The heat is on my mind. Got most of my exercise done before 7:30. The tepid shower was delightful. Now I’m just going to slowly roast in my home office. It’s already 27 and the sun doesn’t get around this side of my house until this afternoon. Dreading that already.

Fitness is on my mind... again. I looked at myself in the mirror, and although I lost a lot of weight, I still feel gross. I need to get off my lazy ass and get a pool pass and do some water-walking exercises with weights around my ankles and some spinal decompression therapy, in addition to aerobics. If not to lose any weight, to strengthen my back so I can do tougher things down the road. I hate my body (always have) so I have to get motivated before I get any older.

The older you get the harder it gets. I wish I’d put the effort in at a younger age. Now I’m just in damage limitation mode!

Back from a walk at lunch. It was far too warm but what can you do? Anything I can do helps.

Yes, exactly. Good for you for braving the heat and making changes. I tried walking in the 90+ degree weather a little while ago and almost passed out. I'm just in the right shape for it yet. I'll keep trying, but only when the temperature drops a little bit. This heat dome thing can't break soon enough!

I don't know what differences exist between "university" in other countries and "college" here.
Historically, in the UK, a university could have several - sometimes, dozens of - (affiliated) colleges.

Thus, traditionally, a college was a part of the university, but the converse was not true. This also meant that while the students attended individual colleges, the university awarded their degrees.

When I got divorced in 1995 at age 33 .. life was tough for me . Overweight, stressed, sad. My cousin introduced me to cycling, just riding. I had a bike as a kid and upon college stopped.

Been cycling ever since, it’s good exercise, you can push hard or go easy.
Gets you outside, meet people, become involved with groups / advocacy stuff if that’s your thing.
Lose some weight, gain some muscle.
Low impact.

Yeah, I went for a ride today. I need goals, and usually it's to cycle to a hypermarket or other shop.

Today it was to a new Asian supermarket. It was ok. Not the best stocked, especially fresh veg, but as it's in another country (I love saying that - it's just 10km away!), it's cheaper.

A return trip of 20km in this heat (32°C in the shade; bike computer saying around 40 as I was cycling back) and I've definitely lost loads of weight! However, it's all water, and it's long since been replaced 😁

This reminds me of reading old British mystery novels, where there would be clear references that would have shown this. Such-and-so a character is at such-and-so a school at Oxford.

I can't remember for certain, but this would probably have been in Dorothy Sayer's Gaudy Night, which took place at a women's college in Oxford. I'm sure this also had details about women's education in the era when it was published (1930s).

For those whol don't know, in the US college vs. university hinges on how advanced the study and degrees are. A "college" would cap off at at a bachelor's. degree. A university would have programs for at least master's. degrees, and they may have limited master's programs.

The college my father taught at was a university, but they had very few master's programs. I'd guess maybe only 2 or 3, and all were professional (e.g., educaton).chelor'sster's

We also have community colleges, which are two year. They grant associate degrees. They are cheaper, so students might go there to fulfill general bachelor degree requirements before going to an intitution where they can complete a bachelor's.

And there are universities with one constituent college (for example, Trinity College in Dublin - which is how that particular educational establishment is universally known and described - Trinity College is the sole constituent college of the University of Dublin).

Yes, I have read Gaudy Night, (by Dorothy L Sayers, who herself had studied at Oxford, achieving the highest grade of first class honours in her final exams) and loved it.

Just want to add that in the US, colleges can be administrative divisions within a university. For example:
(see the first question and answer)

And to add even more complexity, schools usually focus on professional training, sometimes at the graduate level only.

And to add to the College or University question...in the US it's quite common to refer to either as "college" in casual conversation

And on sweatshirts.

I had an old audio amplifier which has been out of use for some time. At the very least, I knew it needed a new fuse, which I finally found at a local hardware store. I got the fuse yesterday and fitted it a few minutes ago. Turned the amp on. And I saw that annoying flash of light inside as this brand new fuse immediately blew.

So much for that amplifier...

It's a bit sad, beause it was a good amplifier, maybe the best I've used in my audio system. There is a bit of nostalgia, in that it was related to an amplifier used in the first good audio system I ever heard. But I guess this also gets closure--I can feel free to dump the amplifier. One less bit of clutter on the "someday I might do something with this!" pile.

Check in case a bit of solder has come loose and is shorting some connections. If you have a hand-held vacuum cleaner, or a nice feather duster type thing, give the circuit boards a gentle wipe.

It's unlikely to be this, but if it is, you've fixed it in 30 seconds 😁

31ºC here this afternoon. I shan't tell you how I'm dressed!

There's no need to look at historical novels. This is still how Oxford and Cambridge work.

While someone might informally say that they went to Oxford or Cambridge, they'd put something like "Balliol College, Oxford" on a CV (...and asking "which college?" is a good way to catch out fibbers) or just "Balliol" in academic company. University of London is not somewhere you'd "go" (at least for a first degree) but it provides examinations and degrees for a bunch of London colleges like Kings and UCL). Plenty of other UK universities are divided into "colleges" (Durham, Lancaster) although they may be less independent or sometimes really more like halls of residence.

In the UK that would be very context sensitive! "College" often refers to colleges mainly teaching 16-18 year olds studying for either "A level" exams (originally for university entry, but now more general) or other more vocational qualifications. Until about the 90s there were also "technical colleges" which offered degrees and other colleges for specific professions (teaching, art etc.) - but they have mostly been upgraded to universities now. If people are talking about studying for a degree they'll probably say "university". A phrase like "college educated" would be somewhat ambiguous. (Apologies if that's a GenX/almost-boomer perspective).

Visited the farmers' market earlier today and purchased organic cherry tomatoes, plus organic cucumber, chives and several heads of new season's garlic.

Several types of olives were also purchased, as were semi-sundried tomatoes, buffalo feta cheese, some Roquefort, and mature Gouda.

Nectarines and yellow plums also found their way into my bag.

Mrs AFB is home from work. Highlight of my day.

Did the housework whilst she was gone. Too hot outside to do much gardening (although I did prune some roses and do a bit of weeding before she left).

Looking forward and not looking forward to the big game this evening. It will probably be a nervous watch.

Been thinking about cleaning off my porch today. It's 95, but we have fans installed in the ceiling (thank you, landlords) so it shouldn't be too bad. A lot of clutter that needs to go, but at least we have big boxes to stuff most of it in before we take it to the dump. Now the real question is: Can my back handle it?

Bend with your knees.

Here I just did a 5k before dinner. I did a 10k before breakfast. Also some weights before lunch.

On my mind is as I age whatever I do I put on weight. Just creeps up.

Oh to be young again!

You do a lot to maintain your health. I applaud you. I can barely handle a 5k walk with the pain, but I power through it for the sake of my health. "No pain, no gain" as they say. You're right, I will bend with my knees. I have an idea of putting a huge Secret Lab chair box on two chairs, and while my girlfriend picks up the clutter from the floor I'll pack them into the box so I don't have to bend at all. Pretty excited to finish the project today.
