My wife has my iPad Air 2 and it feels incredibly sluggish, even in basic tasks like web browsing and email compared to the Pro.

incredibly sluggish ? I guess it is all relative. I didn't experience that when comparing.

The only thing the iPad Pro's can do that the iPad Air 2 can't is the use of a pencil. So how does that make it a laptop replacement or a professional tablet in comparison to the iPad Air 2?

The keyboard that I use for the iPad Air 2 is even better than the ASK from the iPad Pro, so it's even worse for typing.

Sigh... and what makes your iPad Air airy?
Incredible that you couldn't find an answer for this on this forum when the product is what now - 2 years on the market?

maybe something to do with with it being lighter than previous ipads before the Air generation

the only thing the pro models can do over my air 2 is pencil

there is nothing that won't run on it and run well in the app store

Owning a Air 2 before my current 12.9 Pro(2017) ,I can field this question folks. What prevented my Air 2 from being a replacement from my Mid 2012 MacBook Pro was mainly the screen size, when your split viewing two things and trying to work the 9.7 inch screen is simply too small to work efficiently. The Pencil is also a big plus allowing me to digitize my notebooks for school. The new iPad Pro simply elevates the entire iPad experience to another level to the point were it really can replace the laptop for some people.
TLDR: The new iPad Pro is on another level performance wise compared to the Air 2, something that has been needed, you are finnaly seeing Mac app devs bringing their full apps to iOS with parity to MacOS and optimized for touch ui of iOS.

That's not true the newer apps definitely run smoother and quicker on the iPad Pro's compared to the iPad Air 2, please get your head out of the sand

of course they will run faster with a faster processor...its all relative on how fast do you need. All I said was everything in the app store runs just fine on Air 2. Show me something that doesn't and I'll kindly get my head out of the sand.

just fine vs faster/smoother , two different things, please get head out of @#$

From what I have hear Affintiy Photo doesnt run very well on the iPad Air 2, but they may have improved that since launch. I thought you were saying the Air 2 ran everything as well as the newer iPads did which isnt true, but yah for now at least the Air 2 still runs most apps but soon you will begin to probaly see app features entirely omitted from the Air 2 either because the CPU or GPU limitations compared to the Pro models.

Where does that leave the 2017 iPad? The air 2 multicore performance is on par with that.

That is true, I think like with the Macs, the iPad Air 2 and iPad will continue to receive support from iOS and apps alike albeit they will function a degree slower and overtime that performance gap will simply widen to the point were people would want to upgrade simply because the old one is too slow. Needless to say the next 2-3 years will be very interesting for the iPad.

THE ONLY THING PRODUCT X CAN DO THAT PRODUCT Y CAN NOT IS ITS KILLER FEATURE!

no one could ever have different needs to myself, they're just stupid

replace "romans" with "ipad pro" and that's how some of you sound...

apart from the 120hz screen, the true tone, the fast charging, the pencil support, the 4 speakers, the massively faster cpu, the more storage, the better cameras, the smart keyboard and the amazing battery life.... what has the ipad pro ever done for us??

You deserved to have the first post.

I find it quite paradoxical that a "pro user" would choose an iPad Pro to be more professional when it's really the more amateur'ish choice compared to using a workstation with m/kb support and a more unrestricted operation system. Currently you have to design your work life around the iPad Pro to really take advantage of it. It should be the other way around.

iOS11 will eventually make the iPad Pro more "pro". Until then it's just Apple marketing buzz to make it appear like a better value proposition than it actually is.

Is that not how generational shifts work?

First you try to force the new tool to fit the old workflow, and then the new tool creates a new workflow. Both parts are painful and full of denial, but the new model is ultimately much better than the old.

I teach with my iPad in the classroom. Pray tell me what good mouse and keyboard support is when I am walking around the room with iPad in hand? And I prefer the simplicity and fluidity of iOS compared to a more bloated and cumbersome desktop OS. I was writing on PDFs in notability using my finger long before the Apple Pencil came out, but there's no denying the pencil has made a very significant improvement in the whole writing experience.

So yes, I agree with the user that the onus is ultimately on the user to make the device pro. That you find it paradoxical says more about you than it does about the people who are using their iPad meaningfully in their everyday lives.

