I opened up the iBook today. It ended in disaster. A component snapped off the logic board when i went to reassemble it. As much as I like this iBook, I have my limits, so I have decided to give up on it and save myself from further stress. Hate it when this happens with old computer stuff, when you go in to upgrade it, but you end up breaking it instead.

Oh ow... >~<

I thought I accidentally killed something related to the AirPort card in mine yesterday. Luckily the driver was just not loaded though. I'm sorry for your computer loss. What model of iBook?

What were you trying to upgrade ? I hear iBooks are hard to upgrade.

Thank you. It was a 500mhz Dual USB. I've had it for about 4 years.

I was trying to upgrade the optical drive. The CD-ROM drive it came with would randomly eject, often during boot, but at other times as well. Zapping the PRAM would make the problem go away for awhile, but it would always come back. The drive would sometimes still read discs, but many times it would not. I've been using an external LaCie CD-RW drive connected via FireWire as a replacement, but I was getting annoyed by the internal CD-ROM drive randomly ejecting and I also wanted to add DVD playback capabilities to the iBook, so I searched eBay and found an internal DVD-ROM/CD-RW combo drive meant for iBooks for $15. I also wanted to remove the old mechanical internal HDD as well as I had moved on to using an external SSD as my boot drive.

That's the model I upgraded too. What part broke off?

I’d put it on a flaming Chariot to Valhalla chanting "Today IS a good day to die!" (using Michael Dorn [Worf] as the voice actor of course). I think we’ve all broken our share of componentry over the years. It happens sometimes but fear not as singular components can fetch good money on ebay so your ibook could live on as a donor in another ibook.

That and you may walk away with enough money to fund another ibook.

:D

My childhood is flashing before my eyes. This was like my favorite game as a young teen for some reason.

It's sad, but the only thing I still use PowerPC for on a daily basis is white noise. I have a PB 12" with Tiger in my home office with logitech speakers, and have it sat in the corner playing white noise 24/7. Helps me concentrate and relax.

Spent 4 hours of my life testing 4 eight dimm sets of RAM for my Dual 2.7 G5. Out of all those 1GB DDR400 dimms only four worked.... What a waste of time. Haha

You may have to bake your board - the solder comes loose around those memory slots. Luckily, my Quad G5 has no issue.

The iBook lives! Reassembling was a total pain, but I did it. The upper case is cracked in one corner, and it doesn't sit evenly in another. The keyboard isn't flush with the case anymore either. Must have gotten my screws mixed up along the way or something. It does work though, and the new optical drive works too. This iBook is so quiet without the internal HDD, the fan hasn't even come on yet.

I never want to take apart another iBook.

Mine is quiet too. Setting it up now. I think I got all the screws in the right place but I came out with more screws than I started with it seems.

I think it's an unwritten law of laptop repair

What I do when taking stuff like this apart is draw a rough schematic of each layer I take apart, just enough to know where screw goes and then literally draw in the screw holes. Next I place each screw in the screw hole on the schematic.

One day I just started doing this, not sure how many other people do it. If you take your time and invest in decent enough schematics your set.

Ooooo... That's a good idea... I'll have to consider doing that in the future cuz yea... even when I organize using traditional means I end up with extra screws >.>
