How often does it crash?
2 times today, but it was due to a seriously loaded system due to a freeware DVD ripping program I was using. Otherwise the system dosen't crash . I have 3 systems running OS X and their uptime is usually 2 + weeks, to only be rebooted to unplug them for lightning storms.

How often do you feel compelled to reinstall the system?
Not really ever, however I experiment quite heavily with the OS, and external devices. I like to play, but that is part of my profession that will be listed below

How do your non-computer professional family members handle OS X?
Just fine, I have my G4 Dual 533 with OS X 10.4.2 out on loan to a friend who has since stopped using his Sony Viao laptop with XP installed, unless he needs it for some reason.

Do you still keep a Windows machine around and why?
Yes, but it is for work, and their proprietary applications that require XP. My Intel box is loaded with linux, and my work laptop is only booted into linux when I am at home using it for personal uses.

What annoys you the most?
Software developers that don't have packages That I can use on OS X as opposed to Windows. Applications from my work are part of this . If I could run them on my G4 or G5 I wouldn't need the Laptop at home.

Would you ever switch back?
Nope, I support Windows systems (among others including Solaris, Linux, BSD) at work. Out of all of the OS's I have to work with, I like Windows the least, and have to work on it the most.

Would you quit a job that wanted to make you switch back?
It isn't a concern of mine.

What OS did you use before OS X (non Apple OSs) ?
Red Hat, Fedora Core, Open BSD,FreeBSD, Solaris, XP, 2000, 98, 95, 3.11, WFW, DOS 6.22, Novell Netware 3.12, Novell Netware 4.11, Novell Netware 5, Novell Netware 6

What is your profession; or area of study if a student?
IT Network Engineer is what I am "titled" but I have worked on lots of aspects of business enterprise networking, and even desktop support in the past.[/COLOR

How often does it crash?
If by crash, you mean completely go down and need a restart (aka Kernel Panic), about once every 6 months. This PowerBook is a year old, and it's crashed twice. The first time I was trying to play a DVD over a wireless network from a DVD in the drive of another computer on the Network. Definitely not a normal activity, I just wanted to see if it was possible. The second time, it just happened. I wasn't doing anything unusual

How often do you feel compelled to reinstall the system?
Never. I reinstalled the OS when I upgraded from Panther to Tiger on this machine, never besides that.

How do your non-computer professional family members handle OS X?
One of my brothers uses a Mac as his main computer. He's sort of the one that got me to switch. Another brother uses the Macs to use the Internet, and does some video editing with them. Otherwise, he still uses his PC. He complains a little about Macs, but not because he has any legitimate complaints, just because he wants to bug me I think.

Do you still keep a Windows machine around and why?
Yes, I have a Windows PC to run PSPICE for school. It gets booted once a month or so when I'm in school, and never otherwise.

What annoys you the most?
Can't really think of anything that annoys me much. I guess the weird little noise that my PowerBook makes when doing graphics intensive things kinda bugs me. The superdrive is a little noisy too.

Would you ever switch back?
No.

Would you quit a job that wanted to make you switch back?
I can't imagine a job making me switch back at home. If I had to use Windows at work, that probably wouldn't be enough to make me quit.

What OS did you use before OS X (non Apple OSs) ?
DOS, Windows (all versions), Linux, Solaris. Also used Mac System 6 a long time ago.

What is your profession; or area of study if a student?
I'm an electrical engineering student, but I do web design and video editing and DVD authoring to make money.

Alright, here we go...

How often does it crash?
My Mac rarely crashes. The only time is used to crash frequently was when CompUSA installed cheap-tastic RAM. It used to crash when working with heavy apps like Photoshop. Since I removed the RAM it has only crashed once do to a rare kernal panic. But other than that, it's been smooooth sailing. :) Oh and by the way, view my sig for my system's specs in case you are wondering.

