Finally got my G4 Mini back together and running properly. Replaced the dead hard drive, upgraded it to 1GB of memory, and overclocked it to 1.67GHz.

Yes ilok, same for the virus indigo. Bought from ebay and transfered to my ilok account. 100% legit :) you need the whole shebang (96 i/o or 192 i/o with a minimum of a hd core pci-x or pcie card)

I paid my virus 100$ ( still 999$ on avid website) Heres a link to another low price virus. You can still use current gen ilok on ppc mac.

Yes it took me a while to figure what I wanted and how I could get everything. Protools 8 come already with quality effect. Maybe not the best in the world but very usable plugins. Same for logic 9.

If you love using ableton, its possible to find old cd of live lite 8 with unused license. This is what I did (I used the license provided with my midi keyboard that I bought back in 2011). Ableton still allow registration of ppc mac.

You can use the hardware as a simple audio interface, integrated inside logic with tdm support or native inside pt.

For me going back on a G5 is what it took to stop using cracked software. Anyway, sorry for the long text. I love my setup. Heres a license for pt. I bought mine from this seller.

I finally installed the refurbished power supply (with all the capacitors replaced) and the machine is back up and working. I also finally received the Firmtek Serialtek 1v4 PCI-X card, which gives me 4 SATA ports. I don't need 4 SATA ports, but the PCI-X bandwidth makes the PowerMac G4 even faster since it can take advantage of the faster PCI-X speeds. Still, the SSD is still 20% of what it normally be on SATA 3. Still faster than ATA.

IMG_1780.jpg
Also, I got the adapter that allows me to use my Apple LED Cinema Display since I stopped using it after retiring my MacBook Pro 15" mid-2012. The webcam and audio doesn't work in Mac OS 9, but it does in Mac OS X. Also installed all the Unsanity Haxies because why not.

The last upgrade is flashing a PC version of the NVidia Geforce 4 Ti 4600, the fastest video card that works on Mac OS 9.

Amazing work! What OS X version and theme you are using for the first screenshot “ssd results” ? It kinda looks like a revamped OS 9 theme. I love the dock - perfect transparency.

Amazing! Glad you got the PSU working. OS 9 looks beautiful on that display, I really want an official Apple display of some description to use with my G4 Digital Audio.

As a side note, what background are you using on OS X? It looks really nice. :)

Got a lot done on SM64EXLC.app. Currently the app is bigger then my iBook G3 Clamshell’s original HDD though but things are turning out well, can’t wait to release this.

Also, I’m messing around with something really cool, an AppleScript program that converts either the contents of a TenFourFoxBox window, Safari window, or a plain old .html document into plain text! So many useful things can be accomplished by this... it’s like reverse mark down!

Been upgrading from tiger to leopard on an G5 iMac. Takes a while to get all the available updates installed...and other preferred apps.
Was surprised at running a movie trailer on Youtube using Webkit.
Also found the PPCAPPStore rather useful. I often download software then months later wonder wot it does.. but with that being like a database with descriptions I can quickly look it up.

Im not sure why but it seems more fun using an G5 iMac than either of my two intel iMacs..?
..but Im going to let a friend borrow the G5 iMac as she likes the retro look of it and she is having trouble reading small screens on phones and laptops.

I have to say that maybe a year ago I would have scoffed at that idea, but after snagging a 17 inch G4 iMac off eBay, for use at home as my 'writing system' I do tend to think there's something in it.

It's totally stock - except I replaced the PRAM battery and upped it to 1.5Gb RAM, and will be replacing the 80Gb drive with a 120gig SSD once I have a spare evening to take it apart - but it is an absolute joy to use, where my Intel Macs all seem a bit tedious and hard work by comparison.

I also have a clamshell iBook, (and a Mac Classic, a 1400cs and a TiBook) which all have much more character... whatever that really is!

I can't compete with what some of you guys in this thread are doing to, and with, your old Macs though - y'all make me sick!! ;)

za9ra22 - There was a time when I would have 'scoffed' too - ha!!!
Tried to quantify just what that 'something' is about it but cant figure it.

My G5 is a 17 inch iMac.. I did have leopard on it but thought Id give tiger a go seeing it seemed a much lighter OS. But when it comes to doing web stuff, those 'extras' available thru leopard software make a big difference...so went back to leopard.

Im amazed at the software thats available for PPC Macs. Sat up after midnight just looking at whats available.

Came across 'RetroArc'. As a sometimes Linux user, this was quite unlike any thing Id seen before in that it starts up while running MacOS - no install, no live Cd, just click the dwg file. Its not like a stand alone operating system though, described as .. 'a frontend for emulators, game engines and media players.'
I downloaded the small file from last year but in macintosh garden theres a link to a more recent but larger file.

When I first sat down to use a Mac, it was because our Mac user retired and I was asked to take over his job. That was a Mac Plus in 1988, I think. I powered it up, and got the Happy Mac. It just seemed much more friendly than the DOS systems I'd been using, and far more inviting. It was cute, in a way that computers really weren't. And it felt like it was part of the team, not just a machine.

