I just had an epiphany....

instead software to measure the speed of a computer, like geek-bench,
what if there was software that measures the boringness of a system?
I'm sure the early Intels would fail a boring test since there are more open and expandable,
but the M1 OS would pass with flying purple, blue yellow colors!

And twice the level 2 cache.
Yes, it does have double vs the original. 👍 This could have an effect on feel when using it vs. just the raw difference in cpu speed. But, I don't expect to use this computer so much myself, I'll leave it to do its job in the background. Well, anyways the cpus will be upgraded.

The cpus have become much cheaper during the last several years after I considered upgrading my original MM 2007 2.0GHz. Back then I found it not doable due high pricing but now a brand new T7600 costs about the same as 2 pints of beer so no biggie anymore. So, I ordered a/an(?) another T7600 so I can upgrade both machines.

BTW. the Mint installed without problems and is now updating itself.

Ps. I am now surfing the forum with the Mac Mini 2007 with Linux Mint 21 Cinnamon and its quite fast! But it seems little memory hungry vs. some lighter Linuxes.

This morning I used my 2010 MBA w/ Catalina to take part in a video-call session via Microsoft Teams...

...followed by checking and replying to emails in Outlook 16.

With the serious work out of the way (for a while!) I loaded up the GBA emulator mGBA and treated myself to some fun...

…or so I thought. Somehow, I'd forgotten how sadistically difficult this game (along with all the franchise's other entries) is.

Unlike other GBA titles, this one caused the MBA to struggle - very likely because it's significantly more demanding on the hardware. I'll have to try it on a faster machine as the 1.4 Ghz C2D CPU may not be to the task of managing the emulation and running the game itself. Perhaps my i5 MBA to appease @Amethyst1? :D

As I mentioned briefly somewhere up there ^^^, I did some upgrades on BiL's MBP 2009 17" C2D. All went well. Nice machine! But now he has it back, running Monterey, he cannot connect to wifi, and I don't have a machine running Monterey to guide him as I'd like. He cannot connect to his network at all, just refuses, so this being the case, he cannot forget it and rejoin. Stumped...

First ask him to try zapping the PRAM. Then try to connect to the wifi by joining "other" and entering wifi name etc. manually. Then try to make a new network place and try it all again.

Im learning that Monterey is like any other OS system presence wise just a different color and flat graphic in the dock Manu bar. Was the problem with OCLP or a generic...ummm problem with the router?

Monterey worked great on my MBP'12 for 4 days then just stopped on day 5.

Insomnia has reunited with me once more and I'm eager to unwind with something stimulating, so I acquired a copy of this PBS documentary on Zora Neale Hurston and I'm currently watching it on my MBP 2011 w/ High Sierra. Initially I started off with VLC but there were huge sync issues which were solved by switching to QuickTime.

Watching this documentary has made me reflect on my own journey through academia and similarly to Hurston, my degree pathways have included the same fields of anthropology, ethnography along with creative writing and given me food for thought about developing my career further in those areas. I suppose feeling inspired is indicative of illuminating film-making.

i just got myself a 2010 White Unibody Macbook (i was lucky for some reason the rubber still in a good condition albeit dirty)

As usual, swap the HDD with SSD, upgrade the ram (i pick 8gb for now) then install mojave (32bit app reason)

then i remember there is one upgrade that i really wanted for this machine that is a modern airdrop (iphone -> macbook and vice versa) so i got myself a 2012’s wireless card to swap in, little modification required and not hard at all

Old early intel macs is the best!

The 2010 polycarbonate MacBooks are such delightful machines. I have mine tricked out with 16GB RAM and an SSD, though I haven’t gone as far as upgrading the wireless capabilities of it yet. Great score, enjoy!

Hello everyone!

The 13" macbook pro 2012 wont accept a disc, is there a fix?
(besides getting a m2012 retina one as others suggested
....or plunking Mojave in that bay on a un-used 500GB ssd WD drive)

I do have an external dvd play that loaded dreamweaver and iWorks this week on 3 Macs.
so this is not a dire issue, just something I would like to solve.

thanks in advance

Yes, buy a working Superdrive and replace the broken one. First of course check that the drive is connected.

Or if it has never accepted one and you bought the machine second hand, open the bottom case and look if you have a SuperDrive there or not. Its quite popular mod to remove the drive and replace it with a second hard drive or SSD. Mine (MBP 2012 13" i7) was modded that way.

Agree, its clean white color is what makes it look quite different~ maybe in the future i’ll upgrade it to 16gb too

Pop it open and check the drive, see that it's plugged in and there isn't something jammed in it.
If it looks alright but still won't accept a disk, I'd just replace it.

that means these CD/DVD drives are not repairable?
They could be but as a seasoned vintage hifi DIY-enthusiast I must say even the old basic CD-drives can be difficult to fix - unless you get a new laser unit from somewhere. When thinking of Apple CD/DVD -drives I would think its much cheaper and easier to get a working replacement drive than try to find spare parts. Of course if its only dirty then you can try cleaning it...

I concur. There's no end of traders on eBay who sell replacement units inexpensively. When the optical drive on my 2006 MBP failed, I bought a new one from Taiwan for next to nothing and it arrived in 7 days. :)

Copy 1.24TB off drive 4 to temporary folder on drive 2. Took two hours, was done by around 9:30am. Shut down, pull drive 4, swap 6TB drive for 8TB drive, boot and format new drive.

Now copying 1.24TB back from drive 2 to drive 4 (new). Two hours.

After that I got to set drive shares back up and redirect Dropbox. Just didn't want to LAN Sync 1.24 TB!

Oh yeah, drive health is now 100%. Western Digital Red with CMR, manufactured December 2023.
