So now it’s the RX 580, with my GT 120 safely in a drawer in case it all goes nipple skyward.
Same here. This seems to be the winning combo that everyone is going for. :D
Sapphire RX 580 being the best card for the cMP right now and the GT 120 the easiest to swap in when and if you need EFI.

Hopefully you get a good 7950. Quite a few XFX 7xxx that has highly customised PCB can't work on cMP.

Also, the others already told you that the latest 138.0.0.0.0 firmware will unlock the 5GT/s for your 7950.

Anyway, the Sapphire PULSE RX580 8GB is my choice.

Thankfully, I lucked out and did... I got an XFX Radeon 7950 Core Edition (single fan) (FX-795A-TNFC). Apparently it's supposed to be a 7950 reference card, albeit w/o the dual rom switch. I flashed it with the netkas described procedure, and it went w/o a hitch. And as you and @tsialex pointed out, with the 130.0.0.0.0 bootrom, it does runs at 5.0GT/s w/o needing the R17 resistor mod. So far, it's running w/o any glitches. If anyone needs details on flashing procedure, let me know... but I pretty much followed the standard procedure quite closely.

Happy days!

Does the Sapphire 7950 support metal? 1,2?

Yes it does GPUFamily 1 on High Sierra and GPUFamily 2 while running Mojave Beta
