2015 iPP 12.9 user here. I would only buy a new ipad if it did not have a camera bump. I will be out of luck, sure.

the iPad Pro is my favourite device so I will definitely upgrade it faster than other apple devices I own, including my iPhone.

currently have an iPad Pro 11” 2020 and would upgrade if
- significant Battery increase
- new display tech is big enough improvement (may consider the 12.9”)
- they move the video conferencing camera to the long side
- stronger chip matters for future use cases ( more pro apps)

The ability to dock the iPad to the Magic Keyboard; and magically the iPad morphs into MacOS, remove the Magic keyboard and it returns to iPadOS.

Wow, this is an amazing idea and would definitely upgrade for it! Other than that, I can't think of anything I *need* that my 2018 doesn't already do. Screen is fine, speed is fine, battery life is fine. Nothing is bad enough that I feel the need to drop $800+ on a new one. I would love if they had a camera-less version, but that'll never happen

macOS. Otherwise iPad is basically still a toy. Can’t see upgrading. Rumors don’t bode well. Looks like more of the same.

I have a 2018 11” Pro. I’ve starting using it with the magic keyboard and Jump Desktop to get to my work PC and my work Mac. Gives me the convenience of size, various OS options, some great native apps..... I’m actually tempted to grab one of the 2020 12.9 deals right now. I’m kicking myself for passing on the 12.9 keyboard deal they had last week.

just traded in my 10.5 pro for the air last week, I'll be within the return window. what will they announce that will justify the 200 dollar difference assuming no change in price? The a10x still worked fine for my uses, the battery was just getting bad and Apple offered 280 for trade in. so i took it up.

I don’t think it is a toy, exactly. It is a simplified computing device, with an operating system to match. The question is, how much complexity do you need to serve up in the OS in order to be a good platform for the apps that are driving user value? There are some things for which the iPad will never be a good platform, take coding or game development in Unity, basically things which need a lot of screen area.

Do you need iPadOS to support virtualisation? Given the limited multitasking capabilities I reckon not. Similarly it doesn’t seem to be a great platform for 3D content creation, and the capabilities for 2D photo and movie editing are improving but still fall short of the desktop. It is not just software maturity that does this, it is the use cases in which people have access to and are willing to use the device.

Most of the use of the iPad seems to be in the home, on the couch or in bed. What software do you use? Media consumption, the browser, email, maybe some light photo and video editing. When you get to the office, you have a desk, a chair and probably a Mac. So when you sit down to do serious work, you have a machine which has a big screen and is capable of running serious software.

Thats why the iPad Pro is a bit of an in-between device. It’s features are overkill for a home-based consumer, while in the studio it is likely to be used alongside a Mac as a second device. I just don’t think you are going to get people using an iPad Pro to do serious work while sitting on a couch, I think that that is a much less common use-case.

It would be best for Apple if they embraced that iPad Pro as a second screen device in the office, and started delivering value through synchronised capabilities between the Mac and the iPad Pro, for example the ability to take a Final Cut Pro or Logic project that is being worked on on the Mac and playing back a version on an iPad on the same WiFi network.

2018 12.9” 1TB w/magic keyboard is still happily my daily driver. I would need something incredibly compelling to definitely upgrade, probably in the OS. Like docking it to a monitor boots a full Mac OS sort of compelling.

The ability to have a true second monitor would make me think about it.

I second this. If the new 2021 models are capable of running FCP X and professional editing with the Magic Keyboard, I'd upgrade, even after just upgrading in 2020.
Considering that the initial mac minis they were handing out to devs had the exact same chip as the iPad Pro, it is already likely 'capable' of running Final Cut Pro.

For the 12.9 in particular, a significant weight and thickness reduction, such that it can be comfortably used one-handed.

For both sizes a materially better screen (OLED-like). Hopefully the Mini LED screen will be this.

Other than that the changes I want to see at this point are really more about the software than the hardware.

my 2020 11" ipad pro is still within return window from Costco. i'm tempting to return it this weekend and order a new 2021 12.9" IPP next week. but i've read only this year going to be mini-led, next year ipad pro will use OLED, so is this a stop gap year for 12.9" ipad pro?

That’s obvious, but what I was pointing to was the release of a more fully featured editing app that runs on iPad Pro.

No one here knows when or if Apple will use OLED panels in iPads. You're never going to catch up to whatever technology is coming to the next phone, or iPad, or Macbook, or... There's kind of an adage that if you NEED something now, buy it now, if you DON'T NEED something now you'll pretty much always get better value by waiting. Now of course we all have various levels of WANT.

Looks just like a processor upgrade only for ipp11. Don’t think iPads are meant to upgrade every year or two unless real specific need unless big changes.

A landscape orientation front facing camera is my main requirement! Taking meetings on my iPad Pro attached to my magic keyboard with the current camera location makes for a very very awkward angle.

Apart from this my launch day 2018 ipad pro 12.9 256gb is perfect and nothing would make me upgrade for the next 2 years atleast.

Wishing for a much improved iPadOS15 though.

bought an iPad Air 2 weeks ago, and love it.
im thinking of swapping it for an iPad Pro. because im using the device way more the I thought I would do.

Im in doubt if I should get the 12? is it useable at the couch? or more for the desk with the magic keyboard?

I have a 12.9” iPad Pro. The screen makes it great for browsing and media consumption, but it’s a bit heavier to hold, definitely needs two hands, and typing while holding it is a bit error-prone. Very useable on the couch.

My 2018 11” Pro has ghost touch. I’ve had enough of it and I’d like to upgrade to a new 2021 Pro if it’s a substantial upgrade. I looked at the Air 4 but it’s missing 120Hz which I really can’t give up!

What’s a ghost touch if I may ask? Something like an unintended input on the screen?
