In the field of fantasy, and YA, I have long been a fan of the Australian writer Garth Nix, specifically his 'Old Kingdom' series (the original trilogy - which was outstanding, was 'Sabriel', 'Lirael', and 'Abhorsen', together known as the Abhorsen trilogy; a standalone 'long' short story, 'Across The Wall' was added to the canon a year or so after the publication of 'Abhorsen').
Anyway, after a wait of around a decade, the fourth book (fifth publication), a sort of prequel which takes place several centuries earlier, called 'Clariel' has just been published. And I have just ordered it, as I rate the entire series very highly.
For lovers of fantasy, this is an excellent series with a very specific ambience; moreover, it comes with strong female characters, (and very well written and conceived strong female characters - many male writers have no idea how to write women other than as the most clichéd ciphers), great narrative, a stunning and entirely original and consistent system of magic, excellent world building, and a wonderful alternative WW1, post WW1 England, (as the 'non-magical' but still quite disturbing world) exceedingly well recreated and imagined. Well worth reading.
