My first impression about MorphOS. Simple love it! The Wayfarer & Iris is more than I want from a 20y old PowerPC laptop (Powerbook 15" DLSD). Audio/video playback/adjustment options can be improved. This is still a bit behind the capabilities offered by OS X. But this system is tempting and I'm looking to the 3.20.

Yay, another MorphOS user!

As somebody who never grew up using an Amiga-like OS, I found the prospect of MorphOS absolutely fascinating to explore and tinker with. It was one of the many reasons I wanted to pick up a Power Mac G5 in the first place.

I'm assuming you know about how the system slows itself down on purpose unless you buy a license though. That's probably the one drawback I can think of if you're just trying it out. I thought it was neat enough that I decided to buy the license anyway to help support development. They're a pretty small team, so they took around two to three days to send me my registration key file.

Just checked the system requirements for MorphOS, does it only work on PMG5 7.2/7.3 models?
I have a late PMG5 (11.2).

They are officially "unsupported" but it works fine, you will just need a PCIe NIC since the built-in LAN won't work. See: How to run MorphOS on unsupported G5 PCIe. I bought a TP-Link TG-3468 for mine.

I think older AirPort Extreme cards might also work but you need to come up with an antenna solution for those since the Late 05 has different antenna cable's that won't fit.

Today I found out that Late 2005 Power Mac G5s can actually boot from GUID disks. At this point in the more tech-savvy circles of MacRumors PPC forum this is probably somewhat common knowledge, but I had no idea. So the first thing I did was get a FireWire drive and install Leopard on it on my MacBook Pro, then hook it up to my Power Macs G5 to see if it worked. It did.

What in the world could I even *do* with this though? I guess sneakernet universal app builds between test machines? The compatibility is very useful, don’t get me wrong, but I’m still wondering why I would have an external drive shared by my MBP 08 and my PMG5.

Still cool. Probably gonna take some time in the near future and reformat my drives to be GUID.

Ignore the double post.

Actually though I am getting Nicotine+ running on the G5 too which will be useful for loading up my iPod ^^

Theoretically this would allow you to have a very large (>2 TiB) drive as your boot disk. Though getting a disk that size to actually boot is.... a troublesome matter in the least.
It would be a fun project for sure. I’m sure people have tried it on the Quad before.

The DLSD G4s also have this ability apparently which is pretty neat.

Any Mac with an Open Firmware version built in July 2005 or later should be able to boot from GPT formatted disks according to the "List of Open Firmware versions" at
https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...l-work-in-a-beige-power-macintosh-g3.2303689/

I am looking for Mac ROM dumps for any Mac or OF version not included in that list (excluding Macs that don't have Open Firmware) to fill in the gaps.

OK, this is a really stupid question, or at least I feel stupid asking it, but where can I get PPCPorts from? ... and is there a set of install instructions? Thanks!

macos-powerpc.org ? :)

I have updated links today, though did not yet upload 2.11.2.
2.11.1 is good to go anyway.

For 10.5 there is 2.11.2 already. (Keep in mind, testing on 10.5 is limited, though I confirm on my machine that it works upon installation.)
Pre-built packages for 10.5 aren’t many, but complete toolchain is there (ppc64).
