Fair. As I say, the market is too much of a niche, so I wouldn't be surprised if they dropped it completely.

I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest to see the Note 8 out next year and it'll sell in the millions and all you lot will buy one. The only people going on about the Note 7 jokes will be Apple fans.

How is your new Ferrari catching fire any different? It's a brand, you spent a lot of money in it, it blows up, its the exact same thought processes of its customers, I don't think how historic the brand is comes into your thinking when your 200 grand car goes up in flames, the same as the Vauxhall Zafira.
Apple had to recall its Nano first gen due to faulty batteries at risk of fire. People would still buy the Note 7 if it was left on sale, they still buy other products that have been recalled.

Also:

http://www.zdnet.com/article/nokia-recalls-batteries-at-risk-to-explode/

https://www.theguardian.com/business/2007/aug/15/mobilephones.technology

The above makes Samsungs recall look like nothing.

As I said, their have been plenty of product recalls over the years but and small and the public forgets and moves on and buys from the brand still...

It is PURE hyperbole to go on claiming anything else, history proves that fact!

Ok whatever you say. I guess we will see come early next year.

You obviously 'missed' my links to mobile phone recalls by Nokia that make Samsungs look like nothing what so ever then.... so YES it has happened before.

I said Note 8, no idea why you made that comment....
[doublepost=1476218453][/doublepost]Here's one of Apples recalls for faulty laptop battery's made by Sony, one of several manufactures that had to recall them, about 1.8 million laptops, so very nearly as many Note 7'S, was their reputation damaged? What about Dell etc? The public won't care Sony made the batteries just like Samsung doesn't make the one in the Note7.

Oh I did not miss anything. I just said we would see. Seriously we need to wait and see.

In terms of the Note 7 comment, I was referring to you saying Apple fans are the only ones making jokes about the Note 7. The only people defending the Note 7 are Samsung fans. You also said if the Note 7 was still on sale people would buy it. Again that would only be hardcore Samsung fans.

I am not making jokes about the Note 7, I just think this is much bigger then any other smartphone problems before. The Note 7 is a lot bigger then Nokia was. I am not saying this is the end of Samsung, but they do have a lot of work to do to get their rep back. You can't deny that.

It's not bigger, it's just a different world and it's had more coverage then you would have 5 years ago. I think joe public buying goods that have been recalled shows it would be non Samsung fans that would buy it too.

Personally I think if it's proven the battery's are at fault then it's an indication they are at their limits. It's been warned about for long enough. I'm still waiting for this apparent battery revolution I keep hearing about... along with my Note 5... perhaps customs think it's a Note 7 and have held it lol!!

Oh no I know the most people that bought the phone when it was released were people that thought it was a good phone. I am just saying now that this has come to light, I don't think many would still buy it.

See I think the phone is at fault as well. All the phone manufacturers are using the same old school battery technology, but they are not having issues. It was the crappy battery tech plus the limits of what a phone can handle in heat. The design was just to constrained to handle it.

Good luck getting your Note 5. I still think it's a really good phone today.

Well, as you are saying, it's different, at last in various ways, which can play a difference in one sense or another compared to other companies/products and other recalls. Certainly not to say that it does or should or will, but it definitely can.

Would be nice to know what is causing the faults, trouble is it's hardly a widespread issue in the replacement phones so it could make be hard to locate for them? Or take a while to investigate.
Yeah I still would be using my 6S if I hadn't got sucked into the features of the iPhone 7, which I really didn't like, the price didn't help in the UK, typing on an iPad Pro that cost 200 pounds less makes you think like that! I had the Note 5 before but back then it was too big as it had to be in my pocket all day at work, at a new place now where it can sit on my desk. Looking forward to having one again, I think it's better then the Edge Plus.

Different coverage, but it'll be something else in the news next week and so on.

I think Samsung will fully investigate this issue, they may need to prove to these safety bodies they have found and rectified the fault? And then move onto the Note 8 or whatever it gets called, perhaps move to a removable battery, although it may be thicker if they do that? Give it stereo speakers etc.

And then sell the S8 and S8 Edge will be its new flagship until the next Note.