How often do you feel compelled to reinstall the system?
Not really all that much. I thought about it the other day to speed up system performance, but it wouldn't really have any effect on it. I'm not saying my system is slow, I am just in need of more power. But I am getting a Power Mac G5 soon, so that will definitely help.

How do your non-computer professional family members handle OS X?
I've switched my mom and dad and they love it. They never have any of those annoying spyware problems (which I always had to fix by the way), no system slowdowns... it's really great, especially for me. ;)

Do you still keep a Windows machine around and why?
Yes, my Windows system sits to the right of me. I use it mainly for gaming or when friends come over so we can both go on the Internet or something like that. But overall, it's my gaming machine.

What annoys you the most?
It doesn't really annoy me anymore, but the mouse acceleration takes some getting used to. But it's not a big deal. After a little while with it, you get used to it.

Would you ever switch back?
Hell no. Apple is such a high quality company with high quality products. I really enjoy looking forward to what Steve has up his sleeve next. I never saw anything as good as Apple's while I was a Windows-only user. Everything they build is just... nice. :)

Would you quit a job that wanted to make you switch back?
No because I know and use both operating systems very well. Most likely when I get a career, I'll be working on a Mac since I am a graphic design major in college right now.

What OS did you use before OS X (non Apple OSs) ?
I was always a Windows user until I made the switch to Mac last September. I've used Windows 3.1, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 2000 and Windows XP (Home, Pro and Media Center Edition). So I have very good experience with them all around. Oh and I've also used Palm OS if that counts... Windows Mobile I have yet to use however, but it looks nice. Oh and I've used Linux for a couple nights while away on vacation so that was interesting.

What is your profession; or area of study if a student?
I am a Computer Graphic Arts major in college right now. I am in my second year and loving it. One day I plan on either starting my own graphic design business or working for another company as a graphic designer.

That was fun :)

Alright, I want in on this...
I will be talking about the comp in my sig that I have had more only 6 months, But many answers will be regarding having an apple for my main computer...which I have had for about 5 years.

How often does it crash?
I don't think that my OS has EVER crashed in OS X, I have had lots of application crashes (safari on closing and maybe a couple others I think that word when down a couple times)

How often do you feel compelled to reinstall the system?
Well a few months ago I started to use X11 for some of my science applications & OOo, etc and I had a couple installs of the UNIX apps gone bad so I reinstalled... did I have to? no but it was getting to the point that my comp needed to be cleaned of old junk and that is a good way to do it... Other than that I only do clean installs when new OS's come out.

How do your non-computer professional family members handle OS X?

I got my very computer literate dad to make the switch (he loves it), we had had a DOS/windows PC since I was a little kid and my mom NEVER touched them... that is until the iMac came... now she is regularly chating, planing vacations, making purchases... all that good stuff... she would have never done this on a PC...

Do you still keep a Windows machine around and why?
Well my GF has one and it is in our room so I do have access to them also my lab has PCs but I am in the process of putting linux on my GFs and the guys in the lab hate windows as much as me so we have some of those comps dual booting linux so that we only use windows when we have to... Other than that the only real reason to keep PCs around are for some of the equipment that we use... they have weird hardware or no mac/linux drivers...

What annoys you the most?
I am not really sure... maybe finder... it could be improved .... probably will be in leopard

Would you ever switch back?
Not at this point... but I am not opposed to a nicer OS... if there ever will be one. also I can see myself using linux more in the future, but really only as a learning experience... but as long as Mac OS X and apple are doing what they are doing now, I will always have a mac around.

Would you quit a job that wanted to make you switch back?
You mean to work with? Or personally? To work... I don't care as long as my productivity does not decrease (which I guess it most likely would) but I would not stake a job on an OS... Personally, I doubt that a company would ever do that but yes I think that I would quit I don't think that companies should be in control to that extent...

What OS did you use before OS X (non Apple OSs) ?
DOS, Windows

What is your profession; or area of study if a student?
Graduate Student in Chemistry

*How often does it crash?
no kernel panics that i can remember, worst is usually something like finder hanging - did have problems with panics when my last imac started having major hardware issues.
other than that, the odd app issue - but far less than windows.

