Well I recently watched Dead Fall by Eric Ban and etc., a thriller that follows two siblings(eric bana and Olivia wilde) who decide to fend for themselves in the wake of a botched casino heist, and their unlikely reunion during another family's Thanksgiving celebration.

It may just be me but I found this movie stupid.

I saw 3 movies in the last 2 weeks: Hobbit, Les Miz, Django Unchained.

The Hobbit was good, but I saw it in HFR+3D, and the effect was so distracting and cheapening. At times I felt like I was watching a video game cutscene, and other times, I felt like I was watching a live performance. Apparently, Star Trek 2 will also have an HFR viewing, but so far, I'm not too fond of it. And I wish they didn't split the story into 3 parts. It's not that interesting of a plot to make it 9 hours long. All that said, the HFR made the 3D feel immersive, and for the first time, I was really impressed with the 3D (probably because of the HFR).

Les Miz was well done, but some of the singing was a bit too much.

Django Unchained was great. I had no expectations going into this (I had seen one trailer a while ago, and so I forgot what it was supposed to be about). Some parts were corny and overdone, but its as expected from a Tarantino film (think Kill Bill Vol 1).

I'm currently coming up on the 45 minute mark of 1946 "Night and Day", and am about to switch channels.

Supposedly the life of Cole Porter. What one can say of the films accurate depiction of his life...there was a man named Cole Porter, and he wrote some music. Everything else in the film is absolute and total b***sh**.

I have been giving it another chance, and it is just so terrible I can't stay with it.

To those who enjoy totally fictionalized biographies...stay away from this one...it's intensely awful, even for a pretty awful genre.

I forgot to post that I saw Lincoln last week. I must say the ensemble cast of Daniel Day-Lewis, Sally Field, Tommy Lee Jones, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, James Spader, et al were really good. For me personally the movie was both inspiring and discouraging at the same time. Our country has come a long way in some respects and it's amazing how events transpired.

This is one movie I am really looking forward to having the opportunity of seeing. Actually, when I was a kid, Lincoln was one of my heroes. My dad had several books about the American Civil War, and bought me a biography of Lincoln (all of which I devoured). Reviews have been uniformly excellent, and I understand that the movie has been made with an attention to detail and a respect for historical sources (and accuracy) that is commendable.

Yes, well, I'm also looking forward to when this is released in Europe; again, it got some excellent reviews from reviewers whose work I respect.

Uh oh, so which one didn't you love?

I'm pretty good about dealing with how much the XMen movies differ from the comics as far as relationships, things like Xavier and Magneto being buddies, no problem. ;)
However, I was disappointed in XMen3, the way the Dark Phoenix Saga was glossed over. This could have been a great couple of movies that were short changed. Note, this was when the director Bryan Singer left the franchise.

And no love for XMen First Class. Some outstanding visuals, but it just did not click for me. As far as I know, Mystique was never Xavier's friend either, but no big deal. I felt it was missing the type of character development that was present in XMen Origins:Wolverine. Which combined with the first two XMen movies does an excellent job of telling the relative complete story of a single XMan (Wolverine). I'm convinced only Hugh Jackman and such a compelling XMan character such as Wolverine could have pulled this off. Dark Phoenix could have been just as good, but in the movies, they buggered her part of the story severely. :)

I just watched the new Total Recall. I had mixed feelings about it, the production values were excellent, but the altering of the story to take place entirely on Earth didn't sit all that well with me. Colin Farrell, as much as I love Arnold, was slightly better in the lead role, but also sucked the humour out of the movie. I think I still slightly prefer the original.

Agreed. In many cases CGI overload also diminishes the story. My primary exception is Avatar, a completely natural CGI world. ;)

I rented Looper from Redbox last night. I really enjoyed it.

On my list to rent.

I'm trying to remember what the deal was, something in the plot that was reversed from the book about the replicants. I might watch this again.

Yes, indeed. I know where you are coming from. When I saw the movie (not the full version), I hadn't read the book, (which was hugely admired and recommended by friends). Nevertheless, a very interesting movie, and a great soundtrack..

I just watched Skyfall, and I enjoyed it for the most part. It was less like a typical Bond movie, but something deeper and darker, and much better story-wise than QoS. But Javier Bardem's character was a weirdo. I don't like how villains who were meant to be evil and menacing end up looking/sounding comical (ie Bane).

Just watched Blade Runner (2007) on BBC iPlayer... bloody great!

Really wondering what you're talking about; you mean Blade Runner: Deleted and Alternate Scenes from 2007?? Never heard about it before, but sounds really interesting and I think I have to get that! Although quite unsure if you meant this one....

Gotcha. I had forgotten that I was also disappointed by XMen3. The only reason I liked XMen First Class was that it had been long enough since seeing any of the other films that I watched this one on it's own merits, and thought it was okay, kind of the way The Dark Knight trilogy is entirely different from the previous Batman movies.

Good stuff. Now I need to see V and VI :)

I don't know how I'd react to seeing Star Wars for the first time now, as opposed to 1977, when I saw it for the first time. The special effects - fleets of ships crisscrossing through space, strange worlds, alien beings, were so different from anything I'd seen before, including on Star Trek. These days, they're commonplace.

I also wonder about 2001: A Space Odyssey, which was groundbreaking in its time. I recall being mesmerized by the final part where Bowman goes through the star gate. From today's perspective, though, some of that sequence, especially the false color terrain flyover, looks cheesy.

That doesn't detract from the greatness of either movie, however. And Star Wars episodes I-III showed that improved special effects aren't a substitute for story and acting.

The Dark Knight trilogy makes what came before it look childish imo. The difference between Heath Ledger's and Jack Nicolson's Jokers are astounding. :)
