Thats what I was trying to suggest owners of the 4850 do :)

Haha, i thought that was what you were getting at. Does the VendorID stay constant across the entire lineup? ie Does the fact that mine is 600 mean it is the same supplier who supplied RAM for the dodgy 2007 cards?

If thats the case then surely this is a given? Time to get on ATI's case with Apple's support?

Can we get someone with a non freezing 4850 setup to post their VendorID please?

So people , can anyone who hasnt had any freezes please check the memVendorID thing?, my iMac has frozen multiple times and i have
memVendorID: 0600
and memRevisionID: 0200

After waiting 4 weeks, my new iMac has finally shipped.

I am hoping this will not happen with mine....I will be running that terminal command as soon as I get it.

Crashing iMac:

"ATY,MemVendorID" = <0600>
| | | | | "ATY,MemRevisionID" = <0200>

Ok we pretty much confirmed that if your iMac is crashing or locking up that it will report back a 0600 ID. But what about anybody whose machine is not locking up. We have not seen many results from people whose machines are fine.

Maybe if someone would come forward and verify that it is safe to run this type of test on their iMac, then more would do it and post their findings?.

Can we please get some postings of iMacs that are not locking up and post your findings on this Thread?

Apple is the common dominator, dominating your @ss with their inability to test FOUR video cards before releasing them to the public! Seriously, I can't believe people STILL defend them, when all they had to do was get a small sample of machines, with a whole FOUR configurations, and test them for like 10 minutes! And last time it took them 3 months to fix it?? They might as well change their slogan to "Apple: It Just Works in 3 months, after our unsuspecting users test our machines for us." Yet Windows "just works" with four HUNDRED different video cards. I had been obsessing about getting an imac or mac mini for quite a while, but all the threads about simple problems that any competent company could have discovered and fixed in a week have really turned me off. Sorry for venting.

P.S. Denominator, and as someone else said, you answered your own question: "Lock ups with the 4850 version" = it's the 4850!

Let me set the record straight. Windows has thousands of more problems that Apple will ever see. They crash daily all over the world. To me Windows is useless. If you love seeing your blue window called " The clue Screen of Death" More power to you. You stay with your windows. Me, I love my Apple. Since I switched from Windows to Mac back in 2005 I have not had any major problems at all. But up to then Windows after windows all their O/S failed me over and over again. I finally got fed up with it and moved to Apple.

If you don't want to make the move and are scared of a few problems, then you stay a windows user, and you will still see more problems than I ever will. Heck, you should be use to failure using windows, so why complain about Apple and say they are not working on the problem properly? Me i will never see that Blue Screen of Death anymore. :D

I am surprised to see you still defending Apple. Windows are quite stable these days. (Maybe I should move my other post over here) Not going into which OS is better debate, I am just saying that software/hardware causing crashes are totally expected among every single OS exists in the world. I recently just finished a project writing IM software, the program is already difficult to debug with thousands lines of code, don't even want to think if something wrong with OS. Don't forget the fact that it's so much easier task to do for Apple than for Microsoft. In mac, the hardware components are extreme limited to just a certain few, it make debugging much easier to do since you control the environment. Anyways, I like both Windows and OS X, just hope Apple would respond to this faster than they normally would. :(

Thanks for the reply. I do wish someone could convince me that there's a good explanation for these problems, but I just don't think there is.

What you miss in your defense of Apple is that they are in the very unique position of being a completely closed system. They make or hand-pick the hardware, and they write the software specifically for those configurations they've chosen. With a system like that, everything SHOULD "just work." There can be no excuse for them hand-picking hardware that DOESN'T work, or that doesn't work with their software!!

Windows is completely different. Microsoft puts out their OS for any manufacturer to make their own hardware and drivers. So yeah, some manufacturers might not be as good at that and there will be problems. But that's not Microsoft's fault at all. (How many "blue screens" are due to software rather than hardware I don't know, but of course some problems are Microsoft's fault as well.)

I guarantee if Microsoft put out a Zune where the hardware they chose didn't work in a decent percentage of units, everyone here would be all over their case with the exact argument I'm using against Apple. They probably wouldn't see the hypocrisy either.

Exactly my point and can't agree more.

Well I defend Apple because I like their computers and other equipment. Otherwise why would I buy them? Sure they are a bit slow at times getting things done, but every company is slow about things. Windows best O/S in my opinion is XP. It is the most stable but still has problems. Like you say every O/S has some sort of problem though usually minor.

I agree with you about wishing Apple would respond faster but I sort of understand too with all the mass iMac shipments they sort of have their hands full. I am willing to wait to have Apple fix it when they can. They won't sit on it for long. At least I hope not.

Thanks for your comments. I can see where you are going with this and you may be right up to a point. Everyone has their own opinion of what they should be doing and not doing. Apple has it's hands full right now with all the mass shipments, working on 10.5.7 and now the 4850 lockups. I am sure they will handle it the best they can. Have Faith. ;)

spelling and anti apple sentiments aside, can someone with a working 4850 imac please post their card specs up?

thanks! :)

I've had my iMac 3.06 / 4850 for eight days now, no freezes (with lots of WoW). My system says:

"ATY,MemVendorID" = <0600>
"ATY,MemRevisionID" = <0200>

In other words, the same as yours (which has frozen).
