Just learned (yesterday) that the best boss I ever had, a wise, witty, and wonderful man, - who was an incredible mentor to me, generous, encouraging, supportive, - I learned so much from him - has died.

He was elderly, but that doesn't matter; I thought the world of him, and both liked and respected him greatly.

Sorry to hear that. I have a lot on my mind atm, not ready to share.

I will say we have a heat wave now and even though I prefer the disadvantages of this weather to those of winter it still takes my energy. AC is rare enough here in Europe, though on the other hand the AC last time I passed through the US in 2023 was freezing. Why?

I do miss window screens we had in Canada and also the US. Here it's what "bugs" you more, suffocating in your apartment or having flying critters that can bite or spread their filth get in.

Because that’s the point :) most folks like it ice cold out the vents. Its the only option in high humidity places & its purpose in large buildings, shops etc. that you want to remain cool is legitimate & needed, but at home I personally don’t care for it. I am lucky enough to live in a dry place (relative humidity is around 12-15%) so enjoy evaporative cooling (swamp coolers). It works really well for temps up to the low-100s and does not produce that “freezing” feeling. It’s a much more temperate experience and they’re much easier on the electric bill as well as they’re easy to fix/maintain/repair vs AC. AC is so expensive. Thats another reason I don’t care for it. There are so many better ways to spend one’s hard earned money.

Speaking of bug screens my beagle pup, she tore a couple of my Window screens trying to get inside so will need to replace that screen material.

Good luck with it.

Agreed.

I prefer discomfort arising from heat to that that arises from the cold.

I am equally mystified by this.

In recent years, I discovered fly swatters, (and have found them excellent) and yes, I have seen some shops with those screens you describe (but only in summer).

Mind you, I agree with you on the subject of freezing A/C. Personally, I have never understood why A/C has to be freezing; cool, yes, freezing and frigid, no.

Actually, in some of the countries where I worked, in rooms with freezing A/C, male (and some female) colleagues would wear short sleeves while attending meetings, seemingly impervious to the icy cold, whereas I was almost invariably attired in a smart woollen jacket, while, whatever locals attended also wore long sleeves, in the form of suits or uniforms, though this may have reflected local custom as much as a response to the frigid temperatures.

When someone close to me crosses the finish line, I reflect on how I can honor their life through my own.

I hear you.

He was a wonderful man, terrific company, and possibly the best raconteur I have ever come across - he had a dry, droll, understated way of telling a story that was improbable (but all too often, was actually true) that was absolutely hilarious.

Moreover, he was incredibly widely travelled; he was generous, kind, encouraging and supportive to me as well as the source of invariably excellent advice (tendered thoughtfully over a coffee) that I learned to heed, a hands-off boss who gave you your head, yet who missed nothing; as a mentor, he was without equal.

Above all, he was wise.

I am one of the few people in my condo apartment complex who actually opens my windows in nice spring and fall weather! Everyone else keeps their HVAC system going all the time, either with the heat or the A/C set. I like and prefer fresh air and whenever it's possible, enjoy having my windows and sliding glass door open.

Even when I do have the A/C on, the thermostat is set so that the A/C doesn't kick in until probably it is warmer in here than most people would choose. I really dislike it when I go to a store, restaurant or even someone else's home and the A/C is blasting away, freezing cold. I always take a sweater with me when going somewhere in the summer.

I hate walking indoors from the heat into what feels like a deep-freeze environment. Then when I later step out of that same overly chilled place, the natural climate conditions (heat and humidity) of a typical DC-area summer day hit me full-blast like stepping into a furnace. Actually, for a minute or two, though, that warmth does feel good after the extreme chilliness of the store or restaurant. Still, going from one to the other extreme within a short time period probably isn't great for the human body!

We're all different. I personally hate the heat. Makes me feel irritable and uncomfortable. I sit in the office with a fan on me while a colleague wears a fleece all summer long. We had a team meeting today on Teams and he was sat at home still in his fleece and it's been 27ºC here today.

I think similarly - that going in and out of those temperature extremes is not very healthy for the body. I too owned a condo before this place and these kids (another lifetime ago lol) with AC and that is where I noticed how AC stressed my body and made ingress/egress physically jarring. Before and after this condo I always had evaporative cooling which is so much more for lack of a better term “natural or temperate” and easy on the body. Sweating is good and does many beneficial clarifying (and cooling) things for the body and if we are refrigerating ourselves LOL to prevent that in my eyes is not healthy.

On a side note, in the spring on that first day of nice t shirt weather, I loved opening up the windows to get that first cross breeze of fresh outside air and flush out that winters stale air. That plus a good dusting was so nice. Nothing like fresh outside air.

Also the last AC repair bill I got before moving into my current home was $800 bucks. Woof! Who wants to pay that? Lol. And new ones are $10000k +

No-thank-you.

Back to my hotel room after dinner. AC certainly makes the bar and the hitel room much more pleasant than the hotel corridors. It’s so unbearably hot here in the UK.
We get a lot more 30+ days per year than we used to. Hardly surprising given how we treat the planet.

They certainly have their place and uses. If your humidity is above 40%, Evaporative cooling doesnt work very well which IMO is most of the planet LOL, so for most folks, if you want to be cool, it's either AC or jump in the river.

Thank you! I mean I feel the same, it can't be healthy having the AC dialed up (or is it down?? ;) ) to such a degree.

If I can find a way to add some kind of screen to my windows I will do the same and leave them open when possible. Although pollen is also an issue in the spring.

I'm another who keeps my windows open when and where possible.

If you have double hung windows , there are (at least in the US) adjustable screens that fit into the opening of a partially opened window . https://www.walmart.com/ip/Wood-Fra...4386_0&wl14=adjustable window screens&veh=sem

When I was a kid , they were pretty common and worked well .

I am so lucky; my wife’s house has built-in screens in the casement windows. Place was built in the 50s by a basketball coach in town. The main room has a window wall with inch thick home built thermopane windows. Same in the dining room and kitchen. But because of the casement windows, no AC.

The design of most UK windows doesn’t lend themselves to screens. The handles of the windows rule out most options.
Already 26 degrees in the bedroom at 6:44. The sun doesn’t even come up on this side of the house. Very unpleasant. Fans don’t do that much to help. A nice cool shower will though!
