Some of the software that I need to use for classes, most notably UGS NX 5 (CAD software), is Windows-only. Other than those things I use it for games (Battlefield 2142) that still haven't been ported to Mac. Its been easy to find Mac replacements for most of the everyday stuff that I used to use my desktop PC for.

I don't use it that much in all honesty. For starters, it makes my MBP way too hot and I get really crappy battery life in XP. But I do some gaming on it (particularly classic older games), and also run SoundForge (for when Audacity sometimes won't work for me) and some other small apps.

I have VMWare Fusion Beta running and XP Pro runs great...but, what do you do with your setup?

I find myself rarely ever launching XP....

Work. :(

Unfortunately, all the offices I have ever worked at use windows only (stupid AutoCad). I still have my "old" Gateway laptop that has XP on it and I use that quite a lot (for work and lounging around). It angers me sometimes. :)

I did just get my hands on Vectorworks and have been toying with that. I hope to be mac only within the next year or 2.

What do you use Windows for?

I have not installed BCamp/Win yet. Brand new to the Mac world! But I plan to immediately try to run MS FlightSim X - my favorite and only "game activity". And also a smattering of Business programs i cannot o w/o.
Any experience among you folks about FS X under B/C+Win?
I'll appreciate!

some .NET programming at times. also once in a while you end up needing to use certain apps that wont work on OS X. like recently i wanted to download all my pics from flickr. i found this neat little app which would do the same, but it was on .NET! windows to the rescue

Microsoft publisher / office - any file anyone ever gives me to print has generally seen some pc action at some point. I generally use distiller to create pdf's from thier ms office / publisher files and then lay them out in pages (weird I know, but I cant get my boss to shell out for Indesign - yet!)

Strangely adobe reader 8, as it isn't supported under mac os x 10.3 which I run on my mac mini at work, and some of the newer pdf functions arn't supported by preview :(

Home is all about the tigers tho- got one on my desktop, and another nibbling at my feet...

For bit density (and others interested) re: High-end Windows Chess on Mac

Hello, bit density (and others interested)-

I'm very interested in running high-end Windows chess programs with OS-X 10.5.2 on my 2.2GHz MacBook with 2GB RAM and lots of storage. I'm especially interested in some of the very programs you mentioned in a recent post, especially: Fritz, Fritz Trainer, Personal Chess Trainer (which is now Chessimo), Mentor, playable e-books at ChessPublishing.com, and other programs that seem to require ChessBase.

I'd very much like to email/message/talk with you regarding your experiences with Parallels and VMWare Fusion, particularly with running the above chess programs. Any advice you could give me before I make these major software investments would surely be appreciated.

Thanks very much.

For office apps. like Excel,

i wonder why they didn't make Excel in Office 2008 for Mac as great as Excel 2007 is... especially, why isn't it compatible with VBA?

Why do I use Windows?

1. Gaming. (Mainly Half-Life: The Orange Box)

2. Watching DRM-encrypted WMV videos.

Hummingbird Exceed, which is a terminal emulator I need to access my Alphaserver running OpenVMS. OSX terminal connects fine, and emulates a VT-series terminal OK, but I can't find a way to make OSX/terminal recognize a DEC keyboard. As anybody who's ever used a VMS editor knows, working on a keyboard without the editing keypad is only for emergencies. So when I got rid of my last PC, I had to install XP on a MBP or drag an old VT520 out of the barn.

Also I have some specialized RFID software that's only available for Windows. Since I shut down my company I only have to use it two or three times a year, and doing so on the MBP/XP should work just fine.

I will say that just as soon as I connected the MBP/XP to my network, it found my NAS and held onto it perfectly, over reboots. My main OSX (Leopard) complaint is that working with my NAS box is always a big headache. Finder finds it but won't open it, or doesn't find it...it's annoying.

Viewing certain web sites in IE that only seem to work right in IE. Like hotmail . . big surprise and amazingly google docs spreadsheet

I also really like Microsofts "high end" photo editor. its quick, convenient and the tools I need are right at hand.

I've also now got office on the VM. I use it to work on the highly formatted and macro'd docs that are templates from our PMO.

I currently use Windows XP Pro to test sites in IE7 and also Firefox as I only use safari on OSX and I see no point to have firefox installed.

Now that I actually think about it... I only use Windows for my Blackberry. There still isn't a viable solution for syncing, backing up and copying files to and from my Blackberry for mac yet. Other than that I don't use Windows for anything else.

When I first got my MacBook there were some sites that pretty much refused to work except in IE, so I used Windows for IE then, but now I've simply decided if a site doesn't allow the use of Safari, then I don't really need to view that site.
