I got it! No more https crashes! Man is it fast too (on sites that aren't TLS 1.3 enabled). Rendering is still surprisingly good for as old as it is. I'm going to give it another night of tests, then i'll upload it for testing. I want to make sure it doesn't require macports libs relinked, however i can't test that as all my installs have macports installed. In theory it *might* run on 10.2 and up if i did it right. Anyway, more screenshots for now.

SSL3 - TLS 1.2 supported.

Old Reddit still renders great too.

Today? Dont you mean every day? ;)
My dual G5 and mini G4 are my main machines, even though I have some newer Intel's. Those just aren't fun. I use my intel iMac for printing wirelessly, and its other use is as a "TV" using PlutoTV app. Otherwise it sits powered off 95% of the time.

My dual G5 is used for development and daily browsing, YouTube, Twitch, email, irc etc. The mini G4, pretty much the same. If the dual is compiling stuff I let it be and use the mini for the above. The PowerBook sits in the living room as my couch computer, which also handles the above, and the keyboard is soooo much nicer than my MacBook's. I really only use my Intel Macs for devel/building arctic fox, spiderweb and interweb for that platform. Otherwise I always choose one of the ppc Macs first.

Cheers
Well it’s been a while, but my Dual Mac G5 will get MacBuntu remix loaded as it’s permanent Linux distro. I’ve tried installing everything from Fienix 5.1 to Debian 9 thru 11 with no success. The only issue I’m having right now is the wireless Wi-Fi is not working. I actually screwed things up so bad that I had to erase the HD and reinstall a clean copy. Yes I have an Ethernet cable going to it but the whole point of loading a Linux distro on this machine was to make it better than just running OS X.
During my research I found that RFKILL had a soft block on the WiFi card, I removed it but the “wireless device was not ready”.

What needs to be done to make it ready? It’ an AirPort Extreme Broadcom 43XX.
b43-firmware is the latest version. Linux-firmware is installed. It doesn’t need the b43-legacy driver.

To be clear, none of the linux distro’s have been successful in using the WiFi card. I have been to Ubuntu help, linuxquestions.org, MacRumors etc looking for the ultimate solution but have only succeeded in making things an unrecoverable mess.

Point me to the answer, tell me your solution, whatever, I’d appreciate it.

Why copying? M.b. better just clone drive (+ extend partition)?
It's the same thing either way. I'm not copying/cloning a system. It's all data so it's going to take the same amount of time. Opening Carbon Copy Cloner to clone is just an extra step beyond drag and drop.

I recently found a spare SATA SSD, and installed it into my 17" iMac G5. Compared to the major speed gains of SSDs in G3s, this upgrade isn't quite as impressive... but surely anything to reduce the heat in a G5 is a good thing.

In my case I really can tell the difference between the original Maxtor spinning drive and the SSD that's now inside my iMac G5 iSight, the startup times, opening applications and the noise it's really pleasant to use with that upgrade.

I don't know because the fisrt generations of iMac G5 had a slow bus that maybe could be a bottleneck on the performance, so much that I can remember that video from Hrutkay Mods using a very good SSD from OWC.

But yes, almost every computer that I used an SSD have some kind of sensible improvement.

Guys I got an iBook from 2004. Last time when I was using it, 10 years ago, it was working flawlessly. As I know during this 10 years another person tried to reinstall operating system. Now I’ve got this laptop back and Panther installation disc doesn’t seem to see HDD. But I definitely hear it’s working and it’s not clicking with heads or anything else.

Maybe I can do something with a console to check the drive without disassembling the unit?

Since OS X doesn’t seem to detect the HDD you can check if e.g. Linux does (but I don’t think chances of that happening are particularly good). Failing that, I’m afraid you’ll have to open the machine to check what’s really going on.
BTW, I think that iBook can be made to run OS 9.2.2 with graphics acceleration for games ‘n’ stuff.

Exactly why I bothered with 2004 one… I already have 2005 version, but it’s not good for OS9, that’s why I took older one from my friend.

After I solve HDD issue I’ll be back with os9

Everything seems to be okay inside but I reconnected the hard drive and now it’s working.

Looks in really nice condition....👍
Actually it looks good at a first glance only. I found it thrown away in Dansk Design School (in Denmark). I guess all companies, before the throw away computers, need to remove the hard drive, so there were no screws left, some marks on the case and there were no metal shielding under the keyboard. Everything is lost. But despite this it still looks solid because of the clips that keep in whole.

So I took this laptop to experiment with, but back then I was not Apple fan and I was not a fan of retro stuff. So after a few approaches I gave this laptop to my friend and he kept it for 10 years or so.

There were some powerbooks, but they were too much to repair because someone tried to open its metal case with a crowbar, i think, and you just imagine the state of the case there…

I’ve got ftp in my router, no computer has issues with it, but this iBook has extremely low speed on download. No ideas why. Upload speed is high.

I *finally* found the DVD Decoder Card for my 500MHz 12-inch Wallstreet. Naturally, I had to watch the best movie ever made with my little friend Terry (official protector of the SIM card ejection tool).

I thought you'd appreciate this overlap of trivia involving the Terminator and Macs:

Apple engineers would also change the startup sounds used on prototype Macs sent out for third-party testing. I worked on Macs that played "Ding-dong, the witch is dead" and whistle "If I only had a brain" from the Wizard of Oz. Another Mac, the Quadra 840AV I believe, was set to play the drum intro from the movie "The Terminator" when starting up.

:D
