Visited the farmers' market earlier today

I may have said this before, but I'm envious of those who have access to a good farmer's market. There is only one conveneinet for me--but the prices are insane, and the selection of fruits/vegetables is limited. It may be fine for the person who can afford $$$$ and who wants specialty products ($$$$ honey, flavored vinegars, etc). But's terrible for people like me, who have a lmited budget and want just basic fruits and vegetables.

You do a lot to maintain your health. I applaud you. I can barely handle a 5k walk with the pain, but I power through it for the sake of my health. "No pain, no gain" as they say. You're right, I will bend with my knees. I have an idea of putting a huge Secret Lab chair box on two chairs, and while my girlfriend picks up the clutter from the floor I'll pack them into the box so I don't have to bend at all. Pretty excited to finish the project today.
I try my best. My Mum is obese. My Dad is not far from. I have been for large parts of my life. You can’t argue with genetics. But you can fight it tooth and nail.

I had an old audio amplifier which has been out of use for some time. At the very least, I knew it needed a new fuse, which I finally found at a local hardware store. I got the fuse yesterday and fitted it a few minutes ago. Turned the amp on. And I saw that annoying flash of light inside as this brand new fuse immediately blew.

So much for that amplifier...

It's a bit sad, beause it was a good amplifier, maybe the best I've used in my audio system. There is a bit of nostalgia, in that it was related to an amplifier used in the first good audio system I ever heard. But I guess this also gets closure--I can feel free to dump the amplifier. One less bit of clutter on the "someday I might do something with this!" pile.
Depending on the brand, model, and year, it might be worth fixing. If you simply don't want to deal with it, then maybe donate it to a thrift store with the note that it's not working. Sometimes they have people on staff who can repair older electronics, i.e. from the days when individual components were replaceable. One near me is also affiliated with a community training program that teaches basic electronics and repair.

A couple names probably worth repairing are McIntosh and Yamaha. Denon also comes to mind. I'd probably recognize more if given a list, but I can't recall directly.

Well, I said I didn’t really care about the heat in The Netherlands because I go for a holiday:
Turns out, I arrived last Sunday in Échassières (France). Lovely place (I’m going to that place since my dad died, 20 years ago) but since I arrived, temperatures are non-stop around 40C and I don’t have AC and no swimming pool here, crazy.
Nights are still ok, so sometimes I have to leave bed at 5:45AM for a run. Not a big deal.
I leave on Friday morning (I think on Wednesday, temperatures will go down) and will travel to La Nucía (Spain) the following Monday for 2 weeks (I love that place too, I’ve been there since I was a little kid, 30 years ago). The temperatures there are still around 31C and will stay around 31, but the nights are around 25C, I’m lucky there is a swimming pool and I have AC there.

It was made by NAD. I have honestly struggled a bit, because I like the idea of fixing things. But from what I can tell, the cost of repair would probably be more than the used value (particularly since it's not in perfect cosmetic condition).

And, unfortunately, I don't think thirft stores in my area have the resources to do repairs. For that matter, it seems like their "testing" of stuff they put out is usually nothing more than plugging it in, turning it on, and calling it good if the "on" light comes on. Even if there are flames shooting out the vent holes.

I am considering checking with an audio dealer who sells used equipment to see if he's interested. He does have a tech available.

My dad is on my mind, as is the weather (which - yes, it is perhaps uncomfortably warm, but I like heat and warmth, and a bright quality of light, and revel in blue skies and sunshine).

My father, who was a handsome, dark-complexioned, man, (he had black hair and dark brown eyes), a man with what is usually referred to as an "olive" tint to his flesh, took to the heat well, indeed, he tanned to a deep mahogany colour on his foreign holidays, and he loved heat, light and warmth.

Today is, or would have been, his birthday, and family lore did relate that he was born on a sweltering, stifling, sultry, punishing July day (my poor grandmother) many years ago.

I'll raise a glass of Something Nice to him and his memory later this evening.

Not a fan of the heat. It’s just too much for me. Whatever we do with windows, blinds and curtains the house climbs to around 30 degrees and doesn’t get much lower throughout the night.

Tomorrow I have to head into the office which will be equally warm. But there I don’t have the luxury of going topless as I can at home.

Fed up with global warming already. Only going to get worse.

We have a summer event here - a street music festival. The next "session", if you will, will be by the river at 8pm.

