iPhone 8/Plus What some reasons the iPhone 8 Plus is better than the X?

I went 8Plus as my main, replacing the 6s plus. It does feel like an upgrade. I still have a work 6 plus.

I can get an iphone X Unlocked from work for around €200 and was all ready for a new form factor. The leaked iphone X images before launch I hoped were fake but turned out completely accurate. The X looks like a toy phone and you have to put up with it. Gestures are an annoying feature.

Iphone 8 Plus might not be exciting but its a solid phone.

Much better battery
Better screen aspect
Less likely to have issues being a tried and tested form factor
Dont need to grow more arms and fingers to use it

iPhone X is a compromise as is the iphone 8 Plus. iPhone X makes you work harder to use it, slower unlock, more potential for issues with OLED. iphone 8 Plus is an out dated design.

As you can tell I am not happy with Apple this year aftering having iphones since the very first one.

All depends how you use but it but for me the 8 Plus is working out better.

I returned my X and picked up a used 8 Plus for about half the price of my X ($600).

-Better battery life
-Wider screen
-Landscape orientation app options
-TouchID (use mine on my desk alot so FaceID wouldn't scan unless I tilted it towards me)
-No OLED flicker (less headaches for me personally)
-Is a better weapon (heavier/larger)

Perhaps one often overlooked pro of the 8 (or 8 Plus) over the X is that the form factor of the iPhone 8 (and 8 Plus) has been used for 3 previous generations. True, the form factor changed slightly with the addition of Qi capabilities, but nonetheless the form factor is there.

Hence, Apple has ironed out many of irks and quirks of this form factor which provides the most stable experience which is why many people find it dull.

Have you held or used an X? Toy phone? For me it looks much better than the iPhone 6-8. The gestures are easily the best part of the X for me, so fluid and natural to use. The 120hz touch input makes a big difference. Face ID works fast and reliably for me, by the time I go to use my phone, it's unlocked. Definitely no issues with OLED, looks great and was rated the best screen ever in a mobile device.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but everything you mention is just the opposite on my end. I have really enjoyed using the X. Best changes to an iPhone since 2007 for me.

My wife and I had years of Android. I had a work iPhone 4 for work, but that's all I'd ever used.

I got an X and an apple watch for my wife and I planned to wait for the X plus in the fall. I couldn't wait, so I sold my s8+ and got an 8 plus and a watch. I told myself I'd replace it in September with an X plus, but this phone is so good I may be set for 2-3 years, assuming it's not throttled and the X plus doesn't have something groundbreaking. Band 71 is important to me, so I'd probably upgrade for that. All in all, it's perfect.

I thought the X had a slightly bigger battery 2716mah vs. 2675mah


the battery life on my X has been absolutely amazing and I am a heavy user... social media, videos, music, lots of messages throughout the day. I take my phone off the charger around 6am and when i put it back on around 11pm I usually still have between 20-40% battery left. I've never had to charge it during the day.

No, 8 Plus has slightly bigger battery capacity and a bit better battery life compared to the X.

It's well known the 8 plus has better battery life due to the smaller and less pixel dense LCD. Oled is

X is 2716
8 plus is 2691

8 plus does a bit better due to lower resolution and less pixel dense.

It's definitely the best battery life I've ever had on an iPhone. I am a heavy user as well and only on a couple of occasions have I drained the battery to 20%.

Yes I have used an X and it feels like a downgrade and compromise coming from a plus model.

Its a decent upgrade from a 5s or a 6 as you get the better battery, slightly bigger screen, upgraded internals but coming from a plus with that terrible screen ratio on the X is a major downgrade. I lol'd at videos. I also dont like browsing the web. That home bar is irritating and again gestures suck for me unfortunately.

I have not used the X for a week but I only shave once a week so by the end of the week it probably wont recognize me any more?? :D

I guess to each their own. I came from a 7 Plus and I love it. You would have no issue with shaving as it learns your face. I am assuming you'll be moving on from Apple then or just staying with older models? All X and X Plus next year will have all of the same things you don't like.

I don’t think the resolution makes as much of a difference as the screen technologies does. I’d expect the X to be better in terms of overall battery performance because the OLED screen would use way less battery than the LCD.

Too early to say. This 8 Plus is a decent device. Problem is I dislike Android devices far more!

I'd say more pixels to push + FaceID scanning probably takes up more battery than TouchID.

After the flooding in downtown Boston last week, I have decided that an 8 Plus is the way to go.

In an emergency, I could use it as a paddle board. But I would need to find a trailer for it.

On a more serious note, there's a lot of panic, even hysteria, about the X and the possible future for the iPhone. I think this is all very premature. When we think about how much the iPhone has evolved in ten years, I really don't think that being seriously discontent about the X has to have any predictive value for how you'll feel about an X-successor a year or two years from now. The one thing we know for certain is that tech and features are anything but static.

Yes but I was very excited about touch ID and not needing a password! Face ID is less useful for me as my phone is mostly on a desk all day so I dont want to have to lift it, from a tech front Face ID is technically a major upgrade and leaves iphone years ahead of Android for this. I get that and respect them for making the tech. However from my use case its less convenient unfortunately.

Saying that the bump for the camera has gotten a bit worse for this use but not terrible.

That is one we can certainly agree and I think is the main advantage of the 8 Plus if you watch much video on your phone. Personally, that does not worry me, as I prefer to view on my iPad anyway.

I was worried initially I would find the X screen too narrow, but I am happy with my choice. But if you use keyboard to write a lot on your phone, then I can understand preferring the wider Plus.

Face ID against Touch ID is personal preference and neither is better than the other - although I do like the X gestures, particularly being able to easily move to the previous App by sliding across the bottom.

For battery life, the X is the best of any iPhone I have had. But my main reason for getting the X was the better 2x camera with optical image stabilisation.

Everyone get what suits your uses most. One phone is not better than the other. Both the 8 Plus and X are excellent phones and we are lucky to have such a choice. it is what best fulfils your personal requirements.

This is true, though mostly I watch videos on an iPad or larger (TV, anyone? ;) ) device. Having said that, it looks like the ~2:1 aspect ratio display is becoming more common for phones.

Agree. I've been told dismissively here that using a phone on a desk is a very narrow niche use. I don't know if that's true or not - I doubt it. Either way, having to pick up the phone to unlock it was an annoyance compared to TouchID.

I share some of your thoughts here as well. I was horribly disappointed when I saw the X really was delivered with that notch, narrow screen, lack of touch ID, all those round lines, etc. I had my 6S+ for two years at that point, and wanted an upgrade so bad. Ultimately I bought the 8+, which I really like, but at the same time wanted a OLED and larger screen. I know some people like the X, but it is an unmitigated disaster in my opinion.
 
People say that the 8 Plus is too big, but it’s my first plus sized phone and it seriously only took a day to feel perfectly natural to me. Now the non Plus iPhones, including the X, actually seem too small. I know that the X’s display is larger on paper, but I’ve actually held them and used them side by side and the wider display of the Plus definitely feels bigger and displays more content.

That, combined with a home button and TouchID, and a larger battery make the Plus a superior phone for my personal preferences. The fact that it also costs less is icing on the cake. I still would have chosen it if they were priced the same.
