Grand Perspective is a really cool free application, which shows you the size of all of you hard drive's individual files in relation to each other. Here is my 160Gb hard drive, and all of the orange blocks are videos:

that's a lot of pr0n;)
seriously though, Alarm Clock 2 is a neat little reminder program that will use your iTunes playlists to wake you up if you want...

and Insomnia X is good if you don't want your MacBook to go to sleep when you close the lid, which is really useful to me, since I just lost my iPod, and am a student... just put the macbook in my bag, and use it as a slightly smaller zune:p

Perian (codecs for Quicktime to play every type of media type)
Transmission (torrent client)
Synergy (iTunes controller...got it for free for christmas :D)
Google Notifier (shows new emails for gmail)
Ejector (quick eject cds/ipods/usb/dmgs)
Quicksilver (only as app launcher)
iStatNano (quick info about my macbook. mostly to find out what ip I currently have)

What I used before 31/12/08, before my new years resolution kicked in:

World of Warcraft (fairly underground mmorpg)
WoWmatrix (updates WoW addons)
WoWserverstatus ( shows server status )

What would be the best program for downloading music? (I used to have eMule back on PC...)

Personally, I use Transmission. But that's not JUST for music.

You could use Limewire, which is pretty decent.
I used to use Limewire (free) to download Limewire Pro. (which is not free)
I then read on a number of different sites that Frostwire (free) is as good as, if not better than Limewire Pro and has all the same features.

Love little time-wasters like these, like that physics simulator Phun. Didn't even know my macbook had an accelerometer!

SBaGen - Free - "free software (under the GNU General Public Licence) for Linux, Windows, DOS and Mac OS X, that generates binaural tones in real-time according to a 24-hour programmed sequence read from a file."
The infamous (evil and commercial and totally proven sham) I-Doser was made with SBaGen. It is operated entirely through the terminal, with a startup file and a few other scripts included (as well as plenty of sequence .sbg files).

IceTV - Free/Commercial - Dashboard widget, a handy little (Australian) TV Guide, the free version only shows what is showing at the current time - but I don't see that as a very crippling removal of a feature. Works with eyeTV.

Caffeine - Free - Sits in the menubar, click to enable, click to disable. From what I gather similar to Insomnia. I use it when watching videos and I don't want the screen to dim, or the screensaver to kick in.

Virtual Box - Free - "VirtualBox is a family of powerful x86 virtualization products for enterprise as well as home use. Not only is VirtualBox an extremely feature rich, high performance product for enterprise customers, it is also the only professional solution that is freely available as Open Source Software under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL)."
A list of supported Guest OS's can be found here: http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Guest_OSes
I only use it to tinker with Ubuntu Linux. And XP before I switched to using Bootcamp.

Mirage - Free - Spiritual successor to ClearDock. Removes the "dock" graphics from the dock and just leaves the icons. Looks very clean with a good desktop. Looks great with xBack.

xBack - Trial (14 Days) - Shows any screensaver as a desktop, preferences to turn off when in battery use and open at login. Looks great with the Time Machine Screensaver
I use Wallsaver now, because it is FREE.

No matter what I do, I constantly find myself turning back to Audio Hijack Pro. It "hijacks" any app and records JUST the audio for that app, so you don't have to quit everything else.

Oh, and on a similar note, I loveeee iShowU HD. It's just video screen capture, but I love the simplicity and ability to select which part of the screen you want to record. Excellent for helping over e-mail.

I use:

Visual Hub - To convert vids for my iPhone (no longer being developed)
Handbrake - To rip DVDs
iVolume - To level out the volume on my music
Little Snitch - For control over what is calling out to the internet
Combine PDFs - For, well, combining PDFs into a single file
D-Vision - For joining vids, muxing, demuxing
Eigenclock - A little app that puts time and date in full in the menu bar (customizable format) and has a drop down calendar (view only)
Fission - For editing audio files and making custom ringtones for my iPhone (has an option right in the menu)

Audio Hijack Pro - possibly my most favorite 'small' application. :D

Coversutra - Display playing musics Album Art on the desktop. very pretty :D
Synergy - iTunes controller in the menu bar, got it from The Giving Tree from Macheist for Christmas. :D
Quicksilver - Application Launcher and finding contacts
VLC - Only when watching movies and TV shows I haven't converted to iTunes yet.
WoW Watcher - menu bar app, tracks if the World of Warcraft server I play on is online or not. Only really helpful on tuesdays... server maintenance. :p
Google Notifier - Checks for incoming emails to my gmail account.
Adium - for MSN and ICQ

My cool little apps:

Mellel
Bookends
DEVONThink Pro Office (maybe not little, but I use it anyway)
Skim
VLC
Mercury Messenger
Pac the Man X

best freeware apps

Gawker - THE COOLEST app around, it lets you create a timelapse via your iSight (or a timelapse of your desktop, also very cool)!

iStat Pro - CPU Monitoring widget. i use this ALL THE TIME

Quicksilver - Hot key-ed Application Launcher. increases productivity 10 fold if using many apps.

Caffeine - keeps screen from going dim. all you have to do is click the leeetle coffee cup icon and it pours in a fresh brew - and you're ready to go!

Alarm Clock 2 - Wakes up your computer from sleep mode, and plays a custom iTunes song. Easy Wake (increasing volume over time, i.e from 40%-100% over 1 minute) is a great feature and stops the morning 'heart attack' with certain music.

iScrobbler - last.fm scrobbler, sends the songs you listen to - alllll the way to your last.fm profile.

Garagebuy - eBay Client

Wallsaver - if you want to show off your Mac (and feel like wasting valuable processing power) - it lets you have a screensaver as your wallpaper

Macfreepops 2.5 - fakes a pop3 server for your email accounts that require you to pay for pop3 access (for example, Yahoo!)

Rember - tests RAM

and don't forget

Tinker Tool - Lets you Further tweak Mac OS X!

Onyx - Another tweaker, that is more of the OS X version of 'CCleaner'. Cleans the CRAP out of your system (i.e cache, history, recent items, etc).

CalendarBar is amazing! This should be a default function of iCal :)

Very inexpensive too...it was something like $0.99 when I bought it in the App Store

Not sure if this has been brought up here. I found out about Chameleon SSD Optimizer on here some where. And found out about Titanium Software randomly online.

Chameleon SSD optimizer - Free works from 10.6-10.10 It supports all 5 versions of Mac OS X to enable Trim.

Titanium Software - Also recommend has Utilities for Mac
this thread has been dormant since 2011. :D
