the passages in the middle of the book to a greater extent.

Now, (again, as was the case with Dickens), I know perfectly well that as the books were originally serialised, before being published in book form, it obviously paid both authors to pad out their respective stories for as long as was possible, or credible within the context of the narrative arc.

However, re The Count of Monte Cristo, I have to say that the first hundred, to a hundred and iffy pages are among the most thrilling, gripping and powerful ever penned in a work of fiction; simply outstanding and the sort of story-telling that just grabs you by the throat and does't let go.

Any place but here or there....
'Salem's Lot. The mini series aired this weekend and I enjoyed it, so I picked up the novel today. I haven't read this in years. As I reread I remember why it is my favorite Stephen King novel.

Finished Child 44 some time ago. That was rough and very accurate for the period in Soviet history. I'll probably see the film adaptation, but I have no desire to read the subsequent two novels.

Sorry to gate crash this thread but is anyone thinking of getting the Kindle Voyage?

I'll probably be getting one. I have a 2012 Paperwhite that I bought when they were first released, and it works great, but I do miss having page turn buttons.

And to stay on topic I'm currently trying to re-read Game of Thrones and then the rest of the series since I gave up halfway during the fourth book a few years ago. Also reading The Divine Comedy multiple times for a research paper, bleh.

I have a first generation Paperwhite which I stopped using last year when I bought the iPad Mini Retina. So, no, I'm not considering a new Kindle.

A lovely bitter sweet story, powerful, moving and uplifting at the same time. Some of Oscar Wilde's short stories for children have a similar tone.

It was recommended to me. I wouldn't have thought of reading it otherwise. When I saw the cover I thought it would be the kind of book only kids can enjoy. I know, I shouldn't just a book by its cover

Its tempting on one hand, because I love the paperwhite display, but in reality, its superfluous give my rMini. I can't see spending that much money (and its expensive) for something that the iPad does so well.

Well, I've run into a bit of a problem with my copy of The Three Musketeers. Seems it's missing a chapter. Chapter 3 has been repeated under the heading of Chapter 4. I need to contact Amazon. This is the first time I've ever had such a big error in an ebook.

Is it one of the free editions?

Actually, it is one of those books (Oscar Wilde's children's stories were the same) where the prose is deceptively easy to understand, which can lead people to making the mistake of thinking that this is somehow a simple tale when it is nothing of the sort. There is hardly a superfluous word in the whole story.

To be alb to write prose of such deceptive clarity requires an utter mastery of the language, and a very clear sense of the story to be told.

I have the Penguin Classics (Deluxe Edition). When it comes to Classics written in languages other than English, the translation and translator are very important to me. I research and try to find the best translation possible, one that is faithful to the original.

If you decide to read The Count of Monte Cristo some day, make sure to go for Robin Buss' translation for Penguin Classics or David Coward's translation for Oxford Classics. They are true to the original from what I've read and are unabridged. I personally read the Penguin Classics edition, my sister read the Oxford Classics.
