I don't know about high and low density RAM, but both the Crucial and OWC RAMs are single-ranked.

The Crucial 2017 5k iMac-certified RAM is single rank but OWC's is dual rank for the 16GB and larger DIMMS and single rank for the 4GB and 8GB modules.

The Hynix 4GB module revealed in the iFixit teardown of the 21-inch 2017 iMac is single rank but if Apple is using the same Hynix RAM for the 16GB and larger DIMMS, those parts are dual rank according to the spec sheets.

I don't think the rank has any relevance whatsoever. The density might not either, but it has in the past.

I am going to run the new machine through some serious memory testing with the Ballistix upon its arrival and will report my results.

Edit: You're referring to the spec sheet for the Hynix RAM from the teardown, right? Starting to think I should just be patient and wait to see what Apple sends people who ordered 8GB modules. I can live with 8GB total RAM for a few days!

Yes, that is from the spec sheet for the Hynix revealed in the teardown. It is similar to the OWC, single rank in 4GB and 8GB and dual in 16GB. This is assuming Apple is using the same model for the larger configurations. Apple is known to use several different makes and models of RAM in the same machines depending on the place and time of manufacture.

Really, though, I don't think that the rank is going to be a factor in compatibility.

Does anyone know if there is any difference in the order you place RAM, other than that they should be in matched pairs?

I.e. should I go with 4GB, 4GB, 16GB, 16GB, or 16GB, 16GB, 4GB, 4GB?

Probably not but for my own peace of mind, I put the highest capacity ones in the main slots.

But I think you should cross-place them like 16GB 4GB 16GB 4GB. Anyone please correct me if i'm wrong.

That's how Apple does it with the base RAM as well, they are in slot 1 and 3.

I don't think this matters at all.

Based on previous iMacs, I would imagine that you don't criss cross them. I would just drop the two new modules into the two empty slots. The good news is that if you screw it up, the OS should tell you.

So I still got the best price ($216) and high quality memory.
Looks good. Please post your experience after installing them in the new 2017 iMac. Thank you.

Crucial/Micron will list ALL parts that it does not specifically market for the iMac as "incompatible". That doesn't mean it won't work.
I can't confirm that claim but my suspicion is it's true and the manufacturer's attempt to increase revenue by isloating one specific DIMM as "compatible".

Talked to Crucial this morning. Not expecting the 16g(2 DIMM) or 32g(2 DIMM) kits in until late July at the earliest. :apple:
US or EU?
Ordered mine at crucial eu and they are ready to ship as of today.

Spoke to them last week, they said they would be back in stock today and it seems they are. 16GB Kit(2x8GB)

Edit: just got a tracking number. From UK to the Netherlands btw.

Can someone explain the differences -

http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/ct2k16g4sfd824a (standard - dual ranked)

http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/ct2k16g4s24am (for mac - single ranked, lead free, halogen free)

What does this actually mean - and what does it mean for compatibility and performance? Apple doesn't specify single or dual ranking as a requirement. Some say it doesn't matter - so why is Crucial creating a new model specifically with this difference? I assume iMacs are shipping with single rank?

So when he says that HyperX ram works - is that an absolute confirmation it's a safe option, or is there still potential for issues down the line - kernel panics or crashes? I suspect most ram will 'work', my concern is long term stability. I'm trying to figure why Crucial has a specific model 'for mac', or if generic models are truly just as good once we know the system will recognize it.
