Since we are in October, I feel like reading a horror book; I'm thinking Anne Rice. Witching Hour, or one of the vampire books... what do you guys think?

Two books, one week :D I hate this in-between period now where I'm looking for something new to sink my teeth into. Hmm, what to read next...

Thought I'd give it a go. Had a fair few "no way!" moments. Great read.

Slightly less compelling than Gone Girl and a tad conventional. Still one of those books you'll want to devour in a sitting or two. Dark indeed.

Oh I thought this was a sequel to Gone Girl.

I think I read Dark Places.. my cousin encouraged me to do so. It was alright, but I didn't feel inspired to read anything else by her.

I probably would have felt the same, if only because the tone was quite somber throughout. Gone Girl is the better book though IMO and it's why I gave Dark Places a go.

That sounds absolutely fascinating. Let me know what you think of it, whether it is worth reading, well-written, has new sources or thoughts, and so on. In any case, that is an extraordinarily interesting period of history, and one I would like to read more about.

I certainly will let you know. But understand I'm a bit of a slow reader sometimes! This book is only 170 pages I think, so give me six months! :p

Hey, I just finished it and ahead of my predicted deadline of 6 months too! :p I finally buckled down and picked it up the other day and started again on it. I read the bulk of it on Saturday and today. It helped a lot by keeping the television turned off and resisting it lure of temptation of being entertained without having to use my mind.

Caution, spoilers below.

It was a good read and I learned a lot about the history of Mexico and how it turned into Mexico in the mid-1500's. That the Aztec's really weren't an ethnic culture per se, but more of an alliance of various tribes loosely affiliated as city-states for economic and trade purposes. I also learned that as a civilization they were far more advanced in farming, economics, societal structure and military organization than I had ever thought. Granted, I never really learned much about them in school.

It was also interesting to note that Cortez' ability to conquer the Aztec's wasn't primarily due to the Spanish military might, of which he didn't have much of, numerically, compared to the Aztec's, but was successful due in large part to exploiting the factionalism between them and the various other tribes/city-states in the region coming together to battle against them. Also, the fact that smallpox was unknown to the natives and wiped out something like 40% of the population in the Autumn/Winter of 1520, whereas the Spaniards were largely immune.

I thought you wrote "Stephen Hawking" novel "Misery" and I was like, Oh, is that his new Quantum Mechanics book? :D

Haha. I don't think I have the patience to read a Stephen Hawking book. They're very dense and generally are not my cup of tea.

Still reading Vince Flynn's Mitch Rapp series (enjoying it)

Once I finish I have the The Expanse series in my queue

How is the Mitch Rapp series? I've never really delved much into it... Because I often judge books by their covers, I tend to not care too much about White House dramas. But please persuade me, I would love to start a new series.

I'm reading "The Fire Next Time" by James Baldwin. Just picked it off my bookshelf last night. I think that this would be a good book to read in one sitting with no distractions. I think that it would be most effective that way.

Rapp is a no nonsense super-blackops-CIAoffthebooks-spy. He gets results because like the bad guys he's after, he doesn't play by the rules. It has some political drama, but a lot of action too. I like it well enough to keep reading.

If you don't like the politics, try Jeffrey Deaver's Lincoln Rhyme series

Is Rapp comparable to Harry Bosch? I love that series

I absolutely love Harry Bosch :) and can't wait for the new book coming out

Rapp is a different setting and character... spy v detective, etc.
Bosch has his inner demons, past, relationships, etc.
Rapp is less introspective and more action oriented... get'er done
Bosch has an intricate puzzle to unravel and solve
Rapp is always racing the clock

Thank you so much. I might have to try Rapp! I have a few books I have to get through first, though.

I've never tried to read Hawking because I don't like him, but that's just me.

However, I have read books breaking down Einstein's reasoning and theories... those are heady material indeed. My brain comes this close to popping after like half a chapter. But it feels good because it gets me using my grey cells. :)