So, the news is in, and Samsung have officially discontinued the Note 7. And Samsung clearly need something to get back on their feet, as well as to satisfy their customers. So what do you think they will do?

My guess is something along the lines of integrating the Note line into the S line, maybe making three or four models of the S8, with a mixture of flat and edge models, ranging in size from 5 to 6 inches. Not too sure what they will do about the S Pen though.

It is tough to say what Samsung should or will do. Clearly, restoring some confidence in their phones will be paramount...they need to make absolutely sure that with the S8/Edge to have rock-solid dependability in regards to the battery.

I don't think Samsung needs to wow us with new advances...I may be in the minority to say that, but...

I think you are too optimistic in that dept...the fallout in China, the US and elsewhere from the N7 will take some *serious* rebuilding.

I would love to see a quick bounce-back from Samsung next year...I have no vested interest to see them win or fail. A strong Samsung is good for the overall consumer though.

I love my iPhone 7, and I loved my 6S. I don't think the 7 is a huge improvement over the 6S, but the jet black got me. I think it's the best looking phone out JMO. That is about 90% of the reason I got the 7.

I think Samsung will do all they can to figure this out. I really believe they will have to have a complete redesign to get people confident again in the company.

The s8 is what will be next. And they better not mess that one up!

I keep seeing talk of them pushing up its release too. IMO, that would be a mistake of epic proportions---really hope they 'swallow their medicine' so to speak regarding this issue, take their time with the S8 release and make sure it is everything it should be---and then check everything again. It may not be fair but Samsung will be held to a higher standard for the next release (or two) and they can't screw it up.

They need to just come to grips that they're going to take a financial hit becuase of this debacle and not rush things along with the mentality that it's what they need to do to stem the bleeding (hence, my 'swallow their medicine' cliche). In fact, even if they were confident they could get the S8 out sooner, I think too close on the heels of this issue does that phone no justice and starts it off at a bigger disadvantage. Let a little time pass.

Yep if they rush to get the S8 out sooner now, at that point we will have to accept Samsung simply do not learn from past poor choices. We try to convince ourselves they do, but if they rush out the S8, they simply don't.

I remain dubiously hopeful ...

Wouldn't surprise me. Being a chaebol that contributes around 20℅ to the South Korean economy (granted not just the mobile division) only adds to the conundrum. They've got some internal restructuring to do with a leader in poor health and an heir who might not be the best choice to run the firm.

Interesting to see how this plays out but I'm not sure on the S8 Pro thing as timing will be weird.

I don't see them going to a one-flagship-a-year approach as S8 sales will subside too much against iPhone 8 and, if Google go all out, the Pixel 2. And having an S8 in March or whatever followed by an S8 Pro in August doesn't really work for the latter release.

So either they just carry on with Note 8 (hmmmmmm) or rebrand to something other than Note or S8 is what I'm thinking.

I just really hope that next year the Note 8 or whatever they call it will come out later in the fall when the new software and cpu's are ready, instead of trying to beat Apple to release. But next year will be tough if the rumors of the redesigned iPhone are true, they really missed a golden opportunity this year.

I think there will be some sales hit initially on S8. But as long as S8 doesn't explode and maintain their strength (best screen, best camera, waterproof, wireless charging, etc), it will be business as usual for samsung.

I guess the S8 Edge could be essentially Note 7 casing but with newer chip, no S-Pen and battery issues fixed. Samsung has wanted to make more curved display phones so reusing the leftover displays from the Note 7s would seem like a smart move for the next phone.

For the next Note (or whatever it will be called) they could have that folding display design as a great differentiator so it's not only a big phone with a pen but also one that folds out into an even bigger one.

Whats next? FOLDABLE SCREENS. Samsung needs to get their stuff together and beat everyone to the market, although look what that got them this time.

In the USA social media and the press thrive off of sensationalism. They act without facts, without common sense, just knee jerk spewing of wild stories to attract attention. Then the haters pile on spreading more false stories, promoting their agendas and seeking more attention.

Samsung made some mistakes. But they were outnumbered by unsubstantiated "claims" and not given ample time for discovery and to develop the best course to a complete resolution. Then under pressure they stumbled uncertain exactly how to proceed.

All in all they'll recover faster than most people expect.
