So I have been watching YouTube videos on Window 8 now for some reason and I must say, it is really working me over. I wasn't too sure about it since I haven't used a recent Windows phone and didn't know much about Metro or anything but I saw a video from someone doing a comparison of an iPad and a Windows 8 Surface tablet. Windows 8 was much brighter and just much richer than the iPad and I absolutely LOVE the multitasking they have in Windows 8 where you can run dual apps together by shrinking one to the left or right side of the screen. I am just curious to see how you all feel about this and whether or not you think it will be a serious contender to Apple. I think price point will be a big factor when tha info is released and one thing I'm not too sold on is how you have 2 different worlds with Windows 8. You have the Metro interface but for some things you still have to go in and run the old Windows desktop world. I feel as though they are trying to cater to both worlds to not turn anyone off but it is 2012, it's time for a change. I may actually consider going to a Windows 8 device if the pricing is right. It really depends on what Apple has in store for iPad in iOS6 and in future iPad hardware.

I am not agreeing or disagreeing with you I am just waiting to see how the implementation is going to go for keyboard and mouse. It is definately an OS that was designed for tablet/touch PC use so how they work in functionality for keyboard/mouse will be interesting. I haven't used it and like I said, all my experience is based off of YouTube videos of it so I am definately curious. It looks nice so hopefully it's more then just a pretty face sort to say hah.

In the tablet space it will be a real contender because it will have Microsoft Office and nobody else will. I expect it will play very well in corporate environments, and it will be very successful there.

I've spent a couple of hours with it on a computer and I absolutely hate it. People here who complain about the iOSification of OS X have nothing over the Metroization of Windows!

that's actually not correct, MS is planning on launching office to iOS and Android later this year

Well, that may not be true much longer, because there have been rumors of Office on iPad for ages. And the rumored release date has always been this fall. Also, many corporate environments have already begun to adapt the iPad, so Apple already has a leg up there.

I have a buddy who's a Microsoft fanboy (I know, crazy that they exist huh?) and he really like Win8 on his desktop a lot. There is definitely a learning curve, and it has definitely been planned with touchscreens and multi-touch trackpads in mind. Next year, most PC's will come with these things by default.

I do like how integrated everything feels. iOS feels SO segmented. In this app, out of this app, go into that app. and then the apps don't communicate with each other very well unless both are specifically designed to do so. Microsofts way feels like the future. I think Apple will need to catch up in this regard.

Two very valid points: Office integration and affinity to enterprise setups.

We heavy struggle with those two issues while rollout thousands of iPads.
Enterprise often don't allow iCloud usage because of data security and litigation. Then WebDAV support of iWorks lacks functionality; Apple ID account creation for mass rollout; transfer software between Apple ID, no VPP outside US ...
Here I see MS with its background will have it better integration; potentially.

I still love Apple stuff and I wish they would understand/accept more that needs of enterprises are different from consumer. And act accordingly.

If not I fear in two years the iPad in enterprise is done ... And migrate to Win8

Windows 8 kinda feels like the middle aged Dad at a wedding, dressed in clothes way too young for him and embarrassing his family with his dance moves.

I like Windows 7, it didn't need an overhaul. This is Vista for a whole new generation.

For Windows development work, and for my main desktop (a 27" iMac w/ 2 monitors) I prefer Windows 7.

I confess though, probably 95% of my time is spent in OS X now days.

Windows 8 just isn't well tuned for big screens.

I will give it a look once the Microsoft Surface tablets come out. If they're the same price as a retina iPad I'll probably pass though.

The first rev. of most Microsoft hardware products generally aren't that great, plus it will be a year or so before enough Apps get migrated to Windows RT for it to be solid. (by migrated, I mean, made to work well with touch, not just "it runs, here, you might need a stylus...")

Does it come in a rectangle made up of glass, plastic, or polycarbonate with rounded corners? If so we'll see Bill Gates in court. Better make it a triangle or trapezoid to be safe.

I never really gave any consideration to the enterprise world as far as Win8 is concerned. From the side by side comparision video I watched, while Win8 was a little limited, it def had much better gestures and multi tasking which is a leg up over iPad. Like I said, its all fine on video but lets just see how they execute this. Also we need to see what Apple does, I've waiting for tru multitasking on iPad forever and I definately love how Microsoft pulls it off by locking a screen to the side of another screen on the Surface. Price is also a concern.

As a desktop OS, yes I agree with you but as a tablet OS it looks pretty slick. And my feeling is that MS is slowing switching gears towards mobile computing.

Microsoft has a license agreement with Apple, unlike Samsung.

I tried Windows 8 RP on my laptop when it came out. I stopped using it after a week. It's the first version of Windows I've used seriously that made me think that I might have to stop using Windows and instead move to Mac or Linux.

This is Microsoft's 2nd major redesign of an OS in 2 1/2 years. Windows Mobile was left at a dead end in 2010 when Windows Phone 7 launched. So Microsoft lost many of the built in apps from Windows Mobile.

Now Microsoft has left Windows Phone 7/7.5 users without a real upgrade path (let's just stop with this Windows 7.8 crap). Apps designed for Windows 8 will not work for Windows 7/7.5.

It's like many iOS 5 apps requires...drums roll iOS5. And if someone wants to stay with iOS4 they are out of luck.

The real question for Microsoft is will Windows 8 phones still be fully supported with Windows 9? Because Microsoft is not building up a strong user base by not providing upgrade paths for their Windows users.

Overall I like it, it's different then everyone else and smooth as butter. MS needs to fix the notifications though.

Currently giving the Enterprise 90 day trial a whirl on a spare HDD on my PC and I just can't stand it on a conventional PC.

The whole Metro interface and apps just don't work for me. I find multitasking on the Metro apps to be a pain and don't enjoy it with a keyboard and mouse.

There is one thing that is certain, Windows 8 is not enough to draw me away from using Linux on the desktop.
