It's a Macally Firewire/eSATA/USB drive enclosure. The firmware limits it to 1TB drives and it's age limits it to lower-powered drives. I have a 1TB Western Digital Green in there which I use to store periodic dumps of my Camera Uploads folder from Dropbox.

I don't really trust it overmuch, so I don't store anything I can't afford to lose on it - but it's more dependable than the second unit I got which is USB and ethernet. It is however, useful for some situations where I need to temporarily store files before moving them elsewhere.

I got it off eBay, so I can only link to some other site offering it for sale: https://www.newegg.com/macally-g-s350sua/p/N82E16817347017

Note that this one is 2TB, mine is limited to a 1TB drive max.

EDIT: This one, below, is the problem child. I got it recently as a NAS, but the firmware is garbage so I used it as USB 2.0. Last weekend it decided to bomb on me during a copy operation and it took down all of my MacPro's USB ports. Fortunately, I was able to reset the ports and they all work now.

But I have zero faith in this drive enclosure now.
jeepers that sounds bit of a nightmare.. bad enough when that volume of data is iffy with out the usb prob.
That macally enclosure ..wonders if there'd be a possibility of getting a raspberry pi in that case..building an actual mini me mac pro.???

well wasted last night and most of today trying to install mavericks onto unsupported hardware - iMac 5,1..so now to decide wether to reinstall snow leopard or have a crack at mountain lion. I have had lion on it before but preferred snow leopard. Could have a go at mountain lion.

I'd rather look into shoving an x86 board in there - for a real Hackintosh. :)

I have one of those, I only bought it because of the way it looked. I loved the lil grater look. I have a 500Gb in mine and its just a bunch of old backups of PowerBooks and old PPC versions of iLife libraries. I should reclaim the drive for something else.

Yeah, the FW/eSATA version is ok, but this NAS version I bought is just awful.

I'm going to try hooking it up to another Mac that's not critical, along with a external dock I have and see if they are usable there. This Mac sees less use and if they function there then fine. We'll see.

Ha - even better... better end result!!
..while looking at that link , and Jacks ref to the grater look... found myself wondering if a box grater could work as a case..erm...maybe not ..with all those sharp edges.

Working on reclaiming storage on my media hard drive using my '09 MacBook. Been unzipping 7zip archives and encoding DV video to mp4 in Handbrake all day.
..so wot sort of mp4 settings are you using.?
From EyeTv Im exporting to mp4 h264 on the fastest setting : vid H264/avc 1920x1080 25fps; aud AAC, stereo 24000hz. However at this setting the file size is much the same..just wanted a reasonable quality done quickly.

I forget the settings exactly, but I used the Fast 1080p30 in Handbrake and then modified the resolution to fit my needs.

I freed up somewhere around 230GB total IIRC? It was a considerable amount and I'm satisfied :)

Today, I used my BlackBook to convert a vinyle into Wave file. I'm still impressed by its usability, even today !

Scanned >500 single- & multipage-documents with my early-2008 MBP and the ScanSnap ix500.
While DEVONthink (with inbuilt AbbyFineReader) started to convert scanned PDFs into searchable PDFs in the background (which is more than an overnight job), I watched that mindblowing documentary "My Octopus Teacher" with BassJump2 subwoofer enhancement.

Best thing with DEVONthink is, that I can have access to my databases even on PPC/Tiger&Leopard.
I'm gonna stick with MojavePatch/HFS+ as long as possible to keep legacy compatibility to PPC and 32bit-Apps alive.

I bought a drakware ADB to USB converter on eBay recently and I am currently testing it out on my 2009 Mac Mini. I'm on Ubuntu at the moment and the converter is working great. I'm typing this post on my Apple Extended Keyboard II and I love it! I love typing on this keyboard and now with this converter, I can use it on my modern machines. And by modern I mean my Sawtooth and newer.

OK…I have to do this ONE MORE TIME when the new table gets here. But for now, until it shows up this is IT until then. We are back to 6 displays. I wanted to keep the old acrylic Cinema Display attached as it has served me extremely well.

Removed a FW drive enclosure, removed a USB 1.0 hub and a USB optical drive (for the G3 server).

Still have to put all the little stuff back, but despite the kludge I think it worked out.

PS. I have two KVM switches tied in.

Set up boot camp on my 2006 MBP. I now have Windows XP and Leopard on the same Mac. It’s been fun using Windows XP again, so much nostalgia.

I upgraded TFF and PPCMC center to the latest versions on my MBP’s Leopard install. I had issues streaming videos at first and at one point after clicking the option to stream the video, Opera popped up and tried loading the video and kept asking me to accept certificates for various web addresses related to YouTube. I force quitted Opera to get it to stop. Strange thing is, I don’t have Opera installed on my Mac, nor did this version of Opera seem to install itself onto my Mac. I did get streaming to work by doing a YouTube-dl update, but I am still puzzled how Opera just randomly appeared like that.

Out of an abundance of caution, I ended up wiping my MBP's SSD and restored Leopard to the drive using a DMG that I made a couple months back. So, at some point I will have to setup bootcamp again and reinstall XP.

You may install VMware Fusion to run your BootCamp-WinXP as a VirtualMachine. So you have light-XP as a VM and full-XP, whenever you need more performance ...

Not a bad idea, but I think I will stick to my current setup for now.

Well I have my Leopard/XP dual boot setup again. I did test out PPCMC 7.2.3 again, but this time I used a copy that I had downloaded to my Sawtooth about a week or so ago instead of downloading from the Garden like I did last night. I updated YouTube-dl first before trying to stream videos. I haven't seen the randomly appearing Opera browser again and I have been able to stream and download videos.
