I have four iPads sitting here that are old. A mix of mini’s and full size. Are they just trash? What do you all do with this old equipment?

I have a 2013 iPad that I use as an e-reader and music player, and it works pretty well for both things... but not much else.

Depending on how old the iPads you have are, while they might not be able to run the latest apps or browse the web all that well, they might still make good e-book readers, gaming devices (for older games), or at the very least, decent music players.

Since you have multiple devices, maybe consider giving them away to children / younger relatives? 🤔

I keep one in the crapper.

Another is really just a Kindle at this point, for traveling.

I prefer to trade my old devices in but twice in a row now Apple's trade partner has revised my value to $0 after receipt, so I think I'm done with that. I'm getting my 2017 10.5" IPP back and will possibly squeeze a bit more life out of it and then throw it into the e-waste bin at work.

I sell them when I upgrade via rebuy in Germany. I got 700 bucks for my M1 12.9 inch iPad Pro. Really cool service, you just send it in and get the money.

I kept my 6” mini and it lives on the table next to me in bed. I have an 2018 iPad Pro which is my choice when I am out and about, lives in the truck. I traded my M2 12.9 into Apple for the 13 M4. My iPads are my most used Apple device.

Are there any organizations that will take iPads and pass them on to people who can and would actually use them? Organized hand-me-down services, of a sort. There's places like that for musical instruments.

(Side note - how about iPods? There used to be places that specialized in distributing iPods to elderly folks who respond well to music therapy, but I'm having a hard time finding them now.)

Sell them on eBay. I just replaced my kids' 8th gens with 10th gens on Saturday so I am going to dispose of them pretty damn quickly to get some cash back.

My OG 12.9" iPP is the wife's portable TV. Great for the kitchen or where ever, just for streaming services, weather check, etc.

I bought a wall mount for iPads thinking I would mount it in the kitchen but haven't gotten around to it yet.

I sell them either on a hardware resale site here in Switzerland or on Ricardo (the Swiss version of eBay). I always make good money with them.

... 67 percent of repeat ‌iPad‌ buyers keep their old iPads or pass them on to family and friends.

If Apple doesn’t offer a trade-in and you don’t want to sell yourself via Swappa or similar, you can sell it to a place like SmartphonesPLUS. The fallback option is always to give them to Apple for recycling.

Just ran into this with my MBP trade-in just now. Got an email that my trade-in value has changed. Their reason was incorrect serial or description. I double check, nope. I had it correct. I accepted it since reading stories on reddit about people getting their trade-ins back damaged. Don’t want to deal with that. But I’m with you… I’ll find other ways to make money off my devices I no longer need.

I'm waiting on a new iPad to replace my 1st gen iPad Pro 12.9. The old one is going to be mounted in the kitchen for recipes and entertainment while cooking and cleaning. Now I just need to figure out which mount to buy.

I never understand why anyone would use Apple's trade partner and have to deal with this risk (unless there isn't an Apple Store where you live).

I've kept both my dad's and my grandmother's iPad 2s for collection purposes, as well as to fiddle around with older iPad apps. They still power up and stuff, but have been relegated to obsolete and are (obviously) painfully slow for use today. I'm sure you can sell them or give them to a local shop who may use it as a picture frame or something else. Someone will find a use for them.

If you don't know what to do with them, sell them.

eBay and Craigslist are great options, but if you dont want to put in the work, Apple will happily take them from you and give you an Apple gift card based on their value.

Edit: I found this website you could use as well:
