I am just messing with you… If you are in your 20s then fair play, I am ancient to you. Lol…

I am lucky, I don’t have to keep dry cabinets for my gear, I am able to maintain humidity without one - thankfully - my wife would kill me if I started buying those.

The Canon Rebels were a turning point for me. The advent of the 350d was the first time I was interested in doing photography it signalled an accessibility to the hobby that I hadn’t previously thought I could. I didn’t dip my toe in the water until the 1100d came about in 2009-ish. It got increasingly expensive very quickly after that.

If you haven’t used any of your equipment since 2018, then yes you should liquidate it and consolidate onto something you will use.

I'm middle age by now ;) I still have a mentality of a teenager though!

The most I could get for is ~20% of its value... I was so dumb to buy 128GB CF cards for ~$100 thinking it a bargain back in 2015... now no one's gonna buy that unless it's ~$20 o_O

Lol... unlikely as everyone's upgrading to EOS RF mount.

Even when the value goes up in the US its the domestic market I have to work with.

My youth was wasted by bird photography. All the girls were older than my mom & dad... no chicks for me. :(

If you have pro bodies from 2003-2015 they all used CF cards as the fastest card slot. SDXC's throughput was lower than 160MB/s for these bodies. I wish I never bought the 64GB & 12GB CF cards and just stuck to the 32GB I had previously.

For me sensor size, low light focus performance and system were the the things that made me buy my last camera. Nikon D850. I am really pleased with it - most often used with a 105mm macro and ring flash.

I’m always happy to buy good unwanted CF cards in high capacity!

My two main cameras are CF.

Well, they take SD also, but I’m also not going to use those awful things if I can avoid it.

there are a lot of people who don't want to move to mirrorless for various reasons. you might be surprised at some of the used prices/values.

Have you priced your gear at keh.com or mpb.com? It wouldn’t hurt to try, especially if you don’t plan on using it again. Something is better than nothing. You might be surprised.

low ball offers, hun. ;)

I live in a country where in 85% of all adults have a wealth of $10k or less.

those who can afford these devices do so through financing of a bank or credit card.

I got this guy making offers for a 500/4 IS Series 1 for $5k and yet after a decade he has yet to raise the funds.

Pandemic does not help any for a multitude of people.

I spoke to the product managers of Sony, Canon and Nikon and they've had little luck selling brand new pricey gear to any new customers. Only customers who buy are people I know and people I know freight forward from Hong Kong where sales tax and VAT aint a thing.

Thank you for the suggestion though.

I'd have to freight it from outside the US to the US. Freight + insurance may double the cost.

Thank you for the suggestion though. I know they're very good places to liquidate babied gear.

A word of warning.

Do not go overboard with gear acquisition syndrome.

Having a partner or a spouse to regulate it is a blessing and not a curse! :)

Given what I know now I wish someone stopped me in 2008 or 2012 with the
So when I move to RF mount I'd buy these

I decided to get into photography seriously a few years ago and I’m so glad I did as it really got me through the last couple of years of lockdowns etc. Not only in taking photos but in the steep learning curve involved to do it (relatively) well. As a designer it also suits me better to have control over a whole page/spread - it’s amazing to leave a gap in a story and then go out and shoot the image you need yourself. Exactly as you want.

Bar the obvious manual control where you are making the decisions I would also mention:

1. Quality, variety and character of lenses.
2. Ergonomics - do you have big hands, like the feel/weight and position of the buttons?
3. Colour science - do you prefer the way that certain cameras reproduce skin tones etc.

Personally I fell in love with the Nikon mirrorless Z cameras. Just added a Z9 and the ability to shoot 20 frames per second in RAW just opens up the possibility of shots that would have been practically impossible (or very lucky) before. Never mind 120 fps a second in JPEG or 8K video. This camera has persuaded a whole bunch of Nikon DSLR holdouts to jump in - the amount of staggering images I’ve seen from especially bird photographers in the last few weeks on FB groups has been insane. It’s amazing what the real hard core pros are doing with this tech in sports too.

Nationwide film was available everywhere as well as cassette tapes in those days. These days no because everyone uses phones.

And of course a decade of dedicated digital cameras were there who wiped the floor with the film offerings.

Important features for me:
- a "flippy" back display (like those on modern Canon mirrorless)
- good menu system (Canon dominates on this)
- touchscreen with touch-to-shoot option (I use this about 95% of the time).

On any future purchase:
- non-mechanical shutter (perhaps the global shutter that I reckon will appear first on the Canon R1 either late this year or next year).

Prediction:
Just as almost no new DSLR's are being released "with mirrors"...
... within 10 years almost no new interchangeable-lens cameras will still retain mechanical shutters. It will be "all digital, all the way".

