Mostly everything lately, since I'm planning to remove OS X from my Macbook.

Mostly use mine for Java development. Apple just doesn't provide the tools for Java dev unfortunately.

I have a dedicated rig it is used for

Gaming, Music, Watching DVDs, Running Secure CRT (for setting up of FreeBSD / other unix / linux software)

We don't have Java 6 yet (unless you have a 64bit intel machine and it might work), but we do have Eclipse, NetBeans and Java support in XCode.

Which tools are you missing for Java?

Its the Java 6 that I'm after but I have a 32 bit machine running Tiger.

what i use windows for

By the end of the month I will be a mac convert. By then I will have saved enough money to go and buy myself my dream machine mac. In the mean time, I have been researching what programs I will need so I won't have to run windows. then I can run pc-bsd on my current desktop.

Now to answer the question, I only use my windows machine to run anyDvd and dvd shrink.(no I don't pirate movies-I own everything I have made a back up of) I will not be installing windows in any form on my new mac. Not that there is anything wrong with it, its just that why would I install the very operating system that caused me to switch to macintosh on a macintosh!!

on the surface it sees like the ultimate in flexibility. when you peel back the layers you see something different. If windows will run on a mac, why would developers bother to write mac versions of their software? when you look at it from the developers stand point, there is no real reason to write mac specific code when the windows code will run on a mac and leave it to the individual user to fiddle with boot camp, VMware and the like. not to mention having to have a licence for two operating systems just to run one computer. If you are a windows xp convert that isn't a problem because you all ready have a windows license. If you bought a new computer with vista, you didn't get a full install dvd just some jinky restore disk. which means you will have buy a second license for the operating system you wanted to get shed(that you already paid for once) of in the first place.

from what I have been able to read on my own, the no. 1 complaint among mac users is lack of software. The ability to run windows (ergo any windows software) is an impediment to developers creating more mac specific software.

my ultimate goal is to cut the windows tether all together. Until I can, I will continue to run windows on my current desktop. Even if it is just to run two applications.

My switching to a mac wasn't some I hate windows knee jerk reaction I have been studying this option for some time. With the exception of AnyDvD and DvD shrink I have found mac compatible software for all my needs.

It just doesn't make any sense to change from one operating system to another just to install the old one on your new platform because the new one doesn't have the software you need. If there isn't any OSX software for your needs or desires, then maybe a mac isn't the computer you need to be using.

I can't wait until I get my new mac in my hands.

Those Internet Explorer only websites...

Microsoft MoneyPlus

Games in the future

Bootcamp and Parallels 3.0

Only thing I use it for is updating my Zune. (on a different family member's computer) I actually really like the Zune and its software, Microsoft just needs to make a Mac version.

Logically it doesn't make sense I know, but Apple has some great developer tools and a great community of 3rd party developers.

The convenience of not having to go through bootcamp or the elimination of the overheads of running virtualization software are more than enough incentives for customers to keep buying Macintosh native applications (and therefore for developers to continue to produce them).

Have you heard of an application called Handbrake? I believe that will achieve similar functionality to the two applications mentioned. It may not do everything.

yes I have heard of handbreak, I have even tried the windows version. the problem with handbreak is that it chokes on the newer incryption methods. anydvd makes shortwork of anything that will allow the original disk to be played in run of the mill set top dvd player. It will even decrypt blueray and the now defunct hd-dvd

Visio and MS Project

Like Excel and Word, Visio and Project are industry standard apps...gotta have them in my line of work.

Well now that my mac has been in my hands for about a month I must say that I now officially don't used windows for anything other than to play doom 3 and unreal tournament. These are rather old games but they're still fun. When 1st person shooters are more common on osx I will turn my windows machine into a really big myth tv box.

Photoshop

I had a good disk of Photoshop 7 which I'd used for years, and it installed nicely on my VMfusion XP. Interacts nicely with the mac. Saved a lot of money. On the mac I use Graphic Converter. Also Quicken which is better than on the mac, although I think I'm going to the cloud on that.
Spider.
Chrome.
My goal is to use nothing Microsoft. On the mac side I use NeoOffice, and Pages for page layout works fine.
