Enjoying a weekend back in my hometown and spending time at my parents' house. I grew up near the water and what's on my mind is how much I appreciate having it within view again.

There is indeed something very special about living near the water and being able to look out at it each and every day and evening.... I love where I am and have loved this place since the first day I laid eyes on this small lake (actually a storm retention pond but we call it a "lake"). My computer workstation is at right angles against a wall adjacent to the sliding glass door which leads out to my deck and frequently when I'm at the computer I pause and gaze out at the water.

It looks nice! I think my mom is spending a week in your area, at least in Long Beach, for a conference relatively soon.

Yep--Naples. It was a great place to grow up, and I really appreciate coming back here (even if I'm not all that far away--I haven't spent any extended time at home since Christmas).
Got it. Even summertime and Memorial Day it’s still a good time to enjoy long beach.

Been visiting there since 2021 when my aunt bought a house there.

Sadly I've never been stationed on a coast, been a land-lubber all my life.
I did spend a week's vacation with what's-her-name in Ft Walton Beach, 8th floor overlooking the beach. It was cool, but I prefer looking out at mountains rather than a flat blue gulf. But the last two evenings we had violent storms blow in, constant thunder and lightning, and I loved it! Really cool experience (helps that it wasn't my property in the storms' paths).

Not a fan of milk chocolate, - not at all - I'm afraid.

In fact, about the only chocolate I am partial to is dark chocolate, and even then, it is a rare treat, usually reserved for deepest, darkest, dreariest winter days.
I used to love Dark Bounty bars but they've stopped making them. They just make the milk chocolate ones now.

Bounty? Far too sweet. Not a fan of coconut since I drank most of a bottle of Malibu when I was 13-14. Never felt so ill.
Now I enjoy a twice or a small mars bar a couple of times a year. The odd hot chocolate in winter. That’s about it as far as chocolate goes for me.

Funny that you should mention Mars Bars; I recall that my mother was rather partial to Mars Bars.

Had a lovely time at the party on Friday. A few shots of Jack Daniels and a cigar which was lovely since I haven't had one since my best friends wedding last year. Happy to say that I stayed clear of all drugs, though concerningly, when someone brought out the 4mg PMS hydromorphone, I felt weak and almost caved there and then. I ultimately decided it wasn't worth ruining my sobriety, but I'm not sure I could replicate that decision next time, and so I'll take a break from that group of friends for the time being.

Luckily my province has revoked it's decision on "safe supply" dilaudid, meaning it just became 10 times harder and more expensive to acquire, further reinforcing my decision not to indulge.

Hope all is well with you guys, and that the beginning of your week is going well.

Bounty Bars are similar to what we have here in the US, Mounds Bars -- unsurprising, since they are both made by the Mars Company. Mounds only come in dark chocolate, which is why I love them. Those, Reeses Peanut Butter Cups and York Peppermint Patties are my favorites when it comes to chocolate candies. Like Scepticalscribe, I prefer dark chocolate to milk chocolate, but will eat either.

I have been playing the piano for 15 years and sharp key signatures STILL throw me for a loop. Doing my daily chorale (hymn) reading practice to keep up my four-voice reading, and I encountered one in E major. All the D sharps and some E sharps I am not used to. Had it been written in E flat major, I would have no problem.

No matter how good you are, no matter how knowledgeable, no matter how much you have mastered your subject, there is always something new to learn.

I realised that I was running low on bread (well, I have been out of bread for a few days), butter, cheese, and sundry other necessities.

Bread shall be purchased tomorrow, whereas organic milk, organic double cream, butter, and cheese were all purchased this afternoon, in advance of the week-end rush.

What is the best airline to take now? I was basically a Southwest lifer for the longest time, but their changes this week have been a real turnoff. I'm not planning to go to Vegas this year, but I looked at the costs to go to Vegas for San Francisco and San Jose and it's a lot more (especially with the bag fee increase). I know others take airlines have gotten used to the additional costs, but Southwest took their brand, stabbed it with a knife, and told us this was what customers wanted. It's really off putting.

The downfall of Southwest started happening several years ago (though I recognize it’s gotten worse recently). Last I flew it was in 2019 and it was absolutely awful. Delays left and right and service was bad. United is terrible too.

My folks and I are loyal American customers. My parents have the American credit card and they’ve gotten good discounts on flights and free checked bags. Alaska Airlines is good, too. I’ve flown Albuquerque to Portland on Alaska, and Milwaukee to Seattle. Both flights were great. Though AA is best in my experience.

EDIT: I've never flown Delta, so I can't speak for that. I'd like to sometime to see if it's any good.

From the discussion, I assume that you mean - or, are referring to - a US carrier.

For myself, as I am European, - and have no reason to fly using American carriers - if I have a choice, or a say, in the matter, I will generally choose to fly with Turkish Airlines.

Yes, I have read horror stories about Southwest; weren't they - if I am not mistaken - the airline that pioneered the idea of no frills flights?

Greyhound.
All kidding aside, I quit using airlines altogether seven or eight years ago; I even drove across half the US (lengthwise) to my Mom's funeral, that's how much I hate the US airlines anymore.
When I started my career after college in '83, things were quite different. I could just walk up to the gate attendant and she was already checking the next flight's seating arrangement, as I was 6'5", so she could change my seat to an Exit row, gratis. Having to delay a flight back, or move it up, was no problem whatsoever.
Heh, how things have changed.
I realize driving everywhere is not an option for most people, but since retiring it's the only distance travel I'll do. Ph*** the money-grubbers.
