1080p that's all I want and life will be good :)

Having only a 32" TV and no sound system, the only things on my wish list are decent streaming services available in my country, such as Netflix and Hulu+.

1080p and live TV service
But I don't think I will upgrade to the ATV 3, as now the ATV 2 works fine for my family, in the help of handbrake, it's a cool home media centre here ;)
if it's really attractive I will consider :D

The ATV3 will need to be a LOT better than the ATV2.

I've a ATV1 with CrystalHD card in it, running CrystalBuntu and it's pretty much perfect, it'll play everything I've thrown at it.

I also have a ATV2, Jailbroken, running XBMC. It won't play everything, and it's not as flexible as there's no analogue audio output. The ATV2 is sitting in a drawer, unused.

I'm not sure I'd be bothered with a ATV3, more likely I'd buy another ATV1 and put a CrystalHD card in that too.

Everyone is saying apps but I find it hard to believe apps wouldn't be available somehow on the appletv2 yes it would be better on the 3 but probably not enough for me to get another one. An ability to add a cable card for my service would make me think about it.

It'll be interesting if ATV3 has a huge premium on price and all of sudden people want to buy back ATV2.
The AppleTV2 is still a good product that offers AirSync with Mountain Lion and encourages iTunes sales so I'm betting on them keeping it around as the cheaper model and the ATV3 as the "One more thing".

ATV2: $79
-Same machine, no apps
-Mountain Lion AirPlay

ATV3: $149:
-A5 or A6, Limited Channel Apps (Similar to iPad. ABC, Hulu, CBS, HBOGo etc)
-New remote with Mic to activate Siri
-1080p

Given that Tim Cook just recommended buying the ATV2 a few days ago on the earnings call, if ATV3 is even announced, it will unlikely blow away ATV2. My guess is that ATV3 would support 1080p content, but otherwise be identical to ATV2. That would explain Tim's recommendation.

I'm not sure what would get me to upgrade. It's not 1080p, Siri or Angry Birds, but I think those would be good marketing points for Apple and would let them sell more aTVs.

Hulu, ABC, CBS, HBO and the like might get me to buy one.

I think I would really like it if the relationship of the aTV to iTunes was reversed. I'd like the aTV to allow attached or network storage, so that would contain all your content then serve it to all the computers in the house, instead of the other way around.

The current system makes for huge iTunes databases filling up computer hard drives and the awkward situation of having to buy something on a computer to watch it on your TV. It should also solve the current HDCP handshake issue that is preventing you from even buying some things through iTunes on computers without compliant HDCP.

What type files have they been ripped to? Are they original and how are you playing them?

I won't get into great detail, other than to say these are rips from Blu-Ray, and there's a whole thread I started somewhere in the AppleTV forum where myself and several others were discussing it. I've tried multiple formats, multiple bit-rates, etc. There are some movies that just don't play correctly, compared to the Roku which doesn't have an issue with the same exact files.

Movies like WALL-E for example, where there's a lot of detail and movement...the AppleTV just looks "jumpy" compared to the Roku. I'm hoping the addition of true 1080p playback will fix this.

1080p, and a limited app-store would be nice. Specifically, so the Plex app can come out of the shadows and be fully supported. I love the current iteration of Plex on the :apple:TV2, but imagine what the boys could do with a proper SDK for the platform. Regardless, I'm getting it Day 1 (along with iPad3).

1080p is the way, I can't think of anything else, apart from MAYBE adopting the new wifi standard, but since mine is hardwired anyway, It will have to be a deal I thrash out with my sales guy at Apple when buying my new ipad3.

IMHO Live Tv viewing is the only thing missing from the current device.
I'm really hoping for a more powerful processor that can handle live HD OTA/QAM feeds. An official EyeTV or HDHomerun app would be amazing at making this an well rounded product.

To be honest though, if this next ATV has an A5 or better I'll be upgrading.

That stinks. I only have a few blu-rays...I was just getting into them when I started rippping all my DVDs (that I now play on my ATV). I haven't tried to ripped the blu-rays because I don't have a blu-ray player on a computer, and I am dumping all media disc.

I do have a couple of DVDs that I ripped that don't play correctly, but once I get all my DVDs ripped I will go back and try to get them to work. I should be done within the next couple of weeks.

I love the apple tv2, I have almost fully converted all my movies/tv shows with proper metadata and all.

Not sure what I would want in the apple tv3. If it got 1080p, i may be a little mad because I would have to re-rip my bluerays to 1080 instead of 720, but I guess I would suck it up.

I would definitely upgrade if it got apps, and faster processor/more ram,

but honestly I love the apple tv2, I may just hang onto that.

I had that same dilemma as you. In the end, I figured 1080p is where the puck will be going soon, and 720p is where the puck is right now. Might as well just go for 1080p and by the time I'm done ripping, I'll be all set :D

I'll buy it when it comes out and put the ATV2 in the bedroom. I have to think soon Apple will use the ATV to enter the console market. The next generation of PowerVR chips (series 6) should be sufficient to compete with the Xbox, and with NO NOISE.

Because of the limitation of ATV2 not being able to play MY Blu-Rays, I purchased a Dune media player. It's one of the better media players out there, but it's an extra device and no one really does user interfaces as well as Apple. I can get close to it on the Dune with something like MyMovies, but it's a lot of unnecessary work.

I wish I could simply connect my ATV to my RAID server and play the movie as if I've inserted the Blu-Ray in. I'm sure there are DRM reasons for this. So even if the ATV3 has 1080p, it means nothing to me.

I've seen enough Blu-Ray vs iTunes movies at 720p to know I can see a difference on my Panasonic plasma TV. So, I'll stick with the Dune until I can add my Blu-Ray ripped movies to iTunes.

Apps on ATV? Eh, that's really just a PS3 or Xbox really.

It doesn't even have to have 1080p for me it just has to be released. 6b moths ago I decided I wanted a second one in my house, but decided to wait for the 3 before getting it.

upgrade to ATV3? I'm waiting for the real Apple TV

Apple will have to upgrade to 1080p to keep up with the other set top boxes around (roku, etc.). To do this, the ATV will require a faster processor, maybe the A5X, but really it only needs the A5 to do 1080 and Siri. Apple probably won't put the A6 in there if it doesn't really need to. That way it would save some money.

It would be nice if they came out with a real television, though. That would make my day!