The G4 iMac has replaced a bunch of DOS computers, because I needed something that could be used on the coffee table at home, but with a screen I could position for comfort. The G4 suited that rather well, and for a small amount on eBay, was pretty much perfect. And like Macs in the old days always did, it just lets me get on with the job without getting in the way like PCs tend to do - and like newer Macs too, with their constant distractions and demands for taking notice, updating - the feeling of working for them rather than them working for me.

Given that most of what I need could actually be done on a 1983-vintage portable (actually, a TRS-80 Model 100, the first practical laptop), it isn't hard to get the G4 to cover all my bases very well!

Filmed some video today. Tried getting MacMINIX on my PowerBook 1400, couldn't get that working. I also tried Power MachTen on my iBook and that ran but the X Window System didn't work right.

Also demoed some browsers under OS 7.6.1. :)

And how did that go ? (the browser demos). I assume the browser testing has something to do with System7today reboot. It would be lovely to get a basic functioning browser on 7. I have a particular fond spot for 7.6.1, it was my OS for donkey's years on my Blackbird 520c, I actually went back to it after installing 8 because I hated OS 8's "platinum" interface so much. 3D buttons? who needs that? I want my buttons and windows FLAT.

Pretty much, I visited both my site and System 7 Today. I primarily looked at the stability of the browser and such, as that is the most important thing for me on older browsers.

I agree on the UI. I don't mind Platinum, but I love the System 7 look a lot. :)

TLDW; from the video: Web browsing is more stable on OS 7.6.1 than 8.1. I use Netscape Communicator 4.8 on my 1400 because it's PPC, but Navigator 4.08 would be my choice for most web browsing on 68k 7.6.1. WannaBe is good if you don't need CSS or images. IE 4 works ok, but there are better options. Opera 5 works ok but is a little slow compared to the others.

And colour. Ugh. Who needs that? System 7's monochrome look ftw!
You know, you guys joke, but it's actually the lack of low and no color modes on G4 and G5 systems that bothers me. You can't even put these things into a good 16 color mode, never mind a proper 2 color mode. It's a graphics card limitation, and while not as important on a G5, I can feel it limit me on my G4 MDD as I try to play games from the very distant past.

I mean, you can't even play the original version of Simcity, it needs a 16 color mode to start. Sure, there's Simcity Classic, but I want to go back further.

I like macOS 9 a lot. Simple and efficient. I can't believe that I have never used it on its heyday. System 7 I have never used too, just toyed with it a little on my emulators. It's actually pretty similar for me, just that OS 9 has more colors and a beautiful standard theme. People can have different tastes.

Browsing experience could improve. https support can be reached with another computer acting as a MITM between the OS 9 and the internet. Better HTML support could happen if Retrozilla (Windows Mozilla 2.x or 3.x port, I can't remember the version) and Classilla (macOS version based on 1.x) developers were talking to eachother. I know that Cameron Kaiser has said that he didn't abandon it, and put more effort on TenFourFox, but I think TTF is getting to a point where it is stable enough to give time for more Classilla development. Just my opinion, ofc.

So, fun fact, you can make OS 7 look like OS 8 or OS 9.

It's actually one of the bits that came from Copland that didn't quite go the way Apple had intended. You don't lose any noticeable performance, or at least, none I've seen. If only there was a way to go the other way, it would certainly be fun to see OS 7 style windows show up in Classic under 10.4.

Ok, I'm back having been messing with Debian Remix. Trying to install Lubuntu 12.04 Remix onto an 867MHz, 1 Gig Ram, G4 with an Nvidia GeForce4 MX 420 GPU. Getting to a desktop has been difficult, but once I did, I started the install from the Live Remix USB and saw the following during installation:

CRITICAL ERROR: Ubiquity unable to create /root/.cache/dconf; dconf will not work properly

The install is continuing but I've been here before. When it comes time to reboot after the install is completed, the installer either crashes or when I get to the screen where it says to remove the install media and hit enter, all I get is "/x". It's like the system doesn't recognize the keyboard (US English). So I can only shutdown the computer and on restart, the Linux drive doesn't appear, no yaboot select screen comes up.

So, I reformat and try again.

HELP?!?!?!

Sounds like bad install media. I'd dd the iso to the usb stick again for good measure. Also, any reason you can't install from DVD? I have a feeling yaboot and possibly the system are accidently being installed to the usb stick rather than the HDD. If that happens the system is unbootable. It's happened to me before. Installing via dvd fixed it. I also recommend not connecting to the net before installing. Letting it update during install is known to break the installer, causing a hang. Install the updates after the system is installed and rebooted.

Cheers

Put Jaguar on my 1.5ghz Sawtooth last night. I made a DMG of my Tiger partition, deleted said partition, and then replaced it with two smaller partitions (30 GB for Tiger and 15 GB for Jaguar). I restored my Sawtooth’s Tiger setup to the new Tiger partition and I installed Jaguar by restoring a DMG I made of my iBook G3’s Jaguar installation (10.2.8 with all updates applied) to the Jaguar partition I created. Jaguar runs pretty well on the Sawtooth. Took a couple minutes to start up, but it runs fine.
