Not really done 'something' with my G4 PB today, but started it up to check battery level.
I was VERY surprised....last charged about 11 weeks ago, with 97% charge still....o_O
I expected it to be at about 25%.

Decided to try out creating a domain with Virtual PC 7 on the G5. Works well. Next ill try MS Exchange with it so I can send emails to other VMs running. Windows 98 is running in the background as well just for fun.

Anyone know of a Linux that is fairly modern and work with Virtual PC 7?

I trust his reports that he made about 6 months ago regarding Linux on VPC 7

I personally don't try because the software selection maybe requiring SSE(and up) emulation that VPC lacks (but in Windows 9x 2K & XP) that wasn't a requirement that will break most softwares. So be aware.

So here’s a little more to that passive cooling mod on the A1139 17-inch PowerBook G4 (the DLSD model).

Nice work! Thank you for writing this up and sharing it. Do you think it could go in its own thread? I've tried to collect some similar info for the 12in powebook here:

Perhaps it could, but the general methodology applies across both PowerPC and Early Intel Macs (as I’ve done this with an A1138, A1139, and A1261), so I’m not sure where such a thread might go. In some ways, efforts to improve passive cooling seems most relevant to the systems which get particularly hot — G5s and multi-core Intel Macs especially, but also Macs whose internal cooling channel designs were never robust to begin with.

The notorious 1710av. Mine is somewhat faulty as the internal calibration has not worked since I picked it up new. The driver board works well enough to get decent colors and such, it just gets really dim when the AV extension is loaded / working, and it tries to self-calibrate.

Thing has been sitting in a closet for about 10 years. First boot with it connected I didn't think it was working at all, but I guess it doesn't power on until POST is finished (memory count and such). Hooked up to my 840av in this shot, Working on undoing some settings changes as when I installed the AppleVision software the self-calibration caused the display to become really dim!

I removed the extension (Fine with it being locked in 640x480) but now trying to undo the calibration profile so it will go back to being brighter.

Listening to MP3 files sound amazing on this 1710av display!!

(Forgot to add) Apparently I need to go through my closets more!

Found (and apparently forgot) I had a mint condition Apple Keyboard II, something that will become my primary keyboard for my B&W G3 Tower! This keyboard and my older Standard keyboard with orange switches are my favorite Apple keyboards ever!

It’s a glorious keyboard (though I miss not having function keys).

Also, I often forget how the B&W G3 was that singular oddball of a New World Mac with an ADB port.

This afternoon I've been enjoying a couple of DVB-T SDTV recordings copied over from my PVR to a USB HDD which was then connected to an iBook G4.

Playing back MPEG2 broadcasts is well within the capabilities of a 1.42 Ghz PPC CPU and usually I'd enlist VLC for this job but I prefer mView: @Dronecatcher's optimised version of MPlayer. It has a much lower system overhead, is more compatible with my muxed MKVs and its keyboard controls make skipping through the commercial breaks on recordings that I haven't gotten round to trimming and editing a much easier affair than with VLC. :)

Got the 840av up and running on a ZuluSCSI setup with a 32GB SD card split into 4 different "SCSI drives". Spent Christmas with my mom, and she made her selections of LPs that she would like to have converted to audio she can play on her iPhone, AppleTV, iPad, and HomePods.

Process is a bit long but I am SUPER happy with the quality so far!

1. Play LP audio into DSP aware software on the Quadra.
2. Copy the files over to my Powermac G5 via the network
3. Convert the audio files into AIFF
4. Convert the AIFF files to Apple Lossless
5. Archive those files.
6. Convert the Apple Lossless files into AAC for devices with lower storage

Good way to use the last of the 68k workhorses, and an almost last hurrah for the PowerPC line. That and listening to this music is bringing back memories of growing up!

Amazing Stories! I was 15 when that show came out! Great show!

I saw the CGI laden intro (created on a BSD driven Gould PowerNode 9080) at the time when it was featured in a showcase of upcoming TV programmes and I was really excited to watch the series but it didn't reach our shores till the early 90s! A specialist channel aired the TV movies so I recorded them for their curiosity value because although the regular episodes are available on DVD, these versions were released on VHS and Laserdisc but not digital formats - and probably never will be.

What have I done with a PowerPC Mac today, beyond create the above screengrabs? :)

I installed InterWeb and PPCMC and then watched and downloaded YouTube content.

@wicknix - scrolling through YouTube results is excruciatingly slow. Have I not configured the browser correctly (I've installed uBlock, NoScript and I copied the TenFourFoxPEP prefs.js file into the relevant folder) or am I just expecting too much from my machine? (iBook G4/1.42 512 MB.)

Great work on the browser btw and thanks for maintaining this. :)

Use a mobile user agent and browse m.youtube - cuts down the CPU demand drastically.

Alternatively, browse an Invidious instance of Youtube like iteroni.com (which can even be browsed in Safari 4)

Finally finished refurbing it.

A couple of months ago a friend was cleaning out his basement prior to moving and offered me his old dual 2.3 G5, because it was either that or recycle it. I didn't really need it, but for a combination of nostalgia, and to save it from the scrapheap, I took it off his hands. Just finished cleaning it out, applying new thermal paste and reseating some wonky DIMMs. Popped the drive from my old, departed G5 in and it booted right up.

The only issue I'm having is, I think, the Airport card doesn't play well with my router, as I'm getting network speeds of ~150K/sec.

Like @Dronecatcher suggested use a mobile user agent.
Type about:config in the url bar and hit enter.
In the search box type: useragent
Right click on any white space and create a new string.
In the first box that pops up type: general.useragent.override.youtube.com
In the second box type: Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; Android 9.0; Mobile; rv:60) Gecko/60.0
Screen Shot 2022-12-27 at 11.00.11 PM.png

Restart the browser.
Now youtube urls should default to the mobile site and render much faster.

Cheers

Thanks, "Mummy Daddy" is on Vol III and I'm going to watch that in a while. :D

I recently used my Powerbook G4 to open up older non Intel Native installers to get some old games installed off of Macintosh Garden!

:)

Which games? Can you show them to us? :)

Iteroni = YouTube during the early years before it was consumed by Google and became bloated with wall-to-wall adverts on the site and within the videos! Maybe I should use that as my default portal for viewing YouTube content on any machine. :D

Using Iteroni made a huge difference in browsing through videos and of course it works identically with PPCMC:

I followed the instructions to switch the user agent and...

The snappiness that I observe with this iBook in general usage now extends to web browsing and I think that I'll witness even greater performance boosts with web activity once I upgrade the RAM and replace the 4200 RPM HDD with an SSD.

Thanks for your help @Dronecatcher and @wicknix. :)

Are you running the AirPort card in tandem with the white, T-shaped antenna mounted to the rear of the case? I lacked one of these, so I ended up using a real kludge of a fix: a half-unwound paper clip. It worked, but it wasn’t particularly fast.

The iBook's 4:3 LCD makes it perfect for watching films and TV programmes such as this which have a 1.37:1 aspect ratio. I'll have to see how 720p fares on a VGA monitor with the dual/extended desktop hack.

Brilliant writing and direction. Plus its scored by Danny Elfman! I enjoyed this episode and I can see why you like it. There's a perfect mix of humour (often dark), satirical commentary and adventure. At no point did I see the twist at the end coming and there shall be no spoilers by my hand for those who've not yet seen this gem. ;)
