VMWare Fusion with a Win10 VM. I run Ross-Tech's VCDS to diagnose issues with my VW and it is a Windows-only product. I also use Windows-only software from AiM Sports to manage an automotive datalogging device (AiM SoloDL) and their Race Studio Analysis software to analyze and interpret the data retrieved from the datalogger. If I can no longer run Windows as a VM on my Mac then I will need a machine that can run Windows. Then the question becomes, do I really still need a Mac, or is the choice of a Mac simply a preference that is overruled by my requirements?

I picked up a cheap Windows laptop years ago for AiM SoloDL, Race-Keeper HD, and my Durametric Diagnostic software. Cost about $500 and I don't care if it gets run over by someone's Spec Miata. It's nice having a portable I don't really care about for the paddock and around the track. Still, yeah, the lack of Windows VM capability is probably going to be fatal to me and my customer relationship with Apple.
I know old posts, but for internet forum closure, and since AiM RaceStudio and Analysis software is rather specific, I thought I'd state the current situation.

Using a new 2021 14" MBP M1 Pro you can successfully run AiM RaceStudio on Apple Silicon. You need (based on what's currently available Dec 2021):
- Parallels 17
- Windows 11 ARM Insider Preview
- AiM RaceStudio 3 Beta

You're relying on the insider preview of Windows 11 ARM, so this combo may not work if Microsoft changes their mind/plans.

I'll wait until Windows 11 ARM is commercially available. Once that happens, I expect VMWare will have updated Fusion to support it. I doubt that RaceStudio 3 or the beta of RSA is actually required, RS2 should be ok. Either one will need to run in an X64 emulator. Fwiw, I don't think RS3 supports the older SoloDL I use.

I’m going to miss Windows, because I use it daily and for me, part of having a MacBook is using both Mac OS and Windows.
From what I have read, looks like a lot of the stuff I’d do with Windows (games) won’t work on the current version of Windows for ARM. Hopefully future versions fix this.

Running Windows in a VM is my main miss, because I actually need it.

I did like Hoyle Card Games quite a lot, so I guess I miss that too. (It was 32-bit, so it's a double whammy) I even kept my Intel Mac Mini on Mojave for a long time just to play it. I run it on one of my Windows PC's now since it was never updated. What can I say, I like Bridge or a quick round of pinochle. I know that's lame. :)

Probably being able to run a Windows VM, because I need Windows for my new job. But not having gpu pass through limited the functionality anyway and I have my trusty 5,1 to run Winblows anyway and remote in from my (eventual) M1, so I’m not bothered too much.

It remains to be seen how well Dearf Fortress will run (if at all), I’d be sad to lose that.

ScrapIt Pro.

I think I can use Apple's "Notes" in place of it, not convinced yet.

Probably Parallels 15. I put the version as I'm trying to make it last a few years, but I ordered an M1 Pro so that isn't going to work....unless I move the license to my Mac mini!

It's really useful for running Windows as there are some apps I use . mostly retro console modding tools, that only run on windows.

You can still run Windows with Parallels 17. Yes need an upgraded licence, but that's the cost with certain software.

The problem with Parallels 17 is they moved from a one-time fee for a license to this garbage subscription model.
Everybody thinking their software is worth a subscription needs to stop. We don't need subscriptions for everything, it's absurd.

Yes, I won't use Parallels because you need to pay every time Apple upgrades the OS.

On Intel Macs VMWare Fusion is free and in addition to Windows and Linux allows you to virtualize older versions of MacOS (useful if you need to run old 32bit apps).

Ubuntu has a free virtualization tool called Multipass which lets you quickly spin up Ubuntu Server VMs and that is supported on M1 and Intel Macs and Docker is also free and supported on Intel and M1 Macs.

If Notes doesn’t cut it, you might look at Microsoft’s OneNote. It looks like it has a lot of the features of ScrapIt. It also supports tables in the text notes better than Apple Notes does.

I'm moving my main Mac to Apple silicon next month, my plan was to sell my Mac mini afterwards, but I could keep it to keep Parallels 15 going. That's an option to consider.

Or use my Windows gaming pc to run windows app. It's not as convenient as running a VM on my Macbook as the gaming pc is on a different floor. On the other hand, running up an down the stairs between steps in a procedure, such as prepping a hard drive for us in a ps2 fat console, would be good exercise. :)

If that's its only purpose I would just go to boot camp. You'll be surprised how good it is!

Will that work on Apple silicon? I’m getting my M1 Mac next month.

It would be less convenient than a vm as when I start a multi-hour task on Windows, I couldn’t use my Mac apps until it’s done.

Same boat here. ARM macOS is the end of the road for me. It’s terribly sad and I dread migrating to Windows or Linux, because I really do prefer macOS.

But first and foremost I need to be able to do my job, and my job requires that I be able to build and run x86 docker containers. I need to start figuring out my exit strategy...

So I guess my answer is this. “macOS” is the software I will miss the most after the ARM transition.
++Agreed. docker on m1 sucks

Emulators are going to take the longest time to port to Apple Silicon because there are so many cores spread out across so many developers. Every core has to be separately ported to Apple Silicon.

Well I noticed that more and more Mac developers are shying away from Apple's Mac Store over the yearly fee! Even some semi large developers are shying away too! This worries me how many DAW plugins are fly by night developers and haven't upgraded to run on M1 or better!