It is warm here (34°), but in the shade it's very pleasant. Indoors, it's similar to London (currently 30°C in my living area) but we don't have as much humidity here (35% now) which makes a big difference.

Well we had a conference last week called "AI for Good" which I will not comment on the title or the political aspects of this I did see an interesting demo of robots at the main Geneva railway station.

Speaking of AI, I really don't like AI in places where I didn't ask for it and don't want it.

The thing is, I actually think language translation is one of the most useful applications of AI. Everyone knows how bad and error-prone traditional translation apps are, and it's unrealistic to expect all of us to be polyglots and just learn every language. AI has improved translation significantly, and I've used it in work I've done.

Now for the "but". I have a friend from Brazil whose content I watch on Instagram regularly. He posts travel videos and "day in the life" vlogs. It's all in Portuguese, and it doesn't bother me that I can't understand it. I like hearing him speak and viewing the authentic, original content. But recently, I went to watch one of his videos, and it was auto-dubbed by AI into English with a creepy "uncanny valley" AI voice that sounded vaguely like him. I hated it, and immediately stopped watching the video. I could not find any way to turn this auto-dubbing off either. Not all of his videos have it, so I'm not sure if it's being done on his end or mine. In either case, it's awful, and at the very least, it should be easy to toggle it on or off if we just want to see the original.

AI has its uses. I am guilty of using it here or there for a few different, specific tasks but largely I strongly dislike seeing AI talked about, seeing it everywhere. Pre-2022 or so was really the Pre-AI era as far as I understand it. I miss the days where AI slop wasn't everywhere on Social Media, but really the timeframe I long for is anywhere from 2005-2019. Those were the "golden years", at least for me, anyway.

You are so wrong. The golden years all started with a 19.

Pretty much the world I'd really like to live in. My ideal world would be just like that, with a core group of a friends, no real need to "perform" or "show off" for other people, etc.
Here’s a tip from someone much older than you.

You don’t have to perform or show off. Just do want you want. If the world doesn’t like it, tough.

Never went in for social media. Never joined FB, Twitter or instagram. I think I’m happier for it.

Wasn't speaking of me in that respect - was speaking of the culture around Social Media of people showing off for attention, performing, acting, for clickbait and views. With AI in the mix, it has gotten a lot worse to the point where I can only tolerate browsing Social Media for very brief periods.

For me? I do my best to be good to other people, and mind my business for the most part, if that isn't good enough for other people - I move on without much of a care in the world. I am going to live my life, hold my opinions, and do what I see fit for my situations without regard for other people's judgement. That also reminds me that a lot of people have loyalty to teams, brands, etc, I don't count myself in that category.

I do have various social media accounts, only for occasional browsing here and there. I could never see myself posting videos of myself online. I would never do Youtube videos either.

So that’s where I have the advantage I think. Because I never joined I have almost no knowledge of the culture around Social Media. I don’t spend ANY time. Even your language tells me you tolerate it for short periods. Hardly sounds like you enjoy it.

just cut the cord and enjoy life so much more.

Well that’s my 2 pence worth anyhow.

I spend a lot less time on the internet than I used to, I speak to a lot less people, I am in a select few number of friend groups instead of being involved with a ton of "responsibilities" online. The way it was in years past was constant noise, drama, activity, but now? It is getting closer to how I want things to be. Recent events within the past few months lead me to reconsider how I want to engage with people going forward.

I miss the 70's better music and less hate and the muscle cars that you could actually work on in your driveway or garage not to mention appliances that did not require a mother board. I almost forgot owning a home was a lotttttt easier.

Yeah, I don't like how everything has become so electronic / digital oriented. I want appliances like they used to make them but finding them in good shape is becoming harder.

Speaking of easy to work on, and cars ...

I have this - a Commodore Pet 2001 (date stamped 1978). Yes, it hinges up just like a car bonnet! Unfortunately, it no longer boots up as I think the EPROMS have just faded away.

I have seen a few of those. One skater from Mexico made a post explaining different jumps in what I thought was his own voice in English with a Mexican accent. But then I saw something was off and saw his lips were not in sync and the small text stating it was auto-dubbed with AI. Not a fan, I watch foreign films with subtitles and prefer the same with my media in general. I think there is a lot of hype about AI, I am worried about the environmental cost and cognitive decline.