Basically we are talking bells and whistles.

I covered the ones I actually use regularly with my new Lumix here:

I doubt that any of those are exclusive to the Lumix or Leica lines.

To those I would add pinpoint focusing and a machine gun feature. This camera works at 10 or 6 FPS. Some such as the excellent Sony lines are noticeably quicker. Strangely I have found the shutter response is fast enough, that a single frame approach often works better for me. Some recent flag waving shots I discarded entire runs of 15 or 20 frames, whereas I was able to capture exactly what I wanted with the single frame approach.

A camera has got to feel good in the hand and give me easy access to aperture, ISO, shutter speed functions while having it up to my eye. I also like having access to lock exposure and a level without sorting through menus. I guess I'm a curmudgeon because I don't much care for looking at a computer screen/EVR and prefer a LVF. I look at computer screens all day for my job and whatnot; I don't care for one for my photography.

Currently I use a Nikon D850 with 35 and 50mm primes. I think the camera gets pretty close to achieving the above. Nice big files that allow a lot of leeway in pushing shadows or getting highlights back. I also like that it can use Nikon lenses back to the 50s (?) without an adapter.

I have no qualms about smartphone photography, though. I think that has opened up a lot of doors to people who couldn't otherwise afford a camera. As they say, the best camera is the one you have on you, and a smartphone fits that bill.

In all honesty, most of the time concentration on the gear is a bit overrated. I was just looking at some photos I took on a 4MP Cybershot back in 2005 and love 'em. The limitation most of the time is my eye. iI get that there are some good reasons for more modern tech though especially in the fields where good AF is needed. I have the 850 because I want the ability to print big if needed.

There are several kinds of atractions :)

Cameras: I am not attracted to any features other than what the camera incorporates, and most include all the settings and modes I will ever need. In fact, there are some modes that I seldom use. A camera is just a tool.

Landscape: I am attracted to high ground (mountains and such) along low ground or valleys, forested areas, streams and lakes, plus wildlife here and there.

When I was young and "shopping around": I was always attracted to slim and well-proportioned legs and face (pretty face, of course). Now that I am old and being married to the lady I have loved for a long time, I am attracted to the "entire package", features and all. Through those years I learned that the features I was attracted to-weren't as meaningful to me as her.

I started back into photography about 3 to 4 years ago after taking a 4 or 5 year hiatus. I was using a Nikon D80 camera, but since I didn't have much glass I switched over to the Sony Alpha cameras. Trying to shorten this post up so I just say I bought the Sony A7R III and the Sony A9 (It was on sale during the holidays that it came out). My intention was to sell the A7R III as I am more into BIF (Birds-in-Flight) photography, but the A7RIII has a higher resolution. The Sony A1 came out a year or so ago and I was hemming & hawing about it, but I finally pressed the button a purchased one. To offset the cost a little I sold my A7R III and some lenses to knock the price down to about $4500.00. I was going to sell my Sony A9, but I really like that camera and gotten attached to it. I plan on keeping the Sony A1 around for a long time as that is really the best of both worlds, by that I mean a high resolution camera and the speed to go with it. I follow Mark Smith videos on YouTube when it comes to setting up the camera for shooting wildlife (or action shots) as I really like his work and he proves it's the person behind the camera not the camera itself that determines the image quality. I am completely shocked on many photos one can take in a short period time with the A1. I think I will be switching over to jpg for shots that I just want to capture action? I still have to test that out. I like Sony Alpha Cameras as I ave small to medium size hands, but I don't think it would be well suited for a person with big hands though the features might outweigh that negative. ?

When you bought your camera what features most attracted you? I can say for me the ability to instantly share to social media is NOT an attractive or necessary feature. For my Powershot I like the HDMI port which I use sometimes, the powerful zoom feature, the ability to shoot in HD,FHD, OR 4K and not just lame poor quality 640x480 which my previous camera shot at. Also the many many features and shooting modes my Powershot has is attractive. Most these days think that instantly sharing media to social media is a deal breaker and why they have rejected stand alone cameras. I sometimes share to social media but it does not have to be instant. What about you? I like features and find my Powershot superior to my iPhone 12 for shooting.
A decade or so ago Samsung did a market survey on smartphone buyers.

Turns out that being able to take photos/videos then sharing it on the Internet was the #1 reason they upgrade that often.

I used to buy EOS EF bodies and lenses every 6 months because I suffered Gear Aqusition Syndrome (GAS) upon reflection I would be better off just maintaining three f/2.8L zooms and one 5D body every decade.

Anything more and it is excessive.
