Siren Head Resurrection

If your into the SCP universe this one might also just be for you. While Siren Head is not part of SCP, never the less is on the same lines of being bizarre, scary & unexplainable as are many cryptid's.

Siren Head Resurrection is a solo, indie, fan made game. The project started only as a short teaser and received a great positive feedback from the community. The game was in development for 8 months and was designed with replayability in mind.

Looks interesting

More of the same, equally very different...

Siren Head Southpoint Not as expansive or in depth as Siren Head Resurrection with it's open world approach, never the less a good Siren Head game you can get into and enjoy it's dark atmosphere.

Siren Head Stranded Just starting this one, has some interesting game mechanics and definitely has the look & feel of Siren Head.

Siren Head Retribution Yet to play, however comes well recomended.

All are best gone into blind to get the best experience  The dev's sites (linked) give all the info you really need, well baring Siren Head Resurrection as that one has some tricky puzzles & secret areas to find...

SCP-087 The one that kicked it all off. While a very simple premise SCP-087 taps into something primordial that slowly brings on a feeling of dread. There have been many iterations of SCP-087 over the years with some working better than others. They vary from being time killers to full on games all with the same base theme. SCP 087-B is a good example and remains to be genuinely frightening for some players.
There are many more...:)

SCP Containment Breach Still one of the best free horror experiences that betters some paid titles with a strong replay value. Simple game mechanics that just work, and add to the tension as you attempt to evade the SCP's and escape the facility. Another that's been remade & remastered numerous times, including multiplayer over the years and for good reason :)
This was and still is one of the most iconic free horror games that you can play. Still to this day the gold standard how to make a good Creepypasta horror game. A terrifying experience, and it's legacy lives on in the modding community

What's most impressive is all these games are free with the option for donations in some cases. Same as any game it takes time & effort to deliver a polished product. The differnce here is the dev's are driven by passion not profit with the latter ever more becoming the norm. So why not check them out and if you like & enjoy drop the dev's a cup of coffee or a beer :)

Are there monsters there?

Are there monsters there?
Naturally as these are all horror themed games. Much varies from game to game, as ever the fear of the unknown is the greatest fear. If you dont try you will never know? Siren Head Resurrection would be a good start as it's more exploration orientated. SCP-087 may bore you or SCP-087-B and it's derivatives may send you into a loop of fever dreams being deeply disturbing with both leaving much to the players imagination.

Go with Siren Head Resurrection, you'll explore & discover; multiple endings, collectables, secrets areas and learn to deal with the eponymous Siren Head (short film)... Siren Head Southpoint is also very good, and possibly scarier. Last play the Wendigo got me in a heartbeat, surprises abound.

All are free, so all that's stopping you is well you... Some are experiences, some are fully fledged games with complex mechanics. Nothing ventured, nothing gained :)

Doom 3, this is how it looks & plays in 2024
and how it could play...
Yeah, 20 years on and still kicking ass. New game engine, hand crafted graphic's, lore accurate, this is Doom 3... If you haven't you must and if you need you know what to do.

Looks good. I recently tried D3 and I must be getting old, hell I am old. :) I'm no longer really into horror, and dark, claustrophobic spaces, although I considered a Dead Space replay and then almost immediately got distracted by another title, not horror, something like Starfield which I ended up unhappy with. I'm sure if I am equipped with a pulse rifle, I could easily go into an Aliens environment, just don't ask me to sneak around with nothin but a lame flame thrower. :p

Always been into horror & Sci-Fi films & games, that's never going away and I'm just ten years behind you :) Doom 3 on the dhewm3 game engine & Hell Barron's stunning graphics package betters many modern titles  You should just jump in and go with the flow 👍 When I play Doom 3 set up like this, I'm there... I even have it running natively on the M1 MacBook Pro as once your in, your in...

Dead Space, now we're talking :) Starfield waste of pennies, a worse version of Fallout 4 in space. Far better off playing No Mans Sky and creating your own adventure.

Come on, he just want's to be friends.
ALIEN #1.jpg

but he might tear you a new on in the process...LOL.

Alien Isolation, textures modded to 1440p, extended graphics options and far more interesting & dangerous AI. One if not the best horror/Sci-Fi games you can ever play. Set up like this, the Alien is like the 1979 film and you best be aware of that. You'll never know when or where, but when you do...

The Alien is not so closely tethered to the player and is more likely to explore and hunt. I got a Dallas  Those that have watched the film will get this. Nearly fell out the chair, now that's horror at it's finest  Medical is somewhat scripted and I've never played a game with such tension, possibly even beats out Outlast and that's a shocker...

Played out both Myst & Riven a long time back, nor adverse to having another go in 2024 :)

This Riven has some very nice tweaks, homages to the original, and some new tools/mechanics that I'm really enjoying. And it looks like a million dollars.

@Queen6 I found the first mission of Nier Automata somewhat difficult, but eventually adjusted. I believe this type of gameplay is called 'bullethell' and it's a fair description. I actually did make it through one leg of the game and 'completed' the game with one character. For the second log, you are supposed to complete the game a second time as the first character's companion. While that is a novel storytelling technique, it didn't really work for me and I ended up abandoning the game early on in the second phase.

