Watched Dillinger ('77) yesterday. very well made b-movie with a lot of rat-tat-tat-tat and funny honking cars (?). Good cast, features the great Harry Dean Stanton...

...and, since I order all my movies from the UK: got a Bluray of Lawrence from Arabia with an included digital copy ( sony UV thingy) which I apparently can't use. So if someone is interested, must be 18+ and living in the Uk though, please PM me and I'll send you the code. First come, first served. :)

Earlier today: Battlestar Galactica: The Plan

I'm working my way through BG on Netflix... :):)

Tower Heist- an incredibly crappy comedy, filled with profanity and lewd sexual references (I'm not a prude ;)) in an attempt to make you overlook what a terribly weak, unbelievable, and unfunny story this is. I have loved Ben Stiller in some of his efforts- (Something About Mary, Mystery Men), but this title really makes we wary of his future projects. I heard The Watch was bad too.

If I have not said this all ready: Ice Age Continental Drift- they should of quit while they were ahead.

And Rio- not a bad movie. I might watch it again.

RE:Hobbit

As for one book and one movie, they are putting as much detail from the book into the movie. I found it slow as well, but that is what the wife told me since she has read the book.

Actually, they're not. I listened to a Peter Jackson interview, and he's lifted 100 pages of appendices from the LOTR books (mostly history and back-story) to fill out The Hobbit. It's extra material that was never intended to be in The Hobbit itself.

Either Peter Jackson is a geek who's just gone too far on the detail, or it's a cynical studio move to rinse the last amount of cash out of this franchise... either way, most of the reviews I've seen are saying this is way too long.

----

This afternoon I saw 'Life of Pi'

It's a pretty faithful re-telling of the book, and done with style and enthusiasm. It could have done with loosing 15 minutes in the edit, but the storytelling and character development were good, the casting was excellent and the 3D wasn't too distracting.

I'd recommend it.

Oh, I don't know then. The wife was happy because they had her favorite parts, especially the riddles.

Life of Pi looks good, but I'm afraid I wouldn't be in the mood for it.

I heard/read that too, but I rarely put much faith in reviewers. E.g. Ebert has the potential to be objective, but he can have an axe-to-grind attitude when gets over-political too (see his Kick Ass review). Reviewers are guides only, and that's my only rule :p

I found Hobbit to be the perfect length, but I had no problem with the length of the LoTR movies either. And if anything, watching The Hobbit gave me even more appreciation for the LoTR trilogy.

That said, I watched Django on Saturday. An incredible piece by Tarantino, and essentially delivered even more than I was expecting. Waltz/Foxx have great chemistry on-screen, and if you loved Waltz in Inglourious Bastards, you'll love him in Django as well.

That's where I watched it too. Although, last time I looked, two movies are not on Netflix. Razor and The Plan. I got them via iTunes.

Next up tonight, Star Trek III: The Search for Spock.

Is 'The Search for Spock' any good? Does it stand the test of time? My recollection is that Spock hardly featured in it (until close to the end of the movie) - however, I remember that I liked Star Trek IV when I saw it.

I liked all the Star Trek movies and I thought the Search For Spock was just as good as the Wrath of Khan.

I think I have disliked just about every Star Trek movie except the most recent (2009) which stands head and shoulders above what preceded it. My favorite Star Trek show is Next Generation.

I saw the 2009 Star Trek movie and thought it was very good but have not seen most of the earlier ones. My sense is that many of the individual episodes - especially some of the two-parters of TNG - were a lot better than most of the TNG movies. Likewise, I am given to understand that the 'original' Star Trek movies were rather uneven, some good, some pretty poor. I saw IV and VI and thought them pretty good - but again, some of the really good episodes in the original series ('City on the Edge of Forever' and a few others) easily surpassed them for quality.

And yes, I agree completely re TNG - I was captivated by it when it was broadcast, and thought it excellent, the best series of the Star Trek franchise.

Thanks for your reply; my brother says much the same, and thought the Wrath of Khan was pretty good.

I also liked the newest Star Trek movie as well. It took me a long time to warm up to TNG when it first aired, but it grew on me and I like it now too. But the original series and cast are my favorites. All Star Trek series after TNG stunk IMO.

Ah. So you recommend the forthcoming Star Trek movie as well? (I was very impressed by Zachary Quinto, but then, Mr Spock was my favourite character by far in the original series).

Agreed that the post TNG universe was nothing like as good as TNG and some of the original series. Mind you, there are those (such as young cousins of mine) who swear by the later episodes of DSN, but I had abandoned that particular ship long before we got to the Dominion War, so I missed what many seem to think were the best bits. To be honest, I simply couldn't stand 'Enterprise' and 'Voyager' didn't really work either, to my mind.

Actually, I don't know anything about the forthcoming movie. I hope it's good though.

I became glued to the Star Trek Show that came out when I was in Jr. High. I believe many people considered it cutting edge for the time. Now it is sadly dated. Years later, I just happened to stumble across Next Generation and was intrigued. Great setting, characters, and writing. I loved the Borg episodes, the one where a virus caused all the crew members to regress into their primitive ancestors, and many more, but if forced to make a choice, it would be the series final: All Good Things... loved it.

I watched District 9 again last night. What a great movie! I'm hoping they do a sequel soon..

A great example of how to make an outstanding movie on a limited budget! :)

I saw the Hobbit in IMAX 3D yesterday and it had an exclusive IMAX trailer for the new Star Trek movie. It was seriously like 10 minutes long. Hands down the longest trailer I have ever seen. I must say it looks really great. I think the current Star Trek reboot is going to give us some really good movies.

I thought the Hobbit was awesome. Jackson is definitely putting together another epic series. I didn't think it was too long or slow. In my opinion great fantasy tales with an ensemble of characters require a good bit of character development. You just can't rush stories like that.

Thanks very much and that's good to know. I really liked the 2009 Star Trek movie, and now will happily anticipate the next installment of this series.

Other movies I have an eye out for include the just recently released (in the US, but not, alas, in Europe yet) Lincoln - who my hero when I was a kid (I devoured biographies of the man), and which is supposed to be excellent, and faithful to the historical sources - and Django Unchained, which has received excellent reviews this side of the Atlantic.

(I know, I know. We are all allowed a few secret vices, and one of mine is good spaghetti westerns and I must say I also rather like most of Tarantino's work; something which promises a compelling fusion of the two is, for me, almost irresistible).

Still debating to see the Hobbit in the theater.
