I hear you but again things just aren't flying in what you're saying. Macbook and iPads and imacs get very big yet can manage to be elegant. Have you seen the new 27" iMac?

Also, they offer carrier subsidized price points for iPads and they come in sizes.

Yes, elegance may come in various sizes. Now imagine carrying Apple's 27" iMac simply because it's elegant. Elegant as some big things may be, they're better of on that huge desk than elsewhere. Same as carrying your elegant S3 and Tab 10.1" to lunch and back to the office. Too daunting. My iphone 5 and ipad mini are just fine for elegance.

How am I making others suffer? It's your choice to engage in this thread or not.

Offering choices is not pushing desires. Hardly. If anything, there's only one thing here that's "pushing onto others" and that's Apple.

Again, I quote:

Also:

"Given this precise philosophy, shouldn't Apple offer more screen sizes as options?"

I personally believe in Apple's strategy. Developing a product that delivers on essential requirements in it's segment without hassle. The iPod line serves its purpose well...so do their Mac computers and their phone and tablets.

Small things are cute (I think of the Palm Pre). I'm not really buying the whole elegance argument, a 4.6" iPhone with the same great Apple look would still be elegant...

ELEGANCE WASN'T MY ARGUMENT (sorry about the caps, I wasn't yelling; just want people to read that). Anyway, elegance was my opinion, I think phones are nice when small. Affordability however is my argument and it makes sense and it lines up with what Apple has done so far.

I can understand the one handed thing, but Apple go about it all wrong.

Samsung created a feature that allows you to use the keyboard one handed even though the screen is a whole 1.5" bigger on the Note 2.

Apple just whine and complain, rather than thinking outside the box.

So +1.

In fact, +100.

I guess I'm in the minority with not caring that you can't text one handed on some of the larger screened phones. I remember having a motorazor and dialing numbers with both hands. Then I went through several Blackberrys and always typed with two hands. Then I had 4" touch screen phones in which I used two handed. Now I have my Note. I do my fair share now of texting one handed because I tend to use swype quite a bit. It's kind of funny that I text one handed more with my Note than I did the smaller screened phones.

I've found myself in the last couple of months starting to use the voice function on my Note to send all my texts.

Not even going to to get into size - its simply a non issue

Here's my list

1: Access to my own files. I don't want to have to go via dropbox to get a mind-map (or anything else) I just created from my phone to a computer. Why can't I just hook it up to the USB port and browse my own files.

2: Improved input method / keyboard, even if there were no other reasons Swype is the killer app for me

3: Choice about what I can and can't intall - e.g. browsers

4: Improved notifications

5: The ability to install my own apps (i.e. written by me) without having to pay a developer licence or jailbreak my phone.

So its a short list, but I suspect it will be a while ...

Direct answer:

  • Lower price
  • Bigger screen (4,5"-5")
  • Truly usefull notifications app (just copy android please)
  • Intents: Use your preferred app to send an email, browse the web, search for restaurants...
  • Open services (being able to access iCloud elements EASILY from any computer/device as it's in Dropbox / Google...)
  • A kind of back to my mac, at least with iDevices and Macs (file browser)

In all of the major polls, the number 1 thing people have requested was a larger screen size. Longer isn't cutting it, and the popularity of the S3, and NoteII prove this. An LED notification light would be awesome! I never knew I needed, or wanted one of these until I got my SIII. Otherwise I ave always loved iOS. I didn't switch to Android so much because of the software(though I wanted to genuinely try something different), but more because the hardware simply isn't getting the facelift I wanted.

Also I think so many people try to justify Apples conservative choices because they're afraid to admit that someone else out there has done the smartphone better. I was the same way for years until the release of the SIII, and I realized Samsung just simply made a better smartphone. Apple can regain the crown if they decide to start being bold, and daring again. Conservation will lead them down the same path as Sony.

Despite having converted and now throwing my support behind Android, I am willing to return to the iPhone if the hardware and software was right. Anyone else? And if so, what would that entail?

I'm also going to throw a curveball. This is neither here nor there, but I'll mention it anyway...

Philosophy

I'd like to see Apple adopt a more humbling approach to their keynotes and presentations. A lot of it is condescending or disingenuous. We live in a fact-checking world, and making claims that they offer the world's thinnest phone or trying to insinuate that one handed use is foolish beyond anything 4" just won't cut it anymore. Millions of S3 owners can attest to somehow surviving with a much larger phone, as can others.

I'd return in a heartbeat if Apple can hit these points.
After having to return 2 iPhone 5's with problems, one for blown earpiece, second for no reception and running hot all the time, I switched to a S3. Put Jelly Bean on it. If Apple can deliver what the marketing dept promises then I would consider another iPhone. However anything that Apple does is going to be catchup. Now if they can give me a Iphone that would have a 3D projector so I can see that unicorn then hell yes...
Maybe longtime IOS users are aging out, so to speak. Apple knows that IOS is limited so their push is to expand to new users to play the magical theme over and over. It has worked for sometime, but like Puff the magic dragon, people grow up and move on.

Ironic considering Tim Cook's recent interview on NBC where he said Apple will never become Sony.

Time will tell.

I have faith in Apple, especially as a long time Mac user that dates back before the iPhone. But lately nothing from Apple has really WOWED me. I loved the overall look, and design of the iPad mini until I realized it had iPad 2 specs instead of top of the line specs. Plus I'd honestly love a Note competitor made by Apple. I'd snatch one up on day 1! Heck, toss in an A6 processor, and add a retina display to the iPad mini, and I'll buy one of those too! However these incremental upgrades from Apple have got to stop.
