Yes and No. The 1st gen owners have enjoyed their iPad Pro's for a year and now get the chance to have all the latest refinements / tech (and extra storage). And they can sell the 1st gen to offset the price of the new Pro having gained a years usage out of it as a main computer. There is a chance 2nd gen owners won't upgrade next year.

But that's always the case for every new generation. No matter how little they change. You can always sell and upgrade.

Hmmm. I don’t want to come across as a debbie-downer, but keep in mind that you’re still paying for it no matter what. That is the danger of monthly payment plans. In other words, it’s still the same money going out the door.

Don’t get me wrong, if you just want it and can afford it, don’t hesitate and don’t look back! But if money is a concern, then it might be best to take a closer look to see if it is really worth it to you.

Cheers!

Oh I totally understand - it's just that there won't really be an out of pocket cost, and since I'm currently paying for one, the monthly cost won't increase either.

This is our compromise for my living somewhere where I'm unable to have wifi or other internet and can only use LTE.

John Gruber was really talking up the 120Hz refresh rate but I have my doubts that it's worth spending $300 to upgrade for that and the Tru Tone Display. If I do get a new IPP I would sell my 12.9" gen 1 and get the new 10.5" but I think that I'll wait for iOS 11 before I decide.

Yeah I'm afraid of going smaller. I use my iPP every day. It's replaced my Mac completely. As much as I love the portability factor of the 10.5, I think I'm going to have to stick with the 12.9.
Truetone, ProMotion, A10X which Apple has drastically undersold READ its makes the old Pro look weak

What on the new iPad Pro makes it worth it for you to upgrade from the 1st gen to the 2nd? I have been trying to reason with myself that keeping the 1st gen is a good idea, since I think I've at least decided downsizing to a 10.5 is NOT a good idea (for me anyway), but now I am thinking I really want the new one dangit.

What about the new one is really worth the upgrade? I have a 128 gb now, and don't know that I'd need 512 gb, so I'm not sure that can really factor into my decision.

If you're going from a 1st gen to 2nd gen, why?

Probably for
Accumulative effect for an upgrade from version 1, to version 2.....

1. 120 Hz
2. CPU
3. Camera (Both front and rear)
4. Gen 2 Touch ID
5. TrueTone
6. 600 nit screen
7. More storage than before

And everything else below.

https://www.apple.com/ipad/compare/

This is very suspicious taken directly from your Apple link. So the A10X is 2.5x faster than the A8 so how much faster is it compared to the A9X, odd how Apple is hiding behind this ?

Compared to A8:

CPU: 2.5x faster

Graphics: 4.3x faster

A9 third-generation chip with 64-bit desktop-class architecture

Compared to A8:

CPU: 1.6x faster

Graphics: 1.8x faster

A8 second-generation chip with 64-bit desktop-class architecture

Embedded M10 coprocessor

I think you really need to answer this question for yourself, as it all depends on your needs. For me the 120hz refresh, true tone, HDR and storage up to 512gb seals the deal for me. My wife will get my current 12.9, and I will upgrade to the IPP2 512gb model.

They specifically mentioned it in the keynote.

A10X Compared to A9X:
CPU: 1.3x (+30%)
Graphics: 1.4x (+40%)

Extrapolating from this:

A9X Compared to A8:
CPU: 1.9x
Graphics: 3.1x

While I haven't owned the 12.9 first generation, I compared all surrent iPADs and - wanting to use my next iPAD for photography, I wpiöd want to have an iPAD with the latest screen tech. Like lower reflectance and truetone. While the difference towards the 12.9 gen1 is not huge, it is yet visible, the 9.7pro (which was the newest I saw) has just the best screen, and I guess the new ones have the same tech + 120Hz.
I personally wouldn't loose a minute of thought about cpu speed, the older ones were already fast. But that's just me.

My main question now being 10.5 or 12.9. I will wait until both are in the Apple store here (Berlin) and try to decide intuitively. Rational reasons rarely work in real life for me, I have to decide "from the belly": My head would want the 12.9, but I guess I find it too big and heavy. Not a very good 1- hand device, whereas the 10.5 is...

I am just going to see if the A10X and what I hear from here of a Lightning port that actually supports USB 3 will be sufficient to resolve the dropped frames issue I am seeing with the Lightning Digital AV adapter

I think the deciphering factor for both the 10.5 and 12.9 really comes down to the size. All the other features and advantages are there between the devices, the size is everything depending on how you plan on using it and what you plan on using it for.

