Spotlight is more powerful than most people think. It can also convert measurements (miles to kms, etc.) and currencies, find flight info, etc.

Funny that while all suggestions work, all it really does is make me realize having the Dashboard as overlay with calculator, notes and such for quick access was simply better, for me anyway
Agreed, but we all know that desktops systems must be made to look and act like toddler-friendly mobile devices.

Dumbing down of features that worked fine. There really is no need for them to remove the calculator widget, or widgets in general, but we want our desktop to become an iPad, right?

The Spotlight method works, but it's again a dumbed down version. The calculator app is fine and has become my preference but it's again a complication of what used to be simpler. It's not that it cannot be replaced, it's that it does not need to be replaced.

huh... my macs look like computers, work like computers... and are both working really well in big sur.

there should be a 'whiner' foum on macrumors, so people can do their thing there, and, then, on a forum like this, we could discuss the OS; what works, what doesn't, what we need help with, what we've discovered, etc.

so it goes

Your point is fair, but some of us do NOT like the fact that features that we've used for a decade or more are deprecated because they can't be duplicated on iOS.

"because they can't be duplicated on iOS" is based on what facts? or did you mean to say "are, in my opinion, deprecated because they can't be duplicated on iOS"...

Well, I'd like to submit that loosing the calculator widget in the notification centre does not work for me. I would also submit that having the calculator widget in the notification centre does not work as well for me as when we used to have a whole dashboard filled with useful non -notification related widgets.
The conclusion that they are trying to stuff too much in a tight space because it otherwise won't fit in the restricted space iOS provides is still fair. In fact, screen real estate is the number one reason I don't do much of anything productivity related on any iOS device and the biggest thing that sets macos apart from iOS, I do feel the functionality of the os should reflect that major difference.
Same thing with the whole full screen, black out half your screen real estate bs (dual monitor setup).
The functionality of macos suffers from IOS related design decisions, to me, it's a fair point

it's a fair opinion, and you're more than entitled to it. also (full disclosure), i run both my macs with "more space" selected in system prefs>displays. either way, apple does what it does, and we adapt... or don't.

Apple sometimes does things that tick me off as well. For example have you tried using AirPods in Monterey? There are bugs but Apple is only concerned about iOS users.

I've used both AirPods Pros and AirPods Max with Monterrey on two Macs without any issues. What issues are you having?

As for the missing calculator widget, another workaround is to just open the calculator app and then move it to a new desktop. Then you can just wipe left/right to get to it and it will be the active window so you can just start typing.

Try watching a movie with them. The audio cuts in and out but it does not always happen so you need to watch a movie in Monterey with the AirPods. I have the AirPods 2 not pro or max.

I have. No issues. Maybe it's a specific app/site you're using to watch movies in that I'm not? I've watched movies in QuickTime, VLC, and YouTube or Amazon Prime (using Google Chrome).

I have tried the apple TV app, the DVD app, and the podcast app and all the same problem. Perhaps the AirPods Max and pro have no issues its just the normal AirPods that do.

But I have no issues whatsoever on my iPhone, iPad, or appleTV.

Following the advice on the above website reduces the problem but does not eliminate it.

Well, those are all apps I don't normally use, so maybe that's the difference. Very strange, though. You wouldn't think the AirPods (regardless of the model) would care what app the audio was coming from.

Try those apps and report back.

I wouldn't hold my breath. It's been over a year since they removed it and adding it seems trivial. I just wonder what's the thinking behind the move to take it out other than to piss users off
I bet it’s something stupid like a code conversion was needed for all of the widgets, and someone forgot to do the calculator widget because nobody was assigned the task.

My girlfriend finally updated to Monterrey yesterday on her Intel MacBook Pro 13” and this pissed her off. She ended up making a shortcut for it in the menu bar. I suggested spotlight but she seems to have an aversion to using certain features and that’s one of them. But I have an aversion to the useless Launchpad, so I can relate.

It’s clear that Apple is making changes to macOS to suit iOS and it’s not always good. It’s often bad.

Most of Apple software appears to not be deeply planned design anymore. They add or change things, don’t use unified API elements (similar controls with different biscuits), and seemingly consider usability beyond the first implementation. Then they’ll suddenly change it in another version, fixing some problems, and damaging that which otherwise worked fine.
