Just finished Up. Maybe I expected too much and got spoilt by all these beautiful animated and beautifully told stories from Studio Ghibli I recently visited, but that was one seriously shallow movie!
Kind of sad as the initial setting had huge potential. What a disappointment.

J. Edgar (HBO On Demand)- ehh. Historical, but not enjoyable to watch. Seems like everyone he did not like was a communist anarchist. I can't imagine this movie being a hit. Leonardo was prettier than J.Edgar. ;)

Why did you think it was shallow?

Because all the characters were very one dimensional and cardboard types, and they stayed just that: mere characters and never developed into any interesting personae, in my opinion.
And having an old grumpy man as the main character in a mainstream (kids-) movie as a differential plus a nice effect with the balloons is fine, but ain't enough either. That's where it starts, but it seemed like that was already the end ideas-wise, hence the introduction of that kind of Indy Jones action-adventure which didn't feel right (and made all the serious stuff it introduced before seem gimmickly). And what was that with all these dogs anyway? More like an accidental patchwork than a consistent story.

For an animated fantastic journey I'd highly recommend Princess Mononoke or Kiki's Delivery Service (really beautiful movie, also suitable for little children - still very enjoyable for grown-ups) or maybe Spirited Away instead of Up. But I'm not that fluent with all the other Pixars - Finding Nemo is said to be good, but that's coming most probably from the same people which praise Up so much - which has an incredible rating at imdb i've to say.

I picked up the Tim Burton Collection, and I'm rewatching them in chronological order. Pee-Wee's Big Adventure was first, strangely I felt that I wouldn't really enjoy this as an adult, but I watched it and I can honestly say I enjoyed it more now (that I get all the jokes) than I ever did as a kid. Watched Beetlejuice last night, and it still has to be one of my favorite movies. Next on the list will be Batman, I struggle to make it through this movie, it's just too hokey and I've been spoilt by Nolan's movies.

I cannot wait for the Tarantino XX Collection to come out in November.

Right now friends and I are watching at least one horror film a day for the month of October, tonight's movie; Martyrs.

Finally watched Prometheus and really liked it a lot- much more than I thought I would.

I love Prometheus, I rewatched the Alien Anthology when I picked up Prometheus.

It really puts all the other films in a whole new perspective- good stuff.

Ridley Scott is talking about doing two Prometheus sequels. I just hope that James Cameron stays away from them. While Aliens was fun, it felt nothing like Alien, he turned a Gothic Sci-Fi Horror, into a generic action movie.

Good to read some really positive feedback about it here - well, Huntn is going to see it for the third time (if I counted right) without being sure how to feel about it....so yeah, looking pretty forward seeing it this weekend!

And Beetlejuice was a keeper when released (as was Batman, Jack Nicholson made a great Joker), although it can be dangerous to re-visit ones childhood 'dreams' I guess. I've to admit though that Burtons last movies didn't impress me much.

Not sure if there's a tv show thread but I've been on a series binge lately. I've never seen dexter and just finished season 2 with the rest still to come. I'm also currently watching homeland, which is amazing. I watched the pilot episode of MTV's underemployed, which was alright, but I'll reserve judgement until I see episode two later on. It has potential but who knows. If MTV is going to give up on it like they do with everything not called jersey shore and real world then there probably isn't much sense in getting attached.

...so I watched The Vow today. I knew what kind of movie it would be, but it's been a while since I've seen something with Rachel McAdams in it :p

As expected, a mediocre movie but yeah I think I love Rachel McAdams.

Argo- About sneaking 6 U.S. Embassy employees out of Iran during the hostage crisis. Not a movie I'd normally choose to see in the theater, but it was surprisingly good. It has moments of elevated tension, not what I'd call a thriller, and I wondered if it was accurately portrayed, if some of the timing was notched up to raise tension. Anyway, a thumbs up!

Most interesting is the brief 2 minute history of Iran at the beginning, which seems to be pertinent today. Western powers and oil companies have been in there from the start with their fingers in the pie, and involved with regime change. Those entities, including the U.S. are not blameless for today's tension IMO. BTW, this is not an anti-U.S. movie. It just shows the events, I presume in close proximity to how they happened.

I just started watching Dexter. What did you think of it?

Kurosawa's Rashomon. Shrink, I'd guess you know this one as it's really old and from the 50s. :D ;) Masterful movie and featuring maybe one of the most honest 'samurai' fights I've seen. Shaking hands.

Was rather surprised by 'Seeking a Friend for the End of the World'. While the beginning of the film felt rather clumsy, the end was rather good. Much more emotional than I was expecting.

Definitely worth a rent if you're on the fence.

I love the old Twilight Zone's. To Serve Man and It's A Good Life (Billy Mumy) are a couple of favorites

Oh yeah! Watching them on Netflix. Now I just started watching the old B&W shows of Dark Shadows which I noticed at the bottom of the Netflix screen. Love that show too.