*How often do you feel compelled to reinstall the system?
never, temptation is only there because its what i do with my pc so frequently.

*How do your non-computer professional family members handle OS X?
pretty well, now get more complaints about the internet not working than the computer :)

Do you still keep a Windows machine around and why?
yup, habit :) actually software developer, so need one for dev purposes
- games would be another reason, mac hardware per $ is just a bit much.

*What annoys you the most?
spec per $, but doesnt really annoy me... given the stability its worth it.

safari is a common complaint, but in fairness most of these are the same of other browsers - and that is the incompatibitly with the many IE oddities that some websites (unknowningly usually) exploit. but this seems to have got alot better these days.

weakest iLife is probably iphoto, but thats got better

dashboard, far too memory intensive - just like konfab, basically nice idea, looks lovely - but just dont really find the use outweighs the memory footprint reqd. (of course i should probably upgrade from the 1gb ive got!)

everytime release something new - and i have to surpress the upgrade urge :)

... and cant wait for apple to give me a wireless 3 button mouse with scroll wheel ;)

*Would you ever switch back?
as my 'consumer' device, seem unlikely at the moment - but then if someone else does it better - then why not, regardless of if its back , or somewhere else.

*Would you quit a job that wanted to make you switch back?
no, use pc's,linux and solaris everyday - thats work, its why your paid to be there :)

*What OS did you use before OS X (non Apple OSs) ?
dos, windows (yup original) to all current versions (server, desktop, pro forms), linux, solaris, palm os ;)

*What is your profession; or area of study if a student?
software developer

strange, you said you wanted objective/techy answers - but then seem to ask mainly emotive questions ... e.g. "Would you quit a job... ", "What annoys..." , "feel compelled"

Just fine. They can get around on their own.

Do you still keep a Windows machine around and why?
No.

What annoys you the most?
32mb VRAM in the iBook.

Would you ever switch back?
Always been a Mac User.

Would you quit a job that wanted to make you switch back?
Yes.

There is a reason I asked that question and it wasnt because of my emotions. It indicates if the respondent is a reasonable person or an unreasonable fanatic like many windows users would claim.

Got a 2005 15 inch Powerbook, superdrive, 128 vram and 1 gig ram

How often does it crash?

- Hasn't yet...

How often do you feel compelled to reinstall the system?

- Not often, every now and then it crosses my mind, but I usually just run System Optimizer and forget about it.

How do your non-computer professional family members handle OS X?

- Made my mom get an iMac because I got tired of servicing the 533 celeron of way back when. Installed XP on it, decided it sucked, deleted it, it took half my hard drive with it! Mom's now addicted to iMovie and her Sony DV cam. She loves the thing, I taught her how to use iMovie, now she's doing great. Still trying to get her to buy a digital still camera so she can discover iPhoto.

Do you still keep a Windows machine around and why?

- I did for awhile, so we had 3 computers in the house to play Starcraft with, plus I still loved BeOS.

What annoys you the most?

- Disk Burning. Using DVD-RWs as normal folders doesn't really work. iDvd won't just burn a video to a disk. Toast is great, but not as useful as Nero. Toast's leaps and bounds better, still though.

Would you ever switch back?

- Hahahahahahahahaha!!!!!! Oh that's funny!

Would you quit a job that wanted to make you switch back?

- I'm currently in the process of yelling at Macromedia about how much the web flash plugin sucks on mac, but other than that, as far as work goes, macs are just way more productive (exposé is godsent with lots of files). My school installed this Cisco BS, but there was an uprising in the IT staff (a few of whom use macs... the irony...) and they let the macs bypass it.

What OS did you use before OS X (non Apple OSs) ?

- 95, 98, XP (then I deleted it, bwahaha!) and BeOS (did everything XP wanted to do, only about 20 times faster)

What is your profession; or area of study if a student?

