Sorry. I posted on the wrong thread.

There ought to be a way for someone to delete their own post.
There is if you are a Contributor/Demi God/Goddess -- it's one of the benefits. That delete function does come in handy once in a while!

Back on topic, I believe it would not be possible to install and use CS5 on a machine running Big Sur -- time to update to either the subscription-based Adobe software (Photoshop, Lightroom, etc.) or move on to a non-subscription program such as Affinity Photo, Capture One, DXO PhotoLab 4, etc......

Agree.

The native Mac app, Photos, is only ok (the iOS 6 era Photos was GREAT).

Thanks.

(let's see how many gloss over the non-subscription part ....)
Not going to read this whole thread. So If I repeat others, so be it.

What do you mean "edit?"

If you are looking for an answer to Lightroom:
Apple Photos is FAR better than it gets credit for once you open up the more advanced options. It's integration into Apple system is second to none, and its organization is pretty good with albums, smart albums, keywords and so on. There are also things where the AI can link photos without keywords (search obvious keywords like Beaches).
Capture One is available non subscription and widely regarded as a better RAW processor/editor than LR
Luminar is fun, but I use it more as a plugin
Side note Aurora HDR for HFR work is better than Lightroom for that one task
On1 is powerful, and offers RAW layers for composites
DxO is said to have some of the best noise reduction around if you need that feature

Aftershot is out there, but I was not personally thrilled with it.
Darktable is open source similar to LR (like Gimp to Photoshop), but I couldn't stand it. Your mileage may vary.
There are a few other open source options out there.

For full on Pixel pushers like Photoshop
Affinity Photos is outstanding, and similar enough to PS to follow along those tutorials
Pixelmator Pro is good, but it seems to have different plans than Photoshop, so it might be harder (or easier) to find the same results.
Gimp - like Darktable, it was just not for me, but the price is right if you want to try it for yourself.

I used to use PS (CS5 stand alone) but since upgrading to Catalina none of my Adobe apps work.

I will NOT go the subscription route.

I use Pixelmator - it's okay, not PS but okay.

The NIK apps still work.
I'm staying on Mojave with an older laptop to be able to run Adobe CS6 and Nik.

CS5 is supposed to have 64bit compatibility. But I think it’s a long shot to get it to work properly on Big Sur.
Thanks for your reply Molly. To change 32bit / 64bit I need access to the contents of the disc, but as the disc will not install I can't get access. It looks like one of those "chicken and egg" situations! When I load the disc via external disc drive the message "Bad CPU type in executable" appears. I don't know enough about computer technology to know if this can be overridden or not. Any ideas?

I have been doing the same on a 2019 iMac, but very soon will start the process of updating the OS to Big Sur, and switching to both Affinity Photo plus DOX's Photo Lab with the NIK software bundle. Affinity Photo is a relatively inexpensive app, but quite powerful (there is a learning curve). A lot of photographers have switched from the Adobe CC apps to Affinity Photo. Photo Lab with the Nik software bundle is quite a nice app, and easy to learn.
