Yes M2 comes out I am gonna get one and keep the M1 model as an extra computer.
If I had a M1, M1X or M1Z I'd wait 5-6 year before upgrading. So by year 2026-2027.If you’ve already snapped up an M1, do you see yourself selling it on and upgrading to a 2nd gen device?
Are you purposely buying just the base model now so you feel ‘less’ invested for the above scenario? Or do you think the base will be enough to fend off the lure of M2 power?
Are you planning to keep your current M1 longer, and either expecting the base model to see you through or going 16gb for increased future-proofing?
Or maybe you’re holding back from snapping up a machine now, preferring to wait for 2021?
What might influence your decision to upgrade? Faster CPU, dGPU, 32Gb RAM, 14”/16”?
As for me, I’m pretty sure the base Air would do me just fine and I have the urge to pick one up from a non-Apple store this week. However, I also want to hold on until my 16gb Air arrives mid-Dec in case Parallels actually release a stable Win 10 environment that demands it. The former would make me feel better about upgrading to M2 if appropriate. The latter would make me feel like I have a capable enough tool already.
What do you see yourselves doing?
Sounds like a good plan all around!I did just that, kind of. I got the 7C 8GR 1TB MBA. My 2013 MBP 15" is really starting to struggle in Keynote and Pages and as such is really slowing my workflow down. As soon as a 16" comes out I'll grab that and give the wife the MBA. I've got an exit strategy so I can sort of justify it. I also have bought a new laptop in 7 years so I've put aside plenty of money for purchasing it.
I've ordered an M1 MBP that I've future-proofed with 16GB of RAM, which should be enough for my needs (I'm coming from an 8GB machine). I hope to get quite a bit of life out of this machine and upgrade whenever M7 or M8 seriess Macs come out.If you’ve already snapped up an M1, do you see yourself selling it on and upgrading to a 2nd gen device?

That all sounded crazy until I realized my MBP 15 from 2016 still looks/works as if its brand new. 5-6 years sounds exactly when id consider replacing this machine. If I had a M1, M1X or M1Z I'd wait 5-6 year before upgrading. So by year 2026-2027.
If I kept to a 2012 Macbook Air I'd immediately get the first Macbook Pro 16" with Apple Silicon. That body design came out less than 13 months ago so no redesigned body until year 2026(?)
If I kept to a 2015 iMac 27" I'd wait until the redesigned body with the same sized or larger screen would come out by 2022.
I would get the base unit hopefully with 16GB or more and buy 2TB Portable SSD for less than $240. Apple charges $200 to bump up internal storage from 256GB to 512GB.
And probably won't be. *sigh*I see this thread and it makes me wait for the M2 - I feel like this is Apples A4 moment, so the A5 version will be a huge leap.