- I do flash game programming and video editing mainly (I love you, FCP!). Both on my powerbook. I'm a psych major, but that hasn't really had anything to do with my computer yet...

Worse thing being a mac user has done to me? I curse like crazy whenever I have to use windows...

I am a potential convert to Mac. However, I am also a person that likes to have the full information on a system. I would really like to know what people DONT like about their macs. I have heard quite a bit about what people like about them and I have done quite a bit of research.
I don't think I'm going to help you dig up any dirt on Macs, but I'd be happy to answer your questions to help you get as complete a background (at least from my experiences) as possible.

How often does it crash?
Well, crash is a pretty vague term. My PowerBook (my primary system) hasn't kernel paniced or frozen up since I installed Mac OS X on it on September 18, 2002. I have had odd applications crash, but very infrequently.

How infrequently? Lets look at the logs (dates of the last three crashes) of my most used applications:
Acrobat 5.0.5: 2005-09-11, 2003-10-03, 2002-09-19

Adobe GoLive 6.0.1: 2005-09-05, 2005-02-03, 2003-11-17

Adobe Photoshop 7.0.1: 2005-07-06, 2005-05-12, 2003-08-2
Adobe ImageReady 7.0.1:
AppleWorks 6: 2003-03-06 (I mainly use TextEdit)

The worst crash I ever had was the Acrobat crash on 2003-10-03 because it didn't just crash the app, it crashed my session. That is, when the crash happened... I was then looking at the login screen.

I very rarely shut down this system (usually to take it some where... which I don't do much any more). So most of the times it has been shut off were due to power outages. I usually have had uptimes well over 100 days (the longest being around 260 days).

I'm not sure you could get much more detailed than that (I could add in the times I guess).

How often do you feel compelled to reinstall the system?
As I said earlier, I installed Mac OS X on this system on September 18, 2002. Mac OS X has never been reinstalled on this system... it is running the original installation of 10.2 (plus updates).

That makes this installation a little more than three years old.

How do your non-computer professional family members handle OS X?
My wife was handling Mac OS X (she had her own account on my PowerBook) so well that it was interfering with my work. This summer I got her her own PowerBook (which is running 10.3.9).

Do you still keep a Windows machine around and why?
I had a job supporting Windows from 1997 to 2000, and when I started up my consulting business I supported both Macs and Windows until the summer of 2002.

I have Windows 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 3.1, 3.11 for Workgroups, 95, 98, 98SE, Me, NT 3.1, NT 3.51, NT 4.0 (both Workstation and Server) and 2000 Pro.

That being said, I have never had Windows running on any actual hardware that I've ever owned. I stopped having any Microsoft software on any system that I own back in 2002. All my Microsoft Software in in a box in storage now.

In other words, No... I don't keep a Windows machine around.

What annoys you the most?
When companies take open standards and make them proprietary to force people to use their products.

Would you ever switch back?
I never switched, so there would be no switching back.

When I started using computers PCs (running DOS and later Windows) were the tools of secretaries and people who did data entry. I started on Macs, added NeXT, SGI and Sun to the platforms I was familiar with, and didn't touch a Windows system until 1997.

Would you quit a job that wanted to make you switch back?
I wouldn't work at any job that required me to work with any product of Microsoft Corporation.

Microsoft attacked one of my clients back in 2002 and I was required (for my client's sake) to work with Microsoft's lawyers who had accused my client of pirating Microsoft software. This was a publication house that only used Macs, and who's primary software came from Adobe and Quark. Two people had Microsoft Office on their systems (Office 98 and Office 2001, neither were designers).

I was still forced to make a complete accounting of every last bit of Microsoft software in their possession and then account for how they acquired it.

There is no reason for me to use Microsoft products, and I will never use Microsoft products.

