Lothian Buses in Edinburgh, Scotland. Probably the best bus company in the world (voted the UK numerous times). So many buses, so many services, and it is really cheap. £1.20 fare and go any distance, or £3.00 for a day ticket and go on as many buses any distance as you want all day. They run night buses every hour from midnight till 5am too.

And, on Hogmanay (New Year's Eve), everyone gets free bus rides to ensure everyone can get home safely.

Lothian Bus service best in the world? I would have to disagree; the only good service is the #22. Otherwise they are probably late, and then 3 arrive at once or the one you want drive past you. 9 times out of 10 the drivers are grumpy.

Sigh! The used to be good…. that said, there Hogmanay offer is nice

(sorry had to get that off my chest, its been building up for a while ):)

I'm amazed they're still that cheap- I remember them being £1.50 a day back in '99, but always preferred walking about like.

Posting the Padarn (back end, naturally) as its got the most scenic routes but will try to get back with the lesser spotted Silver Star.

Showing my age here, but I remember when they were not a flat fare,
£0.50 - £1.00+ depending on how many stops. - i feel old

Don't suppose you could help me with a questions thats been nagging for a few years now- do you remember the other company that ran busses around town? I remember they were cheaper per stop but ran at something like £2 for a day (heard that they stopped operating a few years ago though). Just been at the back of my mind for a while now...

Edinburgh has changed so much since I used to live there- not just after the fire and shops changing (do miss James Thin) but whole areas of town seem different- could barely recognise Tollcross when I went up at the start of the year. Fine city though- hope you're getting through the winter fine.

Not sure of any bus company that has stopped operating in Edinburgh,
The other is First Bus, (several years back they were called SMT, first bought them) Lothian Buses used to go by the name LRT. Will have a wee think, anything comes to mind will post back

It's a shame, 7 years after the fire they still have not rebuild some areas on the Cowgate, I spent many a night down there during the festival... ahh good old times.

Up until November I passed Tollcross daily on my way to work, for around 9+ years, so the changes have sunk in slowly.

The winter has been brutal, coldest in my memory plus the snow has been on the ground for over a month now

Lothian Buses are really reliable. Even though, I grew up out at Fairmilehead, and had to get the 4 bus to school. Came whenever it wanted, and I recall getting lines and detention for consistently being late because of that damn service! But now, I get the 34 to university, and that is reliable. I use the Edin Bus tracker app for my iPhone so base my life around that when it comes to timing the bus, so I guess that's why I'm happy! Can't remember the last time I read a bus time table.

Though, what is with the new 35 bus? Leather seats, but everything feels hard and cramped! The driver is a lot lower down, and the seats downstairs at the back feel like outside a torn down council estate bench!

The 22 bus is ridiculous though. How many do you need? Trouble is, whenever I get one to go and see a mate out at Corstorphine, I end up waiting 12 minutes on one! Otherwise when I don't need one, there's a few every couple of minute!

Thank you very much- First Bus is exactly the one that I couldn't remember, and my apologies as I was thinking of Newington (particularly the Clerk St area) and not Tollcross.

I remember the winters being savage from my time there but what it must be like now doesn't bear thinking about- best of luck to you and your boiler (doesn't it traditionally hit bottom at February? Probably best not asking...).
Still, finest place I've ever lived and hope to again someday.

Regards,
K

That's what the newest style of buses looks like.

Wow- beautifully clean place you've got there. How are people getting on with the new 'bendy busses'? There was great agitation when they were introduced into London, the new mayor made his ticket off of the back of them!