In our latest dispatch from London...

Yes, Fallout London is here and it's actually pretty good. The atmosphere is top notch, but it feels kind of rushed with limited dialog options and some NPCs not even responding to conversation attempts - until they become valid quest givers anyway. What quests are there are solid, though generally with limited branching. Some fairly major bugs are present, though not game breaking ones (not for me yet, anyway.) The mod could definitely use more fleshing out.

Taking a break from 'Legend of Heroes: Trails Through Daybreak' and restarted 'Cyberpunk 2077' on Steam Deck which I played about a year ago when Phantom Liberty came out. (I did play on release but not completely)

More into S.T.A.L.K.E.R. than the Fallout universe, although I do have Fallout 3 & New Vegas. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. have all the games and played a good number of the mods (a lot :))

Radiophobia 3 comes well recomend for those who are seasoned Stalkers, want more of a challenge, expanded storylines with a twist. R3 is really well done with good if not deadly FPS action and horror done well

I like to play with the vanilla NPC's as I've been playing S.T.A.L.K.E.R. since the get go. Even then they have been completely reworked and updated. The new HD models are done really well, but I just like the look of the OG characters as we've played a turn or two over the years...LOL.

Catch you in the Zone...

It would be great if they released Riven for iPad, just like they did for Myst. Although who am I kidding, I would wait until I have an M2 or M4 Mac to play them, because after watching comparisons of the latest Myst version, it looks much better on the Mac, and makes my iPad Pro reach melting temperatures.

I’d love to play some of this Siren Head games on my iPad Pro, but I guess this indie projects are only available if you have a Windows PC.

IDK, majority of what I have is Windows with the odd outliers being macOS. I guess if it's not on the Apple Store there's no option or maybe sideloading is possible if a game exits. itch.io & gamejolt.com would be a start.

Most are short & sweet, but that's fine as sometimes that's all I want to play. That and I prefer to support actual dev's than faceless investment companies who are pushing the industry into the gutter due to their sheer greed...

There's a new Doom out, "Legacy of Rust". I bought Doom II from Steam years ago and it had a free upgrade to the new one, and the WAD seems to work in GZDoom (as long as it's up to date: I had an earlier version to start with and the first level wasn't able to be completed). The hardest part was looking up how to get the Mac version of Steam to let me download the flagged-as-Windows WAD file!

As for the game itself, I'm only one level into it but yikes, there's a new enemy type and there's something terrifying about it.

Lately, many indie games like the ones @Queen6 has been showing us, are catching my attention. Small & sweet games that can be found on Steam or other places, even for free. But they are always for Windows.

So, given that I am going to keep being a Mac user, and thanks the power of Apple Silicon, I’m considering that an M4 or M4 Pro should be enough to run all this games using Whiskey. What do you think? Should I wait until the M5 to see if the GPU gets an important boost? Or an M4 should be enough?

I doubt there's an easy answer as it would very much depend on the game engine and how the game is put together. I think the only solution is to give them a go. itc.io has some games for macOS, however the number is significantly reduced compared to Windows.

Just played DEPPART Prototype on a GTX1070, 100FPS no problem so might present no issue to an M3/M4 depending Whiskey's overhead. Not been in the mood for a lengthier game of recent and some of these short indie games are gems :)

P.T. - on Windows. P.T. was a free teaser on PS4 only for the ill fated Silent Hills. It has an eerie subtle playstyle, more than you would think. What the teaser does is tap into your primordial senses. I dont find it frightening, however it's unnerving.

Due to Hideo Kohima's very public and unpleasant split with Konami the company buried P.T. :( Over the years fans have made faithful reproductions of P.T. to varying levels with P.T. Emulation 1.4 & Unreal P.T. 1.0.7 being the better.

A shame Silent Hills was never produced as Kohima is a master of horror with Guillermo del Toro & Norman Reedus also involved. Instead we got Death Stranding... Those that want to experience P.T. should look to Visage as it has a similar atmosphere and a full game.

vidage-fi1.jpg

Visage is psychological horror done right, nor for the feint of heart... A warning from the dev's nor are they fooling about.

"IMPORTANT NOTE: The game focuses on exploration and builds tension slowly to create a deeper and more meaningful experience. Its story is unveiled through surreal imaging and subtle environment details. Be mindful that it is a difficult game in unconventional ways."

Visage is far more frightening than P.T. and many other titles. I believe the dev team worked with psychologists to ensure they could tap into our subconscious mind and trigger the players fear responses. Many simply cant play the game. I bought Visage very early in development and sat it out until completion. Visage by design is deeply immersive, tests your ability to endure fear, pressure & mental strain...

If wanting a different approach to horror Red Barrels Outlast (2013) & Outlast: Whistleblower (2014) still does the trick with a far higher gore & shock value...

Thx to modern HW and the power of the game engine it's also possible to increase Outlast's graphic fidelity via it's config files and it runs on modern Mac's :) Outlast 2 yet to finish, graphically improved and certainly designed to scare. Some say it's better, some say worse. Time will tell, those missing the original chase sequences they can be restored via mod.