What OS did you use before OS X (non Apple OSs) ?
Other than Apple operating systems, I used NEXTSTEP/OPENSTEP, Solaris and IRIX. I played with a few flavors of Linux, but was much happier using the Unix variantes listed above.

What is your profession; or area of study if a student?
I work as a computer consultant and web designer. My background is in mathematics and physics, my area of study was differential geometry and differential topology (I enjoyed aspects of homotopy theory and Morse theory).

I didn't really have much background in computers (other than what I needed to know to aid my research in mathematics) until 1997 when I took a break (a very long break now) from school. Computers were very easy for me to pick up and problem solving/trouble shooting wasn't that hard for me either.

Windows and Macs had too much documentation which made them less challenging, so I started playing with other systems that were more unique like SGIs and NeXT (both of which I had previous experience with as a user). I really enjoyed Apple's Rhapsody operating system when it came out... and now that most everyone has moved on, I pretty much have Rhapsody all to myself. :D

Well, I hope that helps a little.

I'll bite.

How often does it crash?
Hardly ever. I'd say about 5 times total. Apps can crash more often, but other than a minor inconvenience, it's no big deal.

How often do you feel compelled to reinstall the system?
I do a clean install whenever I upgrade. Otherwise, there's no reason to reinstall. Back in the Windows days (Win95), I would do a spring cleaning every year or so.

How do your non-computer professional family members handle OS X?
I convinced my sister to switch and she bought a 1.8 G5 iMac 17".

Do you still keep a Windows machine around and why?
My wife has a Dell P4 laptop. She got it free. The next machine will be a Mac, though. I still have some older Windows machines lying around, but I don't actively use them.

What annoys you the most?
Well, my iBook 500 is showing it's age. It's quite slow. Also, Apple's tactics bug me a little. I'm referring to Apple requiring the latest OS to run Safari, etc. but iTunes can still be run with 10.1. Obviously, they don't want to cut off a revenue stream.

Would you ever switch back?
Never say never.

Would you quit a job that wanted to make you switch back?
No.

What OS did you use before OS X (non Apple OSs) ?
Windows95; WinNT at work. Also, we're currently on WinXP at work now. Before that, I've had an Amiga500 and before that a Commodore 64 and Atari 800XL and Atari 400.

What is your profession; or area of study if a student?
Process/Pharma Engineer.

1) I have 3 Macs here they have never crashed. Apps crash now and then, but I can't say I can remember the last time one did.

2) I don't reinstall the OS for no reason, this isn't Windows. I consider doing fresh installs when a new OS is released. I did a fresh install on my Power Mac G5, my PowerBook, and a plain old upgrade on my GFs iMac G5 all 3 machines are running perfectly (from Panther to Tiger).

3) The same as everyone else with a mouse and keyboard. If you mean do they have problems using it? No.

4) I've never had a Windows machine.

5) What annoys me? About OS X? Nothing. About Mac hardware? Nothing, some people might say it is expensive but I believe you get what you pay for.

6) No

7) What a retarded question, I work for money. If my work wants me to use Windows they can provide me a Windows machine to use. They do, I use it at work. My job mainly involves me using Windows 2000 Server / 2003 Server so I guess I don't care at all. :)

8) GNU/Linux, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSD

9) Another pointless question. My job description calls me a system engineer if that helps at all.

How often does it crash?
The System would have crashed less than 5 times (10.4.x), apps crash a hell of a lot more frequently.

How often do you feel compelled to reinstall the system?
There are days when I feel argh! Going to reinstall at the end of the year, but these are passing phenomina. I don't think my dad would be keen.

How do your non-computer professional family members handle OS X?
They handle it alrite, mum still takes a minute or two to find the purple e entourage icon in the dock.

Do you still keep a Windows machine around and why?
Yes Compaq laptop, mum got it free through her work. Used it, helped me stay Mac.

What annoys you the most?
Not being able to upgrade graphics card in iMac, friends that think (defaultly) everyone uses a PC, friends that hate Apple and Mac because they are 'Macs'

Would you ever switch back?
I wouldnt go to Windows, it would have to be a big thing for me to change from Mac, a Google OS?