The price, everything else is just peripherials (sp) which cost an additional fortune.

Screen, space, speed are just a natural evolution of hardware but by calling it "Pro" they were able to maintain the price point of an iPad using old hardware while making the "new one" more expensive. Pretty smart move from a business standpoint to be honest.

If you're an illustrator, photo editor or someone who creates vector graphics - the Pencil makes iPad Pro a leapfrog product. When people say things like "the only thing the iPad Pros are better at is the Pencil", I answer with: it's enough, believe me.

I can't draw on iPad Air - while the Pro is the best drawing device on the market. I can't precisely edit photos on Air, while the Pro is great for that.

Also, the Smart Keyboard is good, at least I like it. When I need to do office stuff, I attach it and iPad Pro is almost as good as a MacBook.

Compared to your iPad Air:
Better screen
fast refresh rate and performance
faster cpu
faster storage
more ram
works with the pencil
larger display options
multitasking is faster and in iOS 11 is vastly improved.

So, yeah, if you want to use a tablet for work it is head and shoulders above the Air 2.

So, I agree with everything you said except your conclusion because there are lots of people using non-Pro iPads in their day to day work that would not see much benefit from the Pro features. For example, most office jockeys do not draw or use illustrator apps. It just depends on the individual's workflow. Likewise, I am sure there are some folks that make frequent use of the Pencil and Smart Keyboard, so the cost premium for the Pro plus accessories is worth it to these people.

I really don't care if Apple uses the "Pro" moniker to differentiate their product line, but people shouldn't be bamboozeled into the belief that they can't do real work on a standard iPad just because it lacks this moniker. That's just ridiculous. Most of the user experiences is driven by the operating system, and both Pro and standard iPad models use the same OS.

The price and name. What makes something "sporty" it's those pesky marketers again...
What makes the rMB pro?

My iPad Pro doesn't do anything faster of better than any other device. The screen refresh is nicer, some will mention 4 speaks, but I don't use them, pen support I don't use either.

Just because you dont use a feature doesn’t mean it doesn’t deserve the ‘Pro’ moniker. It just means you don’t need the features personally.

There is no such thing as a silly question...

Whats TLDR

I didn’t say you couldn’t work the same on them, I said the performance is massively better on the pro. Especially the 2nd gen pro models. My wife has my iPad Air 2 and it feels incredibly sluggish, even in basic tasks like web browsing and email compared to the Pro.

Be it my G2 12.9, the 10.5 or the Air I'm not able to detrimentally determine any difference between them in the performance arena. Both the pros are more fluid without question, but that's the refresh rate on the screens.

And the MacBook Pro can hardly do anything more than a regular MacBook. So what. How is this news? These are just marketing terms, something to name the product after that helps create a nice feeling for the buyer. And years old ideas at that too.

Like Apple's laptop line, the "pro" moniker is mostly a marketing vehicle to drive sales. Yet with that said the IPP offers a couple of benefits that the non-pro iPad doesn't. First it has more ram, so multitasking or demanding apps work more efficiently. Typically the iPad Pro offers a faster processor as well, and finally stylus support. The non-pro iPads still don't have this. That last feature really doesn't mean much to me (As a non-creatative user), but I like the fact that I can multitask some demanding apps, like office apps.
Well yeah that and it's just like a marketing code word for "this is our flagship super nice iPad. The best version we've got". It's a good separator between it and just the regular cheapo "ipad". I mean...I guess they could have named it "iPad with keyboard port, Pencil and other stuff", but "Pro" rolls off the tongue a bit better

Many good replyes, but how about color management? I have tested a number of 10.5 Pro iPads, they all have the same very blue display with true tone OFF, with on the had a very yellowish tone...booth setting useless for photo editing. Guess they need a proper white point setting function to be called Pro!!

Given I have 2 of the new IPPs, one 10.5 and one 12.9G2, i must be more professional than everyone else.
I will have to email HR later for an increase to my salary... I'm feeling I'm all superior and 20% better!
Whyyy do you have two? Just to make me jealous?

Lol. no i got the 10.5 first as i preferred that size, but one of the kids iPads died so he claimed that.
When i went back to my local apple store the 10.5s where out of stock so i ended up with a 12.9
