Alien³ - Assembly Cut

The theatrical release of Alien³ is a prime example of studio & executive interference. Bottom line is the studio wanted a big payday, laughingly set a release date without a solid plan, finally brought onboard a young promising director to push about. Result was basically a mess...
The Assembly Cut attempts to reconstruct David Fincher's workprint (which the studio balked at), but goes a lot further; adding colour correction, additional special effects, remixed 5.1 sound, restored multiple scenes. The DVD release suffered from from poor on-set audio quality. The later Blu-ray corrects this, creating a soundtrack of more consistent quality and making the addition of deleted scenes seamless.
I get a lot of people were unhappy that Newt & Hicks were killed off screen, however for the film to work this was necessary. Ripely had to be put into a state of loss & isolation to the point of being vulnerable. This brought Alien back to it's roots in horror as opposed to Cameron's more action focused theme.
If your going to watch Alien³ the Assembly Cut is the version to watch is a very different film compared to the weak theatrical release. If you have only ever watched the theatrical release, then the Assembly Cut is a must...