Would you quit a job that wanted to make you switch back?
Probably not, I can handle using Windows boxes

What OS did you use before OS X (non Apple OSs) ?
Windows 95 VERY rarely. Apart from that anything from Apple OS 7 upwards, still have 9 on CD.

What is your profession; or area of study if a student?
Student, at secondary school. Probably will be computing

I'm too lazy to break the quote apart.
Like a lot of people, there are some applications that crash, but the system may have crashed once or twice in about 18 months. Safari and Silver Keeper (backup software from LaCie) are the only ones that have crashed on a regular basis. Although, I realized the other day that some of the SK crashes are the software just struggling.
Reinstall? On my last computer, it was every four months. Here, I did an A & I with Tiger, but nothing else.
My parents were afraid of Macs, but my wife and I got them an iMac to thank them for all their help with our wedding. I think the biggest problem they have had was trying to use the ctrl-click. A week later it was normal.
I keep my Vaio around for law school exams. That's it. Oh yeah, and also to go to tryfreegames.com.
I think Safari annoys me the most - crashes and fools that don't test their pages for Safari can be a pain. But I keep FF around.
I will probably never switch back. It may happen, but I can't foresee a reason.
Um...I don't see how a job could tell me what to use at home. At work I use XP (until last Thurs, I was using 2000)
I used WinME and WinXP
I'm in law school, I guess getting ready to enter the legal profession.

How often does it crash? My eMac has had two kernel panics: 1 when I was playing Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 and I had iTunes running at the same time…with 256MB RAM; and the other time was for no reason whatsoever. I don’t think I have had any under Panther OS 10.3.9.
How often do you feel compelled to reinstall the system? Every year or so just to make sure the computer is running at it’s full potential.
How do your non-computer professional family members handle OS X? All of my family uses Windows XP, but my mom thinks that OS X looks cool.
Do you still keep a Windows machine around and why? I keep my HP Pavilion laptop around because I can play most of my games; plus I have a couple of applications that are not Mac compatible. Plus my mom doesn’t want me to sell my HP since it was a present for Christmas.
What annoys you the most? The fact that my favorite game (Need For Speed) isn’t available for Mac. Halo also runs better on PC than my eMac. No longer can people say that Mac is too expensive. The Mac Mini starts at $499, and is an excellent solution to a Dell or HP. Sure it might not have extras, but the software alone in my opinion is worth $500.
Would you ever switch back? Hell No
Would you quit a job that wanted to make you switch back? I don’t have a job yet, but if Windows XP pissed me off enough I would consider it.
What OS did you use before OS X (non Apple OSs)? Windows XP Home, Windows 98SE, Windows 95
What is your profession; or area of study if a student? I’m a sophomore high school student.

How people question me about Mac OS X and think apple computers are still OS 9

Would you ever switch back?

just the fact that i can't find much mac games, and not to mention the fact that in that few mac games catagory, i can't find any of them in the nearby computer stores.

also, sometimes the programs crash and hang up just as well on my ibook, and it has "diffrent" problems. but those problems are 1/20 the problems that i have on my PC. sorry i didn't fill those required fields. :p

How often does it crash?

Used to have a problem with kernel panics but it appears that bad RAM was the problem. Generally, my system is quite well behaved. Sometimes i get the odd Finder crash or safari quitting out. 10.4.3 should clear up a lot of the little bugs. OS X is very picky about the RAM and also needs a lot of it.

How often do you feel compelled to reinstall the system?

Why do so many Windows people do this? I have friends that think it's great to format every 2 or 3 months ... WHY!? My Powerbook is going on 2 years old, I've only upgraded from Panther to Tiger and that was in July ... that was a complete reinstall.

How do your non-computer professional family members handle OS X?

