here is another mock up I made.

I've got to wonder about the "antenna" though ;)
Surely we all live in a bluetooth enabled world?

Crunch gear had this idea looong before the glass trackpad appeared on the MacBooks yet their mockup (if you forget the somewhat "out there" number pad idea) has exactly the trackpad used on the new MacBooks.

Here's their mockup - dated May 2008.

I would buy one of these in a heartbeat.

Crunchgear's awesome keyboard mockup.

I think it would be poignant if the company that brought us the mouse killed the mouse. I've been saying the mouse is dead for years and i yearn for it to be replaced by a large trackpad. It's not good for gaming, but it is so much easier on your wrist and advanced gestures will mean productivity gains. I'm far better with my trackpad than with my mighty mouse. Apple can't be putting so much design and research into these multi touch devices only to give us an updated mighty mouse. It's apple worst product by far imo. Unfortunately you will have issues taking me away from my conventional keyboard though.

The mouse is dead! Long live the trackpad!

Mockup I made in another thread.

Have the trackpad seperate, not everyone wants the trackpad built into the keyboard.

It would have 2 usb plugs on either side, and come with a USB (Male) to USB (Male) adapter, so not only could it be plugged into either side of the keyboard, but also, there would be a port still spare so that you could plug in your mouse.

I've been envisioning Apple coming out with this since the Macbook Air was first announced. Still patiently waiting, and I would definatley get the wireless version.

And I'm sure they would make a right-handed and left-handed one and have the mighty mouse still available in stores in case people still preferred the traditional mouse.

Maybe this would do then...

I hate it for one reason.

I am left handed, that thing is useless to me unless it is on the other side.

If they released 2 versinos or made it a seperate section/device then i would love to get one.

Personally i think a mousemat with built in multi-touchpad would be better though. even with a pad a mouse is still useful

How about instead of being an entirely new keyboard, just have a trackpad that plugs into either the left or right USB port and snuggles up against the keyboard? Maybe have some kind of bracket on the bottom to stabilize it so it wouldn't strain the USB plug. That way it would be useful for Righties or Lefties. Just a thought. :)

here is a mockup of the keyboard Apple should have come out with today... maybe we will get lucky and see this on the 3/24.

Thats what I'm talking about!

I really hope Phil announces something like this so I can have all that sweet swiping and multitouch for my iMac.

I just photoshoped this real fast, what do you think, would you buy it?
I would!

Great Job on the mock up! :D I'm fairly certain this is the only valid reason why Apple would chop the keyboard. An optional USB glass track pad will be offered soon.

It's Coming....

Perfect! Of course it's on the new smaller keyboard though. :)

I love the idea of the trackpad being a separate unit so you can attach it on either side, but I don't know how I feel about it just hanging there from the usb port.
Maybe they could use some of that magsafe magic to attach it to the keyboard?

Honestly, this is an awful idea.

You can't compare the versatility of a mouse with a trackpad.

Excellent idea!

Well, since we're reviving old threads....

I doubt this will happen anytime soon. I'd wager Apple is trying to keep this a mobile exclusive product, for whatever philosophy.