Similar situation. My wife gets the current 12.9 iPP and I'll get the new one. 256GB will be plenty for me. I use the iPad for technical presentations and note taking and sketching. The better display, better use of Pencil and faster CPU all sound great. They didn't mention it but I'll guess that the speakers improved slightly as well.

Until now I always got the LTE version. The next one will be WiFi only. The personal hotspot feature of the iPhone works better than in years past, public WiFi is getting a little better, and I won't be traveling so much. This saves on the purchase orice and I won't need the monthly plan for the iPad.

Yeah, but what exactly do you want to do with these speed increments? These are mainly fictional benefits since there is no App/Game utilizing it up to the edge. Yes, speed increments makes sense over a longer period, but today and probably the whole 2017/18 there will be no reason to buy a new iPad because of its speed increments.
Even the new Affinity Photo App works great with iPad Air 2. App and Game developers usually don't cut off their user base by supporting just the newest device generation, they would be stupid by doing this, and sell less of their App.

Considering a used 12.9" Pro w/ Keyboard and Pencil for $550, or the new 10.5" Pro... This thread seems to suggest that (besides refresh and TT Display) the older 12.9" Pro holds up, so maybe for the savings it's worth it.

Go for it! The screen is amazing and a big jump from your iPad Pro 12.9. Also now the speed difference is huge, the new 12.9 is 2 x as fast in the compute speed tests, that will be significantly quicker and will mean that work gets done even faster. Also the refresh rate that everyone is going on about is a very big upgrade especially if you do a lot of typing and reading on your Pro, which you do. Much Faster Touch ID is a Cherry on the top, and true tone will also make the screen allot less harsh and damaging to your eyes in the long term. The camera is now the same camera in the iPhone 7, which means even clearer document scanning and much better FaceTime and Skype calling.

You will be smiling all the way with the new iPad Pro 12.9. And don't forget the next iPad Pro will likely be in 1.5 years time, so if you are going to buy do it now so that you can enjoy have the best possible experience for as long as possible.

P.s LTE is also faster with the new Pro!

512 Gb.
In the last 6 months I've found myself deleting Apps/PDFs from the 128 iPad pro 12.9 in order to have enough space to install newer apps or even update iOS...
I'm using the iPad also for music ( lot of large sound samples, then ) but the biggest portion of space being used is PDF books/documents, about 70 GB.
I have really a lot of books, scanned & imported ( not by me ) in an unorthodox way, and they are generally 200/300 MB, so when I read "512 GB", I immediately sold a kidney, the old Pro, and here I am with the Gen 2 iPad Pro 12.9 WIFI/Cell waiting for me to be picked up this afternoon.

Ciao
A.

Graphics performance is a big thing for me despite only doing minor gaming.

I'm very sensitive to microstutters and lag in the UI. It appears most of that is due to the GPU performance. Note the following onscreen benchmarks.

For me, devices that do ~30 FPS in GFXBench 3.0 Manhattan (Onscreen) are okay but I can definitely notice the increased smoothness from devices that do ~60 FPS. My first thought when I set up my mom's iPhone SE was "Wow, this is smoother than my Pro 9.7." That said, average framerates aren't really the issue. It's just that the stronger GPU allows for higher minimum framerates.

I'm very much looking forward to ProMotion on the Pro 12.9. :) I'm just hoping I don't get spoiled by the 120Hz display that all of a sudden, I'd need to replace my perfectly working iPhone 7 and iPad Pro 9.7, too. :p

Having now tried 120fps on the 10.5 version it’s very difficult going back to my original gen 12.9!

For me, it's display, camera, and processor. This may very well be the last 12.9" released, so...

I personally think the new 12.9 offers a big upgrade over the original but that is still a great device - it already has a great screen and audio and the SOC and RAM adds to it's longevity.
The reason I'm upgrading is for the improved screen, upgraded camera and finally a storage bump. The release of Affinity Photo along with the upcoming iOS 11 changes mean I'll be using this new 12.9 as more of a workhorse in the house so the jump from 32GB to 256GB will be welcome.

The
The biggest reason to upgrade is the 120hz refresh rate. The last gen 12.9” had a more noticeable lag, especially when swiping left/right, or scrolling up/down. The 9.7” had it too, but it was harder to notice due to the smaller screen.

The new iPad pros are buttery smooth and everyone should upgrade to the latest versions

I just left the Apple Store with my new 12.9. I wasn't thinking of upgrading but after seeing the screen and speed I just had to do it. Screen is jaw dropping!

Well, mine JUST arrived via FedEx, so I'll be off to my daughter's in a bit to use her wifi to get my old one backed up and load up the new one! Can't wait!!