Generally I try and keep them away from it because they aren't familiar with OS X. I just set up another User account and let them mess about with it when the need to but I still keep an eye on what they're doing.

Do you still keep a Windows machine around and why?

I sold it a few months ago. I'm completely Microsoft free apart from Office for Mac. Not that I hate Windows that much. It was just getting old, sluggish and boring. Both OS and computer :p

What annoys you the most?

The hinge on the screen is far too tight and makes a god awful crack when I move it. It's especially bad after the computer has been on for a while and is hot. I really should get it fixed because It's just waiting to break big time. I know this happened a lot with the older Titanium 'books but I haven't heard many other cases of this with the Aluminum ones.

I find my Powerbook a little slow at times. I usually have 8 or 9 apps going at a time and if you have a lot of tabs opened in Safari, there is always a big performance hit. I considered going to an iMac but I need the portability. If we see significant Powerbook updates next week I just might upgrade and stick with PPC until the creases get ironed out of the Intel Mac laptops.

Would you ever switch back?

I doubt it.

Would you quit a job that wanted to make you switch back?

Thankfully not in the position but it wouldn't be a problem really. Windows Laptops are fairly cheap and easy to come across. I'd always have a Mac as the main machine though.

What OS did you use before OS X (non Apple OS) ?

Well I started off learning to use a computer on OS 9 (I think, It was a massive big thing, beige, with a huge monitor. It had the apple gong when it started up) Didn't have that machine for very long. I didn't even know the difference between Apple/Windows, computers were computers. After that I had Windows 98, 2000(wow that was bad), and XP Pro.

What is your profession?

None of your business. :p

OS rerely crashes, but applications such as DVD player, iPhoto, Safary sometimes do.

How often do you feel compelled to reinstall the system?
I had to reinstall Tiger when 10.4.2 update killed my Linksys wireless card support. If Tiger had a restore system like Windows I wouldn't had to waste 2 hours of my time.

How do your non-computer professional family members handle OS X?
Mostly they like it, but noone sees it as superior to Windows XP. My girlfriend thinks the interface is way cute, but my brother was surprised that I can't play Divix and WMA10 movies.

Do you still keep a Windows machine around and why?
My father has a Pentium II 350Mhz machine which was my first kick - ass machine from 6 years ago. Still good for web browsing, documents and classic games.

What annoys you the most?
There is no Add/Remove system like Windows has - you have to search for each application and then guess whether it's ok to just trash the folder. Finder is inconsistent and really poor compared to Windows Explorer. Can't Cut all files and paste them somewhere, applications won't cut and paste - you have to copy. No real game support built into Mac OS making it not sutable for 100% PC replacement.

Would you ever switch back?
It crossed my mind multiple time, if .3 update won't address my main gripes - I will switch back.

Would you quit a job that wanted to make you switch back?
Hell no - it's just an OS, it's a tool, it's like saying would you quit if company switches from Microsoft Word to Open Office.

What OS did you use before OS X (non Apple OSs) ?
All Microsoft Platforms, Linux and Solaris.

What is your profession; or area of study if a student?
Software Engineer.

How often does it crash?
Never had a kernel panic or system crash with OS 9.2.2 through OS 10.4.2

How often do you feel compelled to reinstall the system?
Never. (With Windows, had to do it every 6 months or so because it junked up the system and because of DLL hell).

How do your non-computer professional family members handle OS X?
They figure it out pretty easily. They are in a habit of closing an app by hitting the "close" button on a Window.

Do you still keep a Windows machine around and why?
Nope. No need for one.

What annoys you the most?
Quicken is only personal financial software. Some websites don't show up correctly in Safari, but that is not a Mac thing; its an IE thing.

Would you ever switch back?
Never.

Would you quit a job that wanted to make you switch back?
I don't understand this question. How could a job make me change my personal computer?? I use a Windows computer at work.

