I think it doesn't worth it. Even G5 Quad is not very fast for building things like FireFox or some else heavy packages. AFAIK G4 would howl around a week, even upgraded to max :). (BTW, my Quad is laying in unworking state now, troubles with LCS, which I currently can't resolve.)
Ha - thanks for the heads up. You saved me a lot of frustration time !!!

Tratkazir - wot do you think of Gentoo? I guess youve got it running on a G5. Is it too heavy for a G4 do you think??
I did a search in their forums re on PPCs..but their guys seem to discourage people from trying it as its quite a process to set up.

Linux Format magazine did a small article on installation(not PPC) but did say it was one of the faster Linux distributions.
Gentoo is not easy to set up.. Avoid it !

YOU DELETED THE THREAD !!!! I can't access it, its gone ! I heard about that guy.. I wanted revenge on him.
You do realize I'm not a MOD right?

Unless you're being sarcastic? I tend not to get tone in internet discussions so I can't easily tell.

That said, as far as I know, you weren't here when Rabidz7 was. So there's nothing in it for you to take revenge over.

Today i built the latest Lynx browser on ubuntu 10.04. Amazing the amount of current software that can still be built on it.

Cheers

I'm so proud of myself for doing all of this during just one day; postponing absolutely nothing, and even put all the tools and trash away by the end of the same day.
➜ Fetched a package of RAM from the post office
➜ Upgraded clamshell iBook to full RAM (10min)
➜ Upgraded iMac G4 to full RAM, replaced its PRAM battery, and thermal paste (1h)

Both machines boot happily, no casualties. The iMac is now fully upgraded and I hopefully will never need to open it up again. I'll think about the SSD and PRAM capacitor swap job for the iBook sometime later, not necessarily this year.

I installed a flashed radeon 9250 in my 7448 sawtooth g4, I also cleaned up an imac g5 i got for free over the weekend and installed osx leopard on it
are you gonna try snow leopard on your iMac g5?
I did but went back to leopard. Just seems to work better... mind you that was a year ago (I think) so it may be improved since then.

There have been a number of improvements and swapped-out stuff to make it run more smoothly, but I would recommend to try using Build 10A96 as a starting point. There are a couple of folks who’ve continued to work with Build 10A190 to make that version run with more stability. My own volunteering has been focussed on getting 10A96 to run more smoothly.

That said, when the project became known last year, a lot of folks instinctively, in the spirit of “newer == better”, went for the 10A190 build — either via installer or that image of an installed system posted online — and left disappointed after finding a number of stability and functionality problems. Build 10A96 is, fundamentally, a better place to start experimenting for the simple reason that fewer PowerPC-related components were stripped out or missing.

Eventually, the goal is to assemble a routine installer with many of the project’s fixes integrated into the mix (this is the case for both Builds 10A96 and 10A190), so that manually moving those fixes into place has already been taken care of. :)

I did think about give SL a go on it, you guys have done some amazing work getting it to where it is now. PPC Snow Leopard is something I never thought i'd see. Having said that, mine's an ALS model which has a 9600 in it that seems to not have acceleration support. Is there a hit on performance when doing tasks like putzing around the internet or messing aroung in the os without any hardware acceleration?

In my experience (including typing this on my PowerBook5,8 running 10A96), not really, no. Mind you, this is after applying many of the fixes and component swaps with the later 10.5.8 counterparts.

Running QuickTime 7.7.0 for Leopard, I can view SD mp4 video. FPS varies usually between 18 and 24fps, which obviously isn’t perfect, but considering the CPU is handling the playback, it’s better than expected. VLC is a no-go for video (because it’s looking for that GPU and can’t engage it). And I’ve never been a gamer, so graphics-intensive stuff, like vector drawing and refresh, probably isn’t what you might expect if running Leopard.

Otherwise, however? There are still a couple of predictable quirks endemic of a work-in-progress system, but it’s remarkably solid and good enough that, even though this PowerBook is split into two partitions (10A96 and 10.5.8), I’ve virtually never used 10.5.8 on it (unless it’s to log in as root so I can swap system-level components in 10A96 for testing). I find using InterwebPPC to be a pretty smooth experience overall, and the UI is pretty decent, as well.

Sure thing! The dual-core G5s are, actually, one of the only confirmed line of PowerPC Macs which do have hardware acceleration support for the GeForce Quadro PCIe GPU. Unlike with my test G4 system, you may find very good performance from not only QT video, but also VLC and even games.

If you give it a go and get your hands dirty by manually moving over components to optimize your experience, you should share your experiences over on that thread! We haven’t heard much from folks who’ve been running SL-PPC on dual-core G5s with PCIe graphics, and that’s a whole area which deserves thorough exploration.
