And still here we are, discussing some app updates/wishes in a thread "

What would you like to see in the next macOS release?" :)

Apple’s default applications are part of the OS, they’re updated with the OS, and marked with the OS.

Unless you would like to restrict this conversation to be specifically changes we would like to see with the underlying OS such as memory management, Grand Central dispatch, graphics subsystem , USB controllers etc . which I have no opinions in.

nope, I don't want to restrict anything I was just pointing out the confusion (that Apple love because the news list is longer) between app an OS... just look at this monterey page from Apple and count what's OS and what's app.

Also would be great to see improvements for Apple TV App.

1. Vertical movie posters in "Library" Section.

Somehow all the movies here have horizontal posters. However, the same movie library on Apple TV 4K (device) has vertical posters. Moreover, horizontal posters look like they were made specifically for the app. They don't look like the ones released by the studios.

Also posters for some movies stay vertical but with blurred background in the horizontal frame.

Vertical poster:

2. Full screen playback (ability to remove black bars for 16:9 movies)

iTunes always had an ability to play movies in full screen mode as an option (remove black bars). It is still there in QuickTime player and on iOS (both system player and Apple TV app). Somehow it disappeared from macOS Apple TV app.

Man.. that demo seems so raw compared to Apple's current presentations. They are so slick, neither of which are complaints. I'd love to see Tim demo something and then say "boom".
I think that's because of the pre-taped video events. For example at WWDC 2019 were plenty of demo times:
But most of the time Craig is doing them. I can't remember having seen Tim doing a demo.

Yeah, it's because the latest ones are pre-recorded due to the obvious reasons.

I think they are actually making a point that their OS comes with all the apps you need. You can just turn on your Mac and make video calls to your friends, send emails, listen to music and watch movies.

"You take it out of the box and in 5-10 minutes you are video conferencing with friends, with the built-in iSight camera, with all the software. It's that fast. And it really works".

I would love to see stability and big fixes, lots of them!!!!
Things such as the columnar Finder view dividers staying sane (years old bug,) or the UDF file system on BluRay not crashing the kernel the hard way (reboot required,) or ...

All years old and not fixed!

How about allowing a mouse and trackpad to scroll in different directions? It's pretty frustrating when I plug in a mouse and the scroll is different to how I use my trackpad

you can set them independently in system preferences>trackpad (or>mouse)
The setting definitely appears in both places, but it either has a bug or is intended to set the same setting for both. When If I turn off natural scrolling (like an animal) for trackpad, it also turns it off for mouse. And vice versa. I suspect it's a bug, but not sure what other people are seeing.

ah. just tried it with my applemouse and my macbook. seems the mouse settings are overriding the trackpad (altho i can scroll in the same direction on both).

Every time I use Snow Leopard on my MBP 2009 I'm amazed how fast it feels. Apple should really work on optimization of the current macOS.

Some other features that I would like to see.
  • Additional formatting in Notes.app. Nothing crazy, but at the very least the ability to change the colour of text and highlight. If they could go further than I'd really want Notes to be more of a competitor to OneNote, with the ability to move/control images a bit more freely.
  • iCloud sync for Stickies.app.
  • Option to pin Widgets side-pane to desktop.

Changing the foreground colour of some text in Notes is possible via Format > Font > Show Colours. I use red, green and orange quite often.

That would be a great feature. Obviously the wheel should scroll in the un-natural direction.

For now, there is an app called Scroll Reverser that does just this, in case you did not know already.

Same. Presumably it is by design. Only that the checkbox appears in two places.

A Mac OS with a functional iCloud folder… So it will properly work instead of downloading more data than I have on iCloud. It does that on every computer I have. Actually it’s been forcing me to disable it (I have 800Gb of data on iCloud) and I upload everything manually with airdrop from a MP with a 5Tb hard drive storing the user folder ?‍♂️

1. Focus on stability instead of adding new, buggy beta features which make users of older Macs (myself included) unhappy and forced to downgrade.

2. Stop automatically downloading my iCloud Drive onto my Mac when I reinstall, there should be an extra page on Setup Assistant which asks whether you want to transfer iCloud files to your Mac.

3. Fix the stupid Bluetooth problems which they didn't fix in Catalina, Big Sur or Monterey so far. I've had so many devices randomly disconnect!

Well it would be nice if there was a return to some of the features and layout of earlier OSX. Itunes of yore was a lot nice and more fun. There are different way to incorporate more of the features that came later without sacrificing the look and feel for something that is bleh and/or annoying.

Develop better some of the areas of System preferences so they are easier for newbies yet not stupid for techies.

Build on the Sidecar idea and give us functionality to screen-share our Macs to our iPads remotely from locations away from the same network. Obviously this would need to run in tandem with a corresponding iPadOS feature. Third-party apps have existed for years to facilitate this, but all of them are a bit clunky compared to what (I imagine) it would be like if the feature was natively built into the OS(s).

Been a nightmare since at least High Sierra, which my old iMac was pegged at. BT was so utterly frustrating I eventually went back to 'wired-everything', and consequently had to buy a new mk2 Magic Trackpad and buy a third-party wired mouse considering the absolutely dumb design of the Magic Mouse mk2 prohibits its use as a wired device. I have literally zero intention of ever turning on BT on my new Studio Max.

I remember seeing a concept a while ago of an improved System Preferences. Yes, the icons have changed but if you go back to 10.0 and open System Preferences, the layout of ~75% of the panes and the home screen are the same on Monterey.

Edit: This was the concept: https://basicappleguy.com/basicappleblog/settingsapp

I personally think it looks too much like iOS, it's better suited to a newer iPadOS with more features relating to productivity and multitasking. Though I do agree with changing System Preferences to Settings.