What OS did you use before OS X (non Apple OSs) ?
Windows

How often does it crash?
Once since I've had it. Kernel Panic. No data loss, just had to restart. I think it was my fault though, I had 14 programs running, then I tried to convert a mpeg to avi while I was playing the mpeg (I forgot to close WMP).

How often do you feel compelled to reinstall the system?
Never. I only have once because I deleted quite a few important programs by accident so I just wanted a fresh start. :D

How do your non-computer professional family members handle OS X?
Excellent. My mom loves it. She is soon to be the proud owner of an iMac G5.

Do you still keep a Windows machine around and why?
You bet. I only have a Mac because it's better for work and I needed a laptop. My Windows machine sits at home and I love it, I just hate all the BS that goes along with maintaining the OS.

What annoys you the most?
Won't print correctly over the network, or at all with some printers at work.

Would you ever switch back?
I wouldn't say I've entirely switched over in the first place, but no, I will never take any steps back from this point.

Would you quit a job that wanted to make you switch back?
Depends on what they were paying me and what other jobs were available to me at the time.

What OS did you use before OS X (non Apple OSs) ?
SuSE 9.1 and XP.

What is your profession; or area of study if a student?
Advertising Manager and part-time Sales Rep for the family business. My father is a builder and so I handle the project advertising and also a few sales (paperwork, closings, etc). As far as study, I am working toward a few certifications (CompTIA). I own a small computer repair shop (small meaning smaaaallllll... :D) just to make a little cash on the side. (PC repair only, I'm not familiar enough with Mac's to feel comfortable working on others' machines.)

How often does it crash?

My iBook has never crashed! iMac crashed one time (Kernal Panic) but I think it was due to the first time hooking up my external firewire drive. Now if we are talking specific programs iMovie use to crash on me a lot before Tiger came out. It was annoying. iPhoto crashed maybe 2 times on me. Safari use to crash on and off back in the 10.3.7 - 10.3.9 days. But if we are talking about OS crashing as a whole, only one time {{knock on wood}}

How often do you feel compelled to reinstall the system?

Not often at all. Both Macs run smoothly w/o issues.

How do your non-computer professional family members handle OS X?

Well most of them don't even want to try it. But my father is curious because he is sick of spyware, virus, trojans, etc... with his Windows PC. Although he originally started out programming for Apple back in 1982 he went over to Windows as the times changed. But I keep telling him that Mac OS X will be a lot more smoother but he tends to stick with what he now knows, which is XP

Do you still keep a Windows machine around and why?

No. Sometimes I wish I did have my DELL as a back up just in case but no. No Windows boxes in the house at this time.

What annoys you the most?

Well the price tag of a Mac for one (iBook/PB, iMac/PM). How safari is not compatible with certain pages. The lack of support for Macs in the computer world. That's about it i think...

Would you ever switch back?

No. UNLESS something drastic happens in the computer world that makes a Mac useless.

Would you quit a job that wanted to make you switch back?

Nah.

How often does it crash?
Once in the 10 months since I switched. I was having logic board problems at the time (which has since been replaced under warranty).

How often do you feel compelled to reinstall the system?
Never yet.

How do your non-computer professional family members handle OS X?
My brother (who is not techy at all) switched solely becasue I did and he thought it would be easier for me to assist with all the problems he expected to have regardless of what his new machine. He never calls with problems; only sometimes asking how to things he's never done before. Which is a good thing - I'd much rather do that than clean off spyware).

Do you still keep a Windows machine around and why?
yes, because it still works. I split my time between my place and my girlfriends. I put the imac and the high speed internet at her place (b/c that's where I am more) and left the windows pc at my apt. with dial up for when I'm there...

What annoys you the most?
I run into problems with OSX and my HP 7550 printer.

Would you ever switch back?
sure, if something else is better down the road I guess.

Would you quit a job that wanted to make you switch back?
hehheh...no - I've never had a job that used macs. Currently I have a thinkpad T41 for work. Nice machine. I kind of like usng a different OS for work vs play.

Windows
